This is just the beginning! Tomorrow you'll wake up with purple spots all over your body, next month your arm will fall off and sometime next year you'll grow an extra head. You can run, but you can't hide ...

Seriously, I think there are two types of depression. The first is associated with an event - a death, divorce, redundancy etc. That kind of episode can be treated and I believe that you can walk away from it.

For those of us who are predisposed to feeling like shit in the very best of situations, I think it's a lifelong condition. You get peaks and troughs depending on what's in your life at that current time, and the quality of treatment you get.

I personally think I'll always have depression, but I might not always be depressed. Does that make sense? X

Lucy well said Reactive depression is easier and you might never be depressed

Again.

Janet have you been to. GP ? It's hard to answer exactly without knowing a

Bit about you. I would suggest a GP visit and take it from there. There are

Lots of Educational info on sites such as NHS which covers the FAQ and

The basics.

I have suffered for over 10 years but like Lucy I don't know if I will have

It for life or until St. Patricks Day. Lol

I have Reactive Depression caused by disability and other unpleasant things, read above.

Now I have been depressed now for about 40 years and still going strong, my condition started at college and I also suffered depression through childhood, now it is boarders on Mania, so Reactive depression can run through your life and possibly see you out at the end

This round of medications I am on for depression I have been popping for eleven years, so you see it can all be due to the patient and life choics, not forgetting lifes little horrors

All the best

Hi Janet, I would like say it goes away but it doesnt. It is just a case of how we deal with it. We need to tame the thoughts. Read a book called 'Black Dog'.

Have you been to see your gp. Maybe some medication would be good to start with. Then change your lifestyle. I like routines. Join a gym, go for walks, have time out where you do things you enjoy. I have strategies to cope.

As Lucy said you will have peaks and troughs in your moods. My life is full of these.

Photogeek gave good advice too. Keep in touch we are here to help.

Hello

Generally it depends on the person and the type of the depression you have, mine is reactive to a disability so sometimes I will rally out of the problem, and then I may suffer mania just before another cycle. For me this now has been the case for thirty years.

Yesterday I tripped and fell damaging me nose and leg, this was before I had suffered a manic attack, today I could not get any lower and feel in a lot of pain and depressed as hell.

Every thing with me I cannot tell from one day or the next, especially when my wife is working around the house or garden and I am in so much pain I am unable to help because I am suffering from my conditions

Hopefully you will remit and it will last, or you may perk up and it will last, all depends on you and your condition, I personally hope your depression will go and never come back although you need to understand and accept it may never go away and flare up every now and again.

Remember one in three of the population will suffer mental illness, some will get better after treatments, then will put the whole thing down to a hiccup in lifes wonderful mystery

Good Luck, hold on

A lot depends on how long 'sometime' is, what started it, whether you've received treatment quickly and how you react to the treatment received.

All replies are from people with long term conditions so their outlook is somewhat biased. Short term recovered people probably aren't even on here so it's very difficult to predict.

Try and stay strong and fight it if you can...the closer you can stay to 'normal', the better your chance of recovery.

if only we had a crystal ball to see ! Sometimes depression will be similar to grief, a reaction to a bad event, which fades out after a few weeks or months.

But for many of us the theory is that depression is caused, or rather made worse my our body chemistry, which is why anti-depressant meds will help some people...

What ever the cause of anyone's depression using self-help therapy that tries to change the way we think is going to help. look over some books on cognitive behaviour therapy , which give techniques for ways to change and challenge negative chains of thought.

I guess that while some of us will always be prone to reacting emotionally, there are ways to make the feeling less intense..
