Following a conversation on this site I have decided to give our story a voice and to try and change the future for other women.
I have started a petition to government to make our NHS hospital wards and waiting rooms across the UK infertile friendly.
There are 3.5 million people affected by infertility in the UK. Yet their experience of our hospitals only add to their grief and pain. Women who have suffered miscarriage, hysterectomies, gynaecology scans and operations are placed in maternity waiting rooms and wards surrounded by the sight and sound of pregnant women and babies.
So this campaign to government is to ask for:
• Separate rooms where women can wait for appointments away from pregnant women, babies and pregnancy poster campaigns
• Separate wards for women miscarrying their babies away from pregnant women, babies and maternity wards
• Separate rooms or wards for young women having had hysterectomies away from early pregnancy departments or maternity wards
• New legislation that means all NHS departments and GP surgeries provide safe environments for the infertile
Copy and paste this link into your browser to view and then sign the petition:
It takes just 5 people to sign the competition to go live. 10,000 for the government to respond and 100,000 for a debate about it in parliament. Considering there are 3.5 million suffering from infertility in the UK this is possible. But only with your help and the help of your friends and family. Let's do it xxx
Hi Fuzzy it says it's being checked so first hurdle done 😊 I'll sign it once it goes live. Are you a member of Gateway Women, def worth posting on there. Also Facebook page world childless week.
I totally agree with what you're doing. Being amongst women about to give birth whilst having infertility investigations, d and c to miscarry after several ivf attempts, and scans after bleeding is utterly excruciating.
Good luck.
Thanks everyone, the petition has had alot of attention and is currently being verified before going live on the government web site. Once this happens I will let you all know. It would be really helpful for it to be posted on different forums by everyone to get it as much attention as possible. So will appreciate as much help as possible. Xxx
Hi again, I am so pleased to say this petition has been recognised by the government and has gone live. Click this link to see the petition and start sharing it. We have just 6 months to get as many signatures as possible. Thank you x
So important for this to be recognised. Like so many I had a very distressing experience in hospital when I had a missed miscarriage after years of ivf treatment including being told that my husband couldn’t stay with me as it was a women’s ward. It was a deeply harrowing time and if somebody had just taken the time to read my notes and adapted their approach then maybe it wouldn’t have added pain and upset to what was already a devastating time for us.
Hi Emily, didn't realize it was you it's Laura Chorlton who you met at Costa Coffee, well done on the petition, I signed it too. I seem not to have your mobile number as I have got a new phone mustn't have transferred.Hope your ok? Laura x
The petition is doing really well and lots of people I know have been sharing it. So well done you. Unfortunately I had a very negative comment on my Facebook post from someone I thought was a friend so as I’m feeling quite vulnerable at the moment have deactivated my account. 🙁. I’m hoping I’ll be feeling stronger soon and will start promoting it again. Why do some people have to be so harsh!!!
I am so sorry that you have encountered negativity on your Facebook account after posting this. I can fight for other people so much easier than standing up for myself. Give me their address and I will go and get them for you.
Infertility has taught me a huge lesson in not judging someone till you have walked in their shoes. Luckily for many people they will not have experienced the agony of Infertility and can not appreciate the levels of pain and devastation this causes. Don't let their ignorance make your story or pain invalid. It's valid and you are a strong person for walking a painful and less travelled path.
I am so sorry you have encountered an ignoramus. It hurts even more when it is a friend. Some people will never understand. But I am so grateful that in this forum we all do.
Going public with a campaign like this does involve vulnerability and courage. The fact that over 1350 people have now signed this campaign and someone as renowned as Jody Day is endorsing it shows the validity of our story. And I hope it let's us all know we are not alone.
Thanks for your reply I’m doing g much better 😊 won’t let it get me down and made me even more determined to make a change. Like you have said before, if no one speaks up nothing will ever change.
