hi adjo you can get access to adult facilities as a 17 yr old, although this might dipend on borough, but it does happen here as i can say from personal experience.
it might be worth asking his social worker now,it might take a while to find the right service and place if he has complex needs as well, for example if he cant cope with other service users noises.
its also worth asking now because there is a slow down on finding a place right now,or so ive been told.
how it will work in adult care is social services do something called tendering,as far as i know-without mentioning any names- they put out your sons needs to a secure intranet available to services only and they get three of the cheapest quotes back, they might let your son go and visit the three places to see which place they prefer or they will pick one for him.
From my experience the social worker will do nothing unless you make a fuss. I had to find somewhere that I thought would be suitable before the SW did anything. He then looked at everything available on their list, none of which was suitable and then take my choice to panel to get funding and prove that the social services preferred options couldn’t meet my sons needs. Luckily he agreed with me that the other services weren’t suitable so put a bit of effort into proving that but if I hadn’t made the first move my son would still be living at home. Social services will always go for the cheapest option which is living in the family home. Good luck!
