Hello there 😆 I take mag citrate cause it's the best at absorbing. I only take 300mg though.
I also use magnedium spray, that's good on my neck and shoulders.
Magnesium malate is supposed to be more gentle on your stomach and better for migraines, I have the same problem 🐶

Hi, I'm on my 6th day of taking Dolovent (Amazon/ or my health food shop which is £4 cheaper than Amazon)...This contains Magnesium & all other useful ant-migraine stuff at a specific dose... no upset tummy for me (but bright yellow urine!). So far so good, but it's v early days. I will keep everyone posted. (dose 2-4 per day; I'm taking 2 am & just one pm, as I think the Coenzyme 10 was keeping me awake- the bottle will last longer too!)😄
My migraine specialist recommended Magnesium malate which I take after food.I also use magnesium spray.Another way that my doctor suggested was to have bath or soak feet with Epsom salts.Veery relaxing and great way to absorb magnesium.You can buy Epsom salts cheaply on Amazon.
Thank you so much for this post and all the replies. I have struggled with taking magnesium due to it causing diarrhea so I will be trying the malate form which reviewers on Amazon have found helps with muscle pain and anxiety. All things I also experience along with the migraines.

One of the side effects of the magnesium is in fact laxative, it is used in some hospitals for patients before the operations for that...for the migraines I take the powder and 2 spoons at night with a pint of water.
Magnesium is also very powerful to calm down the nerves, I remember when I stopped smoking, the first weeks, when I was at the stage of nearly kill random strangers just for the joy of it (LOL) if it wasn't for the magnesium I would be serving time now
I wouldn't go past that dose, it would be far too much and the nasty side effects would show...I have no idea what that is in mg.

Hi I have been taking magnesium and since I have rang out have started experiencing background headaches again. so it seems to help. I need to buy some more what strength of the magnesium malate is better? thanks
I too would recommend magnesium malate. the general one you find in Holland and Barrett is the one that causes you to be loose. Forget which one it is. But the malate is the better one. I had to buy on prescription to get the malate type and it cost around £11 as a special.
I just wanted to say a few things: The commercial products hardly contain over 300mg of elemental magnesium, the amount written is the overall composition per capsule / dose / tablet. Magnesium oxide is the cheapest one and although the percentage of elemental magnesium is highest, the absorption rate is so poor that it is not worth buying it. You get about 12 mg elemental magnesium absorbed out of a 500 mg tablet due to its low solubility in water.
Magnesium citrate has 16% of elemental magnesium, so if you are taking 500mg Magnesium citrate capsule (for example), you are intaking 80mg of elemental magnesium. However its absorption rate is very high, so it is always better to use than Magnesium oxide or Magnesium hydroxide.
Magnesium malate has 6.5% of elemental magnesium, so if you are taking 500mg Magnesium malate capsule (for example), you are intaking 33 mg of elemental magnesium. Malate form is not as good as citrate as its absorption rate is slightly lower than Magnesium citrate, but if you have diarrhoea or any similar problem, certainly you should consider Magnesium malate.
In order to be effective against migraine, we need at least 200mg of elemental magnesium - I am not sure it is a good idea to take over 325mg elemental magnesium, but from my above comments, you can see you do not get anywhere near that amount of elemental magnesium from the commercially available products (unless of course you are taking several tablets/capsules per day).

Chelated magnesium supplements are best but it has less amount of elemental magnesium as the bonding molecules are larger - but more Mg is absorbed by our body from Chelated form. So in my opinion, Magnesium Bisglycinate (or Glycinate ) is the best available option, if GPs do not prescribe. Many people do not like Magnesium Stearate as an ingredient which is often found in these chelated magnesium supplements, but there are some which do not contain Magnesium Stearate.
