I want to say thanks to everyone who signed up to join us for this run. You guys definitely kept me going!!! I put myself down for 10 miles and, despite overdoing things this last week, my legs were recovered enough this morning for me to give it a go. My plan said 12 miles, my head said I wanted 20k, but I was determined it would be at least 10 miles and not a step less!
It was hot, it was windy; the road surface was often poor with either a cobbled surface or a mixture of fixed and loose rock in hard packed and. But at least it wasn't undulating, or steep!
I had to run laps round the place I'm staying, and had hidden a couple of bottles of electrolyte mix on the wall so I could fill my bottles twice as I went past. Mr9389 had kindly popped out on each occasion to encourage me on my way!
It was pretty gruelling, but I made the 20k in the end. The first 10 miles I did in 2h 02m and 42s.
But how was your run? Let us know, either in the comments below or in your own race report (we do love reading those), confirm your distance and time and at the end of the week we will draw a winner. You can find the results collected so far here: docs.google.com/spreadsheet...
If you would like to join us for our next virtual run in April (April 27th - May 4th), and haven't already registered your interest, then please let us know below or in the original pinned post here: healthunlocked.com/marathon...
I will update the April participant spreadsheet very soon. I will also set up a new (entirely optional) Strava group where we can share some kudos and encouragement as we move to our April targets and we'll ask for suggestions for a new playlist too. Watch this space.
But let's not get too far ahead of ourselves, first tell us how this run went (remember you have until Sunday 2nd March to complete any (or all!) of the distances 5k, 10k or 10 miles)!

Amazing work, Linda! What a comeback. Hoping that means you are totally over the aches and pains now (assuming you havenβt earned any new ones). Do rest and take it easy for a bit!
Haha! My crushed spirit is coming back πGood luck and enjoy that 10k. No heroics in the cold, nothing to catch the attention of the physio ... please!
I am back with my physio on Thursday anyway. I can feel the benefit of the work she did last week.
Tomorrow will be a revisit of the scene of last weekβs drama. I am beginning to think that I should carry an aluminium blanket when I go a long way off piste on my own!
Well done Linda, I didn't expect 20k after your post from yesterday (terrifying) πͺπ
I did the planned 5k, setting out at 9.30 this morning...I wasn't sure I would as I have another cold (so frustrating) and ideally need to be well for tea out with my son and his new girlfriend, but I didn't feel too bad so dosed up and set off!
I wasn't at full energy so did some walking as needed hence the time of 39:36, but I still enjoyed it and am happy to have completed my first 5k of the year π
Now to continue building up with a longer run each weekend ready for the HU10K π
By yesterday, with the first sign of improvement, my hopes were rising. Having said that, I thought it would be 10 miles and with more walking than I did. So I'm pretty pleased.Another cold is so unfair, especially if you are out this afternoon. Enjoy that, it sounds exciting (ai hope you approve of the young lady π).
Extra kudos to you for getting out and doing it. Like me, no one can take that effort and achievement away from you π
I'd told my son I wouldn't risk not attending the meal because of the run, but I couldn't help myself, when you want to run there's not much that'll stop you...if I'm not feeling it at 5pm I'm defo gonna fake it π
She seems nice, I've only met her at the front door for a few minutes so this is the first time we'll be meeting properly...my Mum's coming along too and she's even more of a chatterbox than I am so that will help. Hopefully it goes well coz I've never seen my son so smitten π
Ha, forgot to add my own run. That's if it counts. The thing is I looked at the weather forecast (Saturday - mild with lovely sunshine, Sunday - extremely windy plus rain ) and the pragmatist in me decided on the Saturday, I know, a full day too early. With a skirt to return to John Lewis via Waitrose, what better 'run with a purpose' than to do the lanes which I could easily make to 10k, pick up my free drink then a walk across to the bus stop to pick up the bus home. To say Mr64 came with me is an overstatement, as the only time I saw him in the run was when he went zooming past me. It was a lovely run, very quiet and a very good decision. It's been over a month since my last 10k I've had a few minor setbacks recently, including an 11 day self imposed absence from runs down to a minor injury. It wasn't my fastest run, in fact very slow, but I'm very pleased to have done it with no ill effects. Time 1hr 17mins.
Yay to your first 10k in ages. And, for the record, it wasn't slow!!! And of course it counts. I almost sneaked mine in a day early - my plan said Long run on Saturday - but with my legs still being sore, I took advantage of the extra day πWell done on your creativity, adaptability and the super running πππ
well done everyone. As my planned walk was rearranged and the weather was not as horrendous as forecast I went for a walk. 5.95km, just over the hour and garmin gave me a new badge!
