I share the good runs so it’s only fair to share the ones that don’t go as planned!
I missed my long run last weekend due to a niggle (which thankfully has resolved). Last long run was a 15k two weeks ago, so my (lack of) plan today was a somewhat confused 12-15k - maybe 16k if all goes well…(it didn’t !🤣) Just to point out, I am usually quite clear on my plan for a run - my indecision was born out of not being where I wanted to be on my HM plan…lesson learned.
To be fair, all was going fairly well until about 12.5/13k. I had gone slowly and steadily and all felt good. But then it all started to feel really tough and my poorly thought out plan meant I couldn’t decide whether to stop or push on…you know the thought process! Anyway, I called it a day at a little over 14k, which I know is absolutely fine and the right call given how I was feeling (tired - two bad nights probably didn’t help - and dead legs. )
On return home, I felt disappointed with myself, that I hadn’t pushed on to 15/16k and questioning my progress.😕 Also annoyed that the back of my left knee felt uncomfortable 🤷♀️ A few hours (and a much needed nap) later, I know I just have to put this down to being ‘one of those runs’.
Just wanted to share - I know progress isn’t linear and this HM training can feel tough at times.
Anyone else relate?
ps the knee feels a lot better now.👍🙂

That’s still a mighty good distance Sandra, and you did exactly the right thing calling it a day when you did. Imagine pushing on and really wrecking your knee?
Please don’t feel annoyed with yourself. Your body knew best, and you listened. ❤️
To focus on the good, you ran 14k, that is a brilliant distance considering you weren’t feeling it today Sandraj39 . I know those runs where the legs suddenly start to feel heavy and it feels such hard work. You know you did the right thing by calling it a day because you then start losing the right running poise and become susceptible to injuries . So you were your own best coach. 😉
Yup, some runs don't go as we hope, especially when we aren't really sure what we should want! But they do remind us just how good most of our runs are and just how much we have to be thankful for. You made a sensible decision in stopping when you did; 14k is a great distance and that must not be forgotten Onward!!!
You did really well to get to 14K on a day when you weren't feeling it.
I think we all have days like this. Over the last week, I've just been feeling particularly unmotivated - which is the first time I've felt that since starting back in February.
You got out the door, had a good run given the circumstances, and you're resting and getting ready for your next run...that's what's important...
You made the right call Sandra. I can definitely relate too. Yesterday was one of those runs. It was really hot and humid and I poorly chose a very exposed route. I also mixed up the directions and got there an hour late which made it warmer still. And did not plan my nutrition and hydration well enough. But we learn and move onto the next one right? 🙂.
I had a 'bit of a yukky'run, yesterday...I used Suckcessful Run with CB...he read my mind...but as he says, a run is a run and each run has a purpose...You did well...and this finish line....a new starting line!
Oh yes. I’ve changed a few runs around on my plans simply because I couldn't face a long run or something was still a bit achey. Overall, it makes no difference. The important thing is to keep getting the miles on the legs and in this case, every run counts.
You managed 14K which is a very respectable contribution towards your overall training.
You clearly made the right decision because your knee feels much better now, so well done 👍
Glad you’re feeling ok now 🙂. A sleep does wonders 😀
Sometimes our runs just “suck”. Not sure who said that. Probably Sally Macrae 😁. Fortunately they’re few and far between and we can forget them once ticked off.
My 13k today felt tougher than expected Sandra. My average heart rate was way up on normal, which I suspect was the result of lousy hydration. That said, I completed the run at a good pace; but losing 2 points on VO2 max kind of spoiled the show!
As you observe, some runs just don’t feel good regardless of how good the stats look at the end! We just consign them to the dustbin of history and move on to the next good one. There isn’t always a discernible reason…other than the fact that we are not machines. 14k done is an amazingly good outcome for a run you were not happy with !👍
