I have signed the petition , I really do think older carers should be mentioned on this petition, Overlapping payments such as a basic state pension means there is no recognition for 24/7 care we give to our adult children , Underlying pension credit is a pittance and decreased when state pension rises , Pensiononable parents recieve the same as every other pensioner that have no caring responsibilities . I am a 68 yrs old widow and my son is 36, I do everything for him . I never hear this situation mentioned.

I totally agree with you, I feel really grieved by the way we have been treated by the system. My son was born in the 70’s, I had to give up my career as a midwife, due to divorce as no childcare available then, or support of any description, and live on benefits which I hated. I survived on income support as I was classed as a single person, CARERS allowance paid your National Insurance stamp to protect your State Pension, so there was no financial gain for myself. This was the case right until I retired, I am now 72 my son is 46 and still living with restricted finances. Savings are restricted to a minimum, why can’t we be allowed to save a reasonable amount to leave our son’s or daughter’s when our lives have been so restricted. These savings limits have not changed in all the years we have been on benefits. As you said we receive the same as anyone else our age on benefits who haven’t lived with the restrictions we have had too in our caring role. I feel the need for a petition raising this issue but I am rather tired fighting for my son all his life. It is still the case that many of those born before the changes that are available now have been forgotten. It’s been a hard life. Although my son is in now in supported living, only the last 5 years, it has come at a huge cost to my health as a lone carer.

Hi ladies, i purposely didn't include other things in this petition as i think to get anywhere it has to be very specific.

Thanks Alouema, I feel it might have to be a separate petition, will give it some thought unless anyone wants to take this on. 😎

Thankyou for your reply , it's a shame this petition doesnt include older unpaid carers as we are all doing the same careing rolls. As I dont often see many carers in my position I feel unfortunately making a separate petition wouldnt be of any use . I have written to my mp in the past on this subject and others , I just recieve a generic letter with excuses , I dont feel I have a voice to be heard.

Most adults of my sons age are in some sort of care which wouldnt be right for my son at the moment, he has just lost his dad and his nan , both he was very close too , he doesnt understand that he will not see them again ,even though I try to explain and reasure him, he just doesnt understand which is heart breaking , so I feel home is the best place for him .

He has lived all of his 36 years at home except for 3year term time mencap college in Somerset when he left SLD school at 19, so I have been through alot trying to get the best for him from the time he was 1year old when we found out something was wrong , Sadly he will never be able to live independently . I feel recognition of older carers in this petition would of been appreciated.

I believe there will be a lot of CARERS in the same position as you we just don’t know about them. As I said my son lived with me as a lone carer all his life till 5 yrs ago when he was 41. It was only through necessity due to my health problems that we had to go down the route of supported living. When our children were born they lived at home dependent on parents even when they became adults. When the concept of supported living came about our adult children were forgotten about as it applied to those at the time who were leaving school and moving onto living independently. Not all would have chosen this path but it was at least suggested to those leaving school, and parents today are more aware so start this process much earlier. Saying that there will still be many who feel it’s not right for them at this particular time.

Yes I am looking also for a suitable placement for my son , I sometimes wish I had done it earlier when his dad was here , I fully understand that everyones situation is different and I for one never know if I'm doing the right thing . Just hope 🙂