Hi linda9389 , well done on your run, brilliant! Mine was an out and back with my Sunday run group, along quayside & local cycle track mainly- must have been 20 or so of us there . There were options to turn back at any time so I turned at around 5.5km , aiming to finish near my workplace for a coffee, but forgot we'd done a field loop 1st ! Was going round some dog walkers by veering off the path onto the muddy grass ,didn't realise the dog was on an extendable lead and it looped round barking and I slid down on my bum and hands with only 300m to go! Maybe I should have shouted out I was coming round but I did go quite wide. Admittedly my old dog George would have done similar with runners! They were apologetic and checked I was OK, I was fine just quite muddy! So got up and finished the run then went off to amuse fellow group members with my muddy posterior! π€£π€£
Time was 1.12 for 10k , a gentle run catch up chatting to lots of friends perfect for today and great to have a free weekend to enjoy . Lunch next then cinema! πxxx
Ohh, a busy - but very nice - day for you Ali. I do hope you get time to clean your bum before lunch and the cinema πWell done in the 10k, and your generosity of feeling towards the dog walkers. As you say, sometimes these things can't be helped.
Well run! 20k a nice round number too. ..pleased to hear that your legs have forgiven you for your unscheduled climbing expedition!
I went out for my HU 10 miles today too. It was NOT hot but very windy and rather wet towards the end.
So, I started at 9:37 . -a few minutes late but decided I could justify that by pretending I was at a large event and was queueing to start.(In reality I was running alone in loops around my home town).
Comedy podcasts etc lined up , gloves on and off I went. It wasn't easy in the wind . I am completely baffled as to how the wind was against me whenever I went up hill . Surely if it was against me when running in one direction it should be behind me when running the other ??
My half marathon plan wanted a 2 hour easy run tomorrow so I rescheduled it for today-perfect. My Garmin was measuring in Km . I spent the last 15 minutes converting miles / kms in my head. Worked out it was 16 and a "bit" km but determined not to fall short I continued after the 2 hrs to 17.5 km.
Back home, stretch, hot shower then time to look at stats.
Result 10 miles 1:56:57. I'll take that. A little slower than my HM pace but genuinely run at the easy pace demanded by my training plan.
A great way to spend a wet and windy Sunday morning and excuse to chill out on a wet and windy Sunday afternoon. Thanks for organising and inspiring.
Oh wow! That sounds like an awesome achievement. You beat me hands down however I look at it. Wind and rain is no fun at all ... but chilling out, feeling smug on a wet and windy afternoon is the best!!!
Thanks, I couldn't have done it in the heat !. I'm definitely a cold weather runner and actually enjoy running in the rain. Nit so keen on that challenging wind tho'
Well done linda9389 on that 20k run. Pretty amazing considering your adventures of the last few days!
Thanks to a gentle nudge from SueAppleRun I decided only a day or two ago to do the HU virtual 5k. I found myself getting quite excited at the prospect, so this morning I set off with a plan to walk with the occasional trot depending how my injured knee felt. Well Iβm glad to report that it held up quite well and I managed to walk/trot in 50:15. I set off at 07:45 and everyone I saw said good morning. I had a daft grin on my face the entire time - I have so missed my early morning runs.
Seeing the physio on Tuesday so I hope I wonβt get a telling off π«£π€£
A Did Not Start from me today. The weather was foul here (60mph gusts and driving rain). Also I seem to have angered my left calf/ankle at yesterday's parkrun on the beach at Pwllheli.
Hopefully I'll be able to do something later in the week.
Ooh, that sounds like good Welsh weather!!! A DNS and deferral sounds like the only way forward. Good call!!! Hopefully a better opportunity will present itself soon π
the London Winter 10k was also my choice for the HU10k.
Its been quite a while since my last 10k - I canβt remember it to be honest - I should probably look it up later, however, this is a great event that Iβd recommend to anyone and I managed to get to the finish line for the particularly nice medal!
Sorry, but I was a DNF. In fact I didn't start. I felt a bit sick on the Parkrun on Saturday and things went rapidly downhill after that. Felt feverish with a high heart rate. Spent the rest of the weekend in bed taking it easy. These things happen.
Oh no, that sounds absolutely rotten. I hope you're soon over it. Feel free to give us a 5k, 10k or 10 mile time during the week though - any time up to and including this coming Sunday.
Hiya Linda! Congrats on your run and to everyone else this weekend.
I moved my long run so it was on Saturday, so I only did 10k yesterday. I think it was the right decision as we were able to have loads of fun at the Winter 10k.
I do, however, have a 3 hour run on Sunday, so that will definitely be over 10 miles, so I could try again π³
Go on TC, there's a double in you for sure ... in fact the treble is there isn't it? Glad you had such a great time in London βοΈπ what time should I record for the 10k TC?
