Hi.
I started having Migraines as a child at the rate of about 2 or 3 episodes a year. Each episode might last a couple of days. These reduced as I became a teenager and I had a final attack when I was 20. Following that I did not have another attack until I was 39. Over that period I had also put on a lot of weight. The migraines that I get are the classic ones with full aura and sometimes speech disruption. Over the following years the migraines increased until when I was 52 I was getting them at least 2 times a month. I put myself on a strict diet and the migraines actually increased to the point that I could go a few weeks without any and then I would get an episode where I could have multiple attacks in one day. I was also exercising a lot during this period. As a child I was never any good at sport on account that I would become breathless very quickly when I ran, this was strange as my lung capacity had been measured at 20% above the national average for my age and height. If I exercise hard now I still get the same problem.
During this time I came across an article on the internet that reported that some people who had had heart surgery for other reasons also had been cured of their migraines. I also found a number of articles about studies looking into the possibility that low dose aspirin (75mg) was effective in controlling classical migraine with aura. After consultation with my doctor (which you MUST do because of blood thinning side effects) I started taking 75mg of aspirin per day and have done so now for the last 2 1/2 years. During the initial 3 months I had what I would call a number of near misses, Blue blobs and flashes in my vision, but since then thing seem to have settled down and I haven't had another attack to date. I still get headaches but they are definitely not migraines. I still also carry Imigram which I have found to help once an attack has started but does nothing to prevent them.
I wouldn't say that this is conclusive proof as I've also lost a lot of weight which may have had an impact, but I'm sticking with it at the moment.
