Just wondering; if you get an aura do you take your triptan/specific medication at the aura or the onset of headache? I've always heard to take treatment as early as possible which I thought meant aura but I've heard triptans are better taken at headache onset? Just curious what works for people
I also suffer from aura ,I do not use triptans or any thing else , I suffered with migraines for years I am now 65yrs .I found by using other things my migraines have become a lot better ,I have manipulation on my neck because that is were my aura was coming from , I was having three trapped nerves this did the trick, also since 18mth ago I have had botox injections in my face which i have only had one aura since ,I take normal headache tablets for occassional headache ,also check your diet , like chocolate, coffee , citrus fruit, cheese, and wine ,these are the things that set my migraines badly , best keep a daily diary this will hopefully give you a patern good luck
Triptans are most effective at the onset of the pain not the aura as it won't have as good affect. I normally now use aura as my warning and get prepared to battle the migrain hope you get some relief.
I take sumatriptans and preventative medications to talk to your gp they will help you.
Always take as soon as possible. The digestive system shuts down with migraine therefore medication taken orally must be taken at onset for it to work. Otherwise I inject with sumatriptan especially if I’ve woken with a migraine and it’s too late to medicate orally x
Slim do you mean take an oral triptan with aura? See this is where I got confused!
Sorry for late reply. I do not get aura with migraine. My friend does however and still takes triptans. I believe they are for migraine with or without.
No problem, with my latest bout of attacks I don't seem to be getting auras anyway so I may be joining team no aura!
Hi willowsarah,
I have auras as well. I take triptan at the onset of the migraine. I get auras when I don't have migraines. A neurologist recommended 500 mg niacin non-flush, and that helps the auras, they are not as severe. I take niacin daily - if I forget to take it, I can barely see.
