Hi there. I'm 69, and have been taking Finasteride 5mg daily for about 5 years now for an enlarged prostate. I don't know whether it has had much of an effect; my symptoms are largely the same as before, and the urologists still tell me that at some point I will probably require surgery. I understand that the drug can take up to 6 months to have an effect.

The only part of my anatomy that has shrunk is my penis, which is now virtually invisible; a phenomenon not helped, I happily admit, by my increase in weight.

All good wishes and kindest regards,

SetteeSofa have you tried tamsulosin for your prostate symptoms? It markedly improved my flow and hesitancy issues.

Hi there!! Many thanks indeed for your kind comment.

Yes, I was on Tamsulosin for a number of years, but stopped taking it as I felt it was making my incontinence and urgency worse, and I was having ever more frequent 'wetness' episodes.

I've found Finasteride to be more effective (and it also may be helping me keep my otherwise thinning hair!!!).

So pleased Tamsulolsin is working for you, it's a blessed relief when we find a medication that is effective for our condition.

With all good wishes and kindest regards, and thanks again for your concern.

I found that drugs only slowed the growth but did not shrink at all. Eventually had surgery. There are some relative easy surgeries that do not have long lasting issues as long as the prostate is not too big. Mine got too big for easy surg so had to have an involved one

I akso take Finasteride and Alfuzosin daily. Shrinkage hasn't happened in the two or so years I've done so but my condition hasn't worsened. I do intermittent self cathetrisation to fully empty the bladder 2-3 times a day and this has stopped the urine infections I was getting every few months.
