CHIPPENHAM LONGEST DAY 10K RACE REPORT (and falling for the bling ๐Ÿซจ)

I ran this on Wednesday night. The weather was perfect. As I said to a fellow runner, itโ€™s much nicer running a race in the summer in the evening knowing it will get cooler rather than a morning race when it will usually get hotter. This suited me perfectly ๐Ÿ˜Ž

It was a 730 start so I had a fairly lazy day and pottered around the garden. Well, apart from the dentist appointment in the morning ๐Ÿ˜ฌ Iโ€™ve done a few evening races and so I knew what and when to eat, always a few hours beforehand, as I canโ€™t eat much afterwards. My back/hip niggle from last week had got a lot better although it was still there hovering but I knew I was good to go ๐Ÿ™‚

My husband volunteered again to drive me there which is a much valued gift as it takes the stress out of getting there and parking up. This is a new race for me and there was a choice of about five car parks so we left early to make sure we got to the closest one, which was fab as it was just around the corner from the runnersโ€™ village.

I picked up my bib and then had a quick loo break (no queues!) and waited for the start. A samba band started playing for us in preparation and took us all to the start line, in the centre of the town centre, about 600 of us ๐ŸŽถ๐Ÿฅ

It was a single lap course which I much prefer and because Iโ€™d not run this course before everything was new and interesting which makes the time go faster.

For the first few Ks after the start we were running on footpaths or on roads. I thought this was a closed road event but it wasnโ€™t, although the roads were wide and there was little traffic, and the few cars around were all very patient and obliging as they waited at junctions to let the hordes of runners by.

We hadnโ€™t done 2K when I saw a poor chap returning back to the start and limping badly. I felt for him because we probably all know how he feels โ˜น๏ธ

After the roads we turned off into the countryside and had a good few Ks on a bridle path. Overhanging trees made it quite dark but it was lovely and cool and we didnโ€™t have to worry about any traffic. It was just after the 6K marker when I was feeling strong and in a great rhythm and preparing to overtake the lady in front when I was aware of something happening to my feet and suddenly I was on the ground sprawling in the dirt ๐Ÿ™Š It all happened so quickly that I didnโ€™t have time to prepare and so I fell hard. I think I almost bounced ๐Ÿคฃ at least thatโ€™s what I remember. I found myself skidding on my right side with shots of pain in my shoulder, hip, knee and my hands which Iโ€™d obviously used instinctively to cushion the fall. Unbelieveably, my first thought was that I hoped this wouldnโ€™t stop me from getting the bling and the second thought was to pause the Garmin ๐Ÿ‘ Two runners in front stopped to see if I was OK and I did a quick mental check and said yes I was fine. I thanked them for stopping and got up, pressed resume on the watch and carried on. I looked back and saw it was a big stone that was sticking out of the ground. I was wearing sunglasses and with the darkness from the tree canopy I just didnโ€™t see it.

The worst pain was my left hand and I could see it was covered in dirt but hey ho I was able to run, I felt OK and I didnโ€™t dare look at my knee! Iโ€™ll deal with the pain afterwards I thought ๐Ÿ™„

Leaving the bridle path, lovely country roads were next and then for the remaining few Ks, some quiet residential roads where folks were outside clapping and cheering us on. The marshals were, as usual, wonderful and we couldnโ€™t do this without them.

At the final push the church bells started to ring and I took this as a sign. I love the sound of bells, and with the crowd cheering too, I knew I was going to finish strong. When I turned a corner and saw the line I had enough energy to sprint. I even surprised myself with how good I was feeling. I was within touching distance of that bling and nothing was going to hold me back ๐Ÿคฉ

At last I crossed the finish line and headed straight to a group of children who were handing out the medals ๐Ÿ˜ How lovely is that? A young girl put one around my neck and I felt like an Olympic champion ๐Ÿ…

The organisers promised a selection of surfaces and they were right. I loved the variety and the evening time and the atmosphere. Iโ€™ll definitely do this one again.

Chip time 1:05:56.

Since then Iโ€™m bruised, grazed and a bit sore. My knee was swollen the day afterwards but that has gone down now, thank goodness. My shoulder hurts the worst. So probably no running for a few days โ˜น๏ธ But you know what Iโ€™m going to say, it was worth it for you-know-what ๐Ÿ… I love it! One of my favourites โค๏ธ

We are all so different aren't we? I don't have any interest in medals but I am enjoying my half marathon mug. It must feel so lovely striding out again after what seemed to me far too long on the ic

Falls shake us up, I'm glad you were able to finish , you deserve that beautiful bling, a bit of rest until you fully recover now and looking back with a smile at a race well run

We donโ€™t fall so easily when weโ€™re beyond 10 ๐Ÿคฃ so I just didn't think about it and kept imagining my hands on the medal ๐Ÿคฉ

I've had a couple of falls and they do come as a surprise. Your hands on the medal ๐Ÿ˜

I know! Honestly, there it was sticking up right in the middle of the path. If I hadnโ€™t been wearing sunglasses Iโ€™m sure I would have seen it. A lesson there methinks.

Brilliant report Irishprincess and really good news that you were able to continue. I know exactly what you mean when you're in the flow (I call it 'sitting in') and a stone or raised root trips you up. An excellent time and really lovely, unique medal ๐Ÿ… ๐Ÿ˜€

what a lovely piece of bling, well done you for picking yourself up and carrying on. So glad to hear that the damage is minor, hope the aches ease soon. Sounds like a wonderful experience, running in the evening with a good crowd. Enjoy the bling!!

Hard core princess!! Nothing was going to get between you and your bling! So pleased that you appear to have got off relatively lightly. Falling on stony ground is really bad newsโ€ฆ.and an excellent time too. ๐Ÿฅ‡๐Ÿ†๐Ÿ™‚

The bruises are coming out now and every day we have a lovely different colour ๐Ÿ˜‚

Just so pleased it wasnโ€™t worse. I lost 5 weeks of running following a running fall just before we came to Scilly last year. Hope the bruising disappears quickly. ๐Ÿ™‚

First of all, I hope you are feeling better and on the mend. I had a similar incident on the canal path a few weeks ago. I didn't hit the ground, but tripped on a stone and stumbled and my only thought in that slow-mo phase, was please don't let me roll into the canal!

Secondly - that is some bling!!! I will have to find myself in Chippenham next year!!

Irishprincess profile image

No, you definitely donโ€™t want to roll into a canal! ๐Ÿ™€

Iโ€™m so relieved you appear to just have bumps and bruises though - and most importantly you were able to finish the race. Can you imagine โ€ฆ.. leaving .โ€ฆ without โ€ฆ.. the โ€ฆโ€ฆ bling? ๐Ÿ˜จ๐Ÿ˜ฉ๐Ÿ˜ฑ

I finally got there IP, sorry Iโ€™m late. You are right, the bling is well worth having and you certainly deserve it after your bumps and scrapes en route. Well done you on getting up and finishing the race. I do hope youโ€™ve had no repercussions from your fall. ๐ŸŒž๐ŸŒ›๐ŸŒŸ

Itโ€™s interesting to see the bruise colours change from day to day ๐Ÿ•ต๏ธโ€โ™‚๏ธ And I now have blue knees ๐Ÿคฃ Itโ€™s strange because I have no recollection of falling on my left knee and yet clearly I did!
