I wondered if anyone has experience of ‘supported permitted work’? My son has been in the support group of ESA for the past year which we both feel is the right group for him. He has worked in the past but it has always been part-time because of difficulties of staying in employment due to his moderate learning disabilities and mental health problems. Although we both feel the support group is the right group for him he would still like to work just a few hours a week to give him a sense of purpose. My worries are that if we explore this the DWP will try and move him into the Work Related Activity Group. Has anyone got any experience of this ?
Thanks

I would also be interested to hear how this has been for other people. My son is in the same situation. I have found this but it would be interesting to hear how this has worked for anyone with actual experience of it:
Supported permitted work is for people with a disability, illness or health condition who cannot work for more than a few hours each week. The work is supervised by a professional support worker. A professional support worker is someone who works for a public or voluntary organisation.
traumatic brain injury, visually impaired. 2 months out of hospital was seen by DWP doctor who asked me 3 easy questions. Name address and don!! Stopped my benefits. Lived off bank mum n dad 4 year awaiting appeal. Needed 6 points for life benefits was awarded 13!! Paid M&S a years rent etc. years later was called to aria, left dad alone whilst mum went with me by cab. Was told they didn’t need to see me?!! Got home to find dad had fallen in garden, laid there for an hour!!
I'm so sorry to read this, it must have been a living nightmare for you, and your parents, and I really hope that life is more comfortable for you now (sorry if poor choice of words). The government should be ashamed, not planning new ways to persecute and terrorise the most vulnerable members of our society but then we all know that already ...
Hi Clouds12My son is also in the support group and has just started a p/t job. It's vital to keep within the 16hrs a week and under the earnings limit. I have informed the DWP (very tentatively and I wondered how that would turn out!) and keep them up to speed with his earnings so they can't turn round and say they weren't informed. The job has done so much to improve his confidence so I hope it continues.
Yes, it is possible. You've just got to stay aware of the limitations in hours and earnings. My son works for a charity run for people with a LD and most of them are on the same benefits. He has lots of support around him, and there are DWP job coaches but I've had very little experience of them.
My son worked whilst in this category. He had a job coach from a charity to support him whilst undertaking the work. He only worked part time. There were no issues from the DWP. it may be necessary to demonstrate that your young person can only work with lots of support.
Hi, thanks for your reply, yes that’s a very good point you make about demonstrating that the person can only work with lots of support which would be the case for my son, thank you.
