High on a hill was a lonely goat herd - until today that is; the stampede that was the Porirua Grand Traverse, sorted that lot out ๐ผ๐ถ A Porirua annual event consisting of several multiports, including the fun run/walk which I did. A warm, sunny Autumn day and for Wellington - rare, hardly any wind, so extra special. Our clocks went back an hour this morning, (summer officially over) but I'm still happy, a little extra lie in and more time to digest my porridge.
The run started at Titahi Bay beach, thank you lifesaving club for having opened your 2 Ladies toilets, as no portaloos ๐ฑ then a warm up, did it all, except for the star jumps c'mon really? and we were off over farmland, where I joined the queue clambering up the first bit to the cliff top, think what the trek from Everest base camp looks like not, as hilly obvs but all single file ๐ photo op at halfway aah! a breather it would have been rude not to take a piccie right? then onwards to the cliff top and then the summit at Mt Whitireia, (my Maori pronunciation not too flash but pronounced Fit i ray a) after that all downhill and then following the rocky coastal track around Porirua Harbour, which was looking very beautiful with jet skiers, kayakers enjoying the harbour everywhere today.
I mostly walked/jogged today as it was too hard to get past walkers (who were in the majority) but there was no rush and I took in the harbour views and the chats I had with people I passed or who passed me. It was just the most brilliant day. My Strava time said 1 hr 24, no idea what the official time is, results not in yet, but I don't really care. I had the most amazing time and surprised myself, even at my age, it's amazing what we're capable of and never think to give ourselves credit for isn't it?
I'm thinking now of those who are about to run soon today go! you're all incredible.

Thanks GTFC, just an amazing day, I was placed in the 40-99 age group, but thought I might pull out something special for the 100+ group, when I get to 101 watch this space ๐
Nothing like a bit of R&H to make a climb go with a swing. I was looking for some deep cultural significance around the event, but no, it is designed simply to be a really good advert for a beautiful area. Well, it does that job really well! I am sold anyway. You clearly had a great day and I suspect a long lay in will follow! So nice to hear from you again lexi6, drop in any time ๐
๐ Thank you Beachcomber66 I suspect on a wet, windy day it might not have had the same appeal, but it worked today. I haven't been on the forum for a long time, but have dropped by, oh okay then its called lurking, ๐ in my best Austrian accent "I'll be back'' you lot are really inspiring.
Fab photos - and yes, it does look busy but sounds wonderful too! Well done on your run - and yes, I also feel so grateful to be out there runningโฆlong may we all continue!๐๐โโ๏ธ๐๐ฝ๐โโ๏ธ๐๐พโโ๏ธ
Ahhh lexi6 what a star you are! It sounds like an amazing day and how wonderful that the weather (wind mostly) behaved for you. Really well done! โค๏ธ
Thanks cheekychipmunks it was just brilliant, back to earth this morning with an early breakfast with the dogs who haven't adjusted to daylight saving having just ended ๐
Hi Lexi, So pleased for you, what a brave adventure that was, out of your comfort zone but one for which you have been strength training, yoga-ing and running these past weeks!
Wellington may be usually windy, but it is certainly beautiful where you were, and it chose to be calm today for your event.
We were lucky that somehow the heavy rain 40mph winds forecast just didn't happen. It was windy but sunny and warm...I had too many layers.
Such great photos of your super challenge, sounds like you had an amazing day.
Thanks BBr, it was brilliant! I think the strength training I did really helped on the day, especially getting through the very steep bit right at the beginning it was nearly on hands and knees stuff ๐ boy was I pleased to get to the summit, but it was kind of Wellington/Porirua to put on such a beautiful day for us.
I was so happy that the rain didn't arrive for you. What an achievement to be able to run 10k without any training but especially running with friends ๐ช๐ฅฐ๐xxx
Thanks over61andstilltrying first time ever, ignorance is bliss! as they say ๐ but it was amazing and it was definitely a fun run/walk, would love to do it again.
Iโll be singing that tune all night now ๐ถ๐ต ๐ I quite like The Happy Wanderer as well โบ๏ธ Not to mention the Uist Tramping Song ๐โโ๏ธ
Well done on your amazing event! Looks really tough though ๐ช๐๐
Thanks misswobble sorry about the earworm though. Ha ha! they're great tunes those. It really was a fantastic experience, shared with I believe, over 400 other fun runner/walkers and I wondered why some people had brought walking poles! Soon found out ๐
Fantastic Lexi, well done. An amazing run and achievement on a beautiful day. It's a great advert for running and NZ and your level of fitness. (Love the title of the post too). Xx ๐ฅณ๐
Thanks Cantstopmenow it was a stunning day and really showed off Porirua's beautiful harbour and coastline plus I was extra happy not to get blown off the cliff, no climbing back from that! ๐
What an amazing sight that must be, and what an event! Well done you! You're very brave, but clearly that paid off in spades. Imagine that with a Wellington headwind to boot ๐
Hiya Linda, good to "see" you, it was just amazing, I did rather more walking than running but it was a beautiful day, so perfect without our usual Welly wind and the view from the top of that hill, spectacular. I hope you're doing OK?
