I had viral meningitis 33 years ago which resulted in the amputation of my left leg, below the knee. My question is, can people start having issues with their brain years later as a result of the VM years before?

Can you experience brain issues 33 years after VM?
VM damages the brain. In my case I was told the brain stem was damaged and this area controls so many functions including autonomic activity. My experience tells me that nobody knows how an individual will be affected. I was misdiagnosed for a couple of months and after tests including lumbar punctures and MRI scans my neuro said 'The damage has been done and you just have to live with it.' Easy for him. I paid for a second opinion and was told the same. Today, more than 18 years later, I get new problems regularly and though I am sure most of these things are linked to that life changing day in April 2002, doctors can't prove a definite link so are not convinced. I need a wheelchair, have many physical problems, and get hallucinations, mental health issues, and progressive muscle wasting along with numerous serious pain challenges. You don't mention what brain issues you have and I respect why you may not want to talk about them on an open forum. Have you spoken to your GP or other health pro? This is essential as the problems you are having may be VR related even after so long but could need other investigations. Be assertive and demand answers or investigations.
I really hope you get somewhere.
Hi, any new problems arising many years after a meningitis experience may have a different cause. As suggested by another poster, the best course of action is to speak to your doctor about this. Best wishes.