That's brilliant, well done! I signed up for the 10k, but somehow ended up doing 9 miles. I wasn't sure if I would be doing it as had been feeling rough all week with a constant headache and then migraines mixed in, but with encouragement from my husband I got out there and did it! Looking at my run, I passed the 10k mark in 1 hour 32 minutes. I was aiming for a nice slow easy run. It was slow, but not necessarily easy!
You are a warrior Linda πͺ Amazing that you managed a 20K after all that! Well done ππ
Have you gone off-piste with the HH plan? The longest run on that plan is 16K but then whatβs another 4K when you've had a horrible experience π Maybe the adrenaline gave you energy!
Ok. A tiny bit off piste, but planned that way from the outset. So I have always gone full distance in training before. My head couldn't deal with three 10 mile runs and leaving the rest to race day.
So I adapted the last two weeks of the plan, adding a mile to each of the next 10 mile long runs run to get to 12 miles, cutting the same distance from the easy runs so the weekly mileage total was unchanged.
I also added a low mileage penultimate week so I had two weeks rest, oops I mean tapering! I thibk I took inspiration from the NRC plan for that week.
So, that just leaves me with 11k next Saturday and a few shorter runs.
The main way I have gone off listening is by not crosstraining ... other than my standard walks a nd pilates and a few short NRC workouts.
I've enjoyed the structure of this Hal Higdon plan though, so I'll probably give it another shot for Cardiff in October, making sure I use my bike for cross training. Well, that's the intention anyway!!!
Hi Linda. I sneaked in a 01:08:15 10k which I have added to the score board. One of those runs when for the first 5 k my legs felt as though they needed a squirt of WD40, but after that, everything felt really smooth. A drop of Tailwind and a couple of Bloks may have helped!!
A few mini mishaps on the way, but I am really relieved to have got this 10k in. Hopefully I am now through my customary winter hitches π€.
Hello all. Sorry for the late post. I did the 10mile run yesterday morning. Set off about 8am and threw a brand new route into the mix. Railway line on one side, coast on the other.
Conditions were pretty good until towards the end when the wind picked up but I was on my last couple of miles by then. The route had a 2 steepish hills as well.
Now Iβve got my excuses out of the way, my time was 1hr 50mins and 15secs which was a fair bit away from my PB of 1hr 45 set in October.
Was very enjoyable though so thank you all for arranging this VR.
10k done my longest run since the half marathon back in December. It was tough going but I'm glad I did it as I now start preparing for the marathon in April I just hope my Plantar Fasciitis is not to bad with this. Well done everyone who's ran/walked π π
Fabulous Tessie! Well done. Tough means you worked hard!!! I hope your foot is OK amd not aggravated too much. It will be a good test of where you can start the marathon training from.
Thank you so much for this event linda9389 and the team. I was intending to do 10k on the weekend but the weather was horrendous here-so much wind it was dangerous. Iβm hoping to squeeze in a 10k before the deadline but just in caseβ¦Iβll enter a bonus 5k run done yesterday as part of a 6k. Thatβs my longest run so far this year. Flu took a heavy toll!
The time for the first 5k was 31.39 which included some lovely jeffing walk breaks with opportunities to photograph the village crocuses. Hopefully Iβll be back with a 10k time!!
Congratulations on your epic run. Thatβs one deserves a medal!
Oh how pretty Miss U - they survived the wind! Well done on the 6k. Your distances will gradually ramp up and the flu will become a mere blip as you forge ahead. You've come back before, you know you can do it π₯°
That sounds amazing Dexy - blue sky and sunshine. You made absolutely the right call.BTW was that a photo of you and Codfish that landed in my inbox yesterday courtesy of parkrun? A great article β€οΈ
The short run was good. The soleus calf muscle was complaining a little for the first 10 minutes or so but calmed down for the rest of the run.
Most importantly, after the run there was no worsening, which is what was happening earlier in the week. On Tuesday evening I was starting to limp a bit and I hadn't even run that day! That was the clue that made me check my laces.
I'm going to see what happens at parkrun tomorrow.
Hello Linda, Very pleased to have completed my 10km this morning. My first 10km for 3 months. My arthritis flare up in my left knee was 23rd December so no running for 2 weeks and then run/walk. So pleased to be running without walking for one month now π. I told myself that I was not allowed to increase my pace with the aim of looking after my knees. The run was a delight mostly along a canal, while listening to podcasts and my time 1hr 21min 28sec. Thank you very much for this event and happy injury free running to you πππ»ββοΈ
Whoopsie, sorry just noticed your column heading of elapsed time. I gave you moving time, as that is the headline figure Mr Garmin gives me. Presumably I set it to do this ages ago. I had a few photo stops and one lace tying stop so 1:25:31 elapsed time π
I was hoping to get a 10 mile run done in the week but sadly the legs said "No!". I got out in Sunday 2nd and completed 13 miles, am I still in the timeframe?
