My right knee has been feeling a bit funny for a while (I tripped over in August and I think it’s something to do with that) so I got an MRI scan on it last week and the report shows damage to the ACL and a depression fracture in the lateral femoral condyle. Had to Google this and lots of other medical terminology in the report but basically I’m out of action for a little while. The report has advised urgent orthopaedic surgical referral.
I am actually quite relieved that it is something fixable. I was dreading being told it was a chronic problem and that my running days are over - so in some ways it’s good news! I’ve got more running clothes and shoes than normal clothes and shoes! Not ready to give that up yet 🤣.
So, I’m token sorting at parkrun tomorrow and will do as much strength training as possible to keep my fitness up. Determined to stay involved in running in any way possible while my stupid knee recovers. I’ve got a few races booked in 2025 so it had better hurry up!

Oh no!! Poor you. I totally get the relief at the diagnosis. Hopefully knowing it’s not chronic problem will help with your recovery. Mentally, it’s tough but having a clear idea of what’s wrong and what’s the likely time course is so helpful Sending hugs and recovery vibes your way!
At least with a proper diagnosis you know what you're dealing with.
Your positive sounding attitude will help enormously and your level of fitness will ensure a far quicker recovery. Once a runner always a runner 🏃♀️and, as you say, you can’t give up all those shoes and clothes yet!
Keep coming here to stay in touch. Wishing you lots of healing vibes xxx
loving the positivity in your post! Also glad to hear you have a fixable problem rather than something chronic. Might be time to get out the bike. It’s not load bearing and gets you outside!! Not the best time of year but I had a lovely pootle out on mine in the week as part of my recovery plan. Here’s wishing you a speedy recovery xx
That’s a good idea Shakes, thanks. I’ve been to the gym and tried the exercise bike and sure enough it was fine so I might just get outside on my bike 👍🏻 xx
Nawh, Mudita. That's just unfair! But such good news that it is something fixable. Any idea how long you will have to wait to hear more on the surgery?
Having been out for months after a metatarsal fracture several years ago now, I hear you! Your positive attitude will stand you in great stead. Keeping fit in other ways and keeping in touch with running in any way you can, will both pay huge dividends and you can comeback stronger and more determined than ever. May time pass quickly and patience be plentiful! Sending healing hugs 🥰
Ok, it could have been worse but that still sucks, to put it mildly. Two traits which shine out through your posts are strength and determination. They will get you through this and bring you back stronger than ever; the main hurdle is getting the operation done soon by someone who is really good and committed to getting you out with your running shoes on pdq. I know from my own long lay offs that it is hard to keep posting when you can’t run; quite hard to watch others running too. Drop in for a catch up (and hopefully the odd laugh 🤭) whenever you feel like it, or even if you don’t feel like it Xx
I am not a patient patient at all! But, provided I have a recovery plan in which I have got confidence, doing the rehab and seeing progress week on week gives me a bit of the buzz which not running takes away. I am still in the tunnel at that point, but definitely walking out of it rather than into it. 🤞🤞🤞🤞 for an early op date.🙂
Sorry to read this Mudita11 - but love your positive attitude and you’re right, you can now get this injury fixed and who knows, come back even stronger! Good luck.🙂
Thanks Cheeky, I will. I’m doing the Cancer Research London 10k in February which I think you’re doing too. Got a hotel booked! And I’ve not ruled out doing the Bath Half - so this stupid knee has better sort itself out quickly 🤣 xx
Really sorry to hear that Mudita. As you say, a diagnosis is better than no diagnosis but an enforced break for surgery will still be frustrating - as I found when waiting for my hernia op. Hope your wait isn't too long.
Thank you Jonathan. These things are sent to try us aren’t they? But I’m sure I’ll be back running soon, as were you after your op. I’ll keep reading this forum and will post the occasional update xx
I love your positive mindset and attitude to this setback Mudita11 . It has given me encouragement that my ongoing ankle injury (yep, it’s sore again) could be fixable. I’m seeing an orthopaedic surgeon on 13th December so I’m hoping she will have good news for me.
I’m sorry to hear your news. But there’s plenty of room on the IC. I’m 10 weeks post stress fracture and have been volunteering at parkrun every week. Terrific organization.
Sorry to hear that you’re on the IC but hopefully not to be a party pooper, have you checked the waiting times for orthopaedic surgery? They are notoriously long on the NHS and I doubt you will be back within 6 months at least.
Sorry, I missed this post Mudita11 . I’m so glad you have got your MRI scan done; at least now the consultants can work out a plan of action to get you fixed and back to where you want to be. You are doing all the right things, keeping in touch with runny buddies who know exactly what it’s like being on the injury couch when you’d rather be running, and volunteering at parkrun so you can still feel part of it.
Keep on keeping on and we will keep fingers crossed for an early appointment at the hospital. Sending love from me and UTS.
