I really feel your despair, frustration and anger at the authorities, far too many vulnerable adults are living in this hell. Giving them too many choices as opposed to institutionalism ( which was totally barbaric and needed to change) has created this situation for many and I agree it basically makes it easier for local authorities, as they don’t want the responsibility / cost of looking after them. Unfortunately through no fault of their own, LD adults aren’t able to contribute back to society in the way those in higher places would like them to do, so consequently they are at the bottom of the ladder when it comes to getting the help and support they really need. Covid is a good example of that, they were practically forgotten!! My son is 47 years old with severe learning disabilities and I was asked via a telephone call that if he caught Covid did I want him ventilated or not, if it was necessary! He doesn’t have any underlying health conditions, yet other 47 year olds weren’t asked that, what does that tell you? It also very much depends on where you live in the country and your status in life too, whether you are listened to or not. We are made of strong stuff, I know you’ll keep fighting for your brother. Take care

Yes they would never ask an MP that if they were being looked after by the NHS. It would be a different service.

I understand. Believe me, you are not alone in having these feelings. The system is in a terrible state and urgently needs fixing. As relatives we all do what we can but without support it can be very difficult. All I can say is good luck and keep on doing whatever you can.

So very sorry to read your post , its very freighting to read what is going on in the so called care system , It makes me so angry I don't know what to say ,

Take care . I can only sign petitions which are sent to my MP only to get a generic letter back that they have put money into council's? I also think independent living is not for everyone and they shouldn't all be put under the same umbrella, institutional care I agree is barbaric . There is a place that is gated with a group of really modern bungalows in a horse shoe shape and communal area , they have a great social life and 24hour care which is wonderful but council's will not pay for people to go there without a fight and even a court case .

Many thanks bless you for you your post you are so right all the best 💙

That is awful for you to see how negligent they are in helping your special needs person. It's all a cover up for no one else to see how they are neglecting their needs. I hope something positive comes along soon for you. xx

This is what they are doing and up until six weeks agao I was picking my brother up once and twice a week we where haveing a brilliant time and again because I had been complaining about the way he was living guess what they have played this card again full capacity and made my brother believe that we has a family want to have him sectioned and taken away from his flat and have now put the fear of god in his had that all the family want this and now nobody can go and help him or see him because the authorities don't want the complaints when all we want his the correct health and social care needs for his complex needs so now we has a family don't know now if we will ever see him again or if we do it will be in a box and I sorry to be so blut but this is the way I feel about this whole situation with the authorities many thanks to you for your support bless you so much take care 💙

It is The mental Health Act 2007 that needs to change. Another way of getting the right answer from social workers when they say “ it’s their choice” you reply “they have not had an informed choice”. Given consequences of their choices.

eg: it’s cold out today, do you want a coat or just your t-shirt. ( obviously the coat) . Now someone may say t-shirt because on that particular day they may not be coherent!

But if you explained to them the consequences ( May even have to take them outside)then they would choose the coat! It applies to all choices in life.

Hope this helps everybody!

Yes you are so right it is there choice but it not there choice that they where born with these complex needs and none of the authorities are taking this into consideration with these poor vulnerable adults just using and abuseing there mental health and making out that there familys are the bad guys and this is the authorities way of keeping these vulnerable people locked up out of sight out of mind what a,dirty game these authorities are playing just to save money not to give these vulnerable adults the correct care it is awful but now I feel the next time I see my brother will be in a wooden box and this is worst though in the world and the authorities have made me think and feel this way I just don't know how the authorities are getting away with this type of abuse and neglect it don't matter whitch way I turn every one in trust of the authorities because they have a title before there names like social worker support workers doctors and authorities nobody wants to question there authority and get to the real truth and ask them to produce any proof and evidence I have the proof and evidence but nobody wants to listen to me I am just a concerned family member I have no rights to have a say in how these authorities are treating my brother you know the one who grew up with him and you know the one who knows there brothers mental health better then these so called professional who have not got a clue and no qualifications and no experience in some who they don't even know but want to judge there familys by say we has the authorities have there best interests and the authorities think they know best what a absolutely joke the only thing they are experts on is how to use and abuse these vulnerable adults for there own gain absolutely and totally unprofessional behaviour by these so called professional people what a absolutely joke all these authorities are I would not even trust them to look after my pet dog because if they treat humans like caged animal god knows what they would do to actual animals sorry everyone this how they have made me feel I am just stating my opinion and many thanks for your support all the best 💙

I agree Head_cook it’s the Mental Health Act that needs changing. I understand what your saying about informed choices and the consequences in making these choices, but I guess in the real world their not always given informed choices or understand the consequences. This will be determined by whoever is asking them to make a choice, but would be almost impossible to do with all aspects of their life, which is the case and why this isn’t right. Time is limited in many scenarios so they aren’t given informed choices unfortunately, so full capacity status isn’t a true reflection. It is as pickandmix says a get out of jail free card.
