Why does your brother having cancer impact on him telling your Mum about your depression?

I read it as the brother doesn't know about the depression. Maybe the mum doesn't know either. Sounds like the brother would inform his mum about the news of depression?. Why would this be so bad?. Is it because of the c with the brother has a lot already to deal with?.
