Bonjour VRBs, how are you all? It’s weekly chat time again, your opportunity to tell us about all the ups and downs and in-betweens of your running-related life over the past few days.
For me the highlight of the past week was undoubtedly meeting up with Sandie1961 🤗 As you can read here - healthunlocked.com/marathon... - it was so much fun. We chatted as though we’d known one another forever, walked parts of my running routes (the hills, the hills!) She and her husband met Jedi 🐶 (and my husband) and I also introduced her to the local speciality cheese 🧀 , complete with friendly mites!
The time absolutely flew by, and we’re hoping to be able to meet again - watch this space!
For now though, la rentrée has arrived – the holidays are officially over and it’s time to return to school, work, evening classes, sports clubs and other organized leisure activities, etc. This means a flurry of emails, deadlines, and frantic scheduling, as everyone competes for everyone’s time, energy and commitment. 📅
The weather, though, hasn’t got the message: the heat went away for a couple of days, but is now back so it continues to feel like summer, with temperatures well into the 30s. ☀️ Hardly conducive to a super-efficient rentrée, even though I've already managed to fill my diary for the coming weekend. 🙄
So what to do? Schedule like crazy, or just chill?
Answers below, please, plus as much other(vaguely) running-related gossip as you can manage!
I’ve been following UTMB as well RW. They are incredible runners! Have you watched Ben Parke’s training progress on YouTube? I don’t know what happened to him but he seems to have DNF’d again for the 2nd year on the trot. His girlfriend Sarah Place dropped out when he did last year but this year she completed it and I watched her come across the line - she was so elated at the end! I can’t imagine ever being able to run that distance at all, let alone along that terrain with that elevation!
I haven’t seen the Ben Parke’s training on UTMB. I was disappointed for him when he had to pull out of Comrades 😔 Good on Sarah though. That’s an epic run & worthy of much elation. I stand in awe of those ultra trail runners & those road marathon racers. Cheering you on TailChaser 😍
Thanks RW. I don’t know how they do it! I don’t think he’s a long distance runner, he should specialise in marathons, he’s amazingly good at those. I don’t think it will be doing his mental health any good at all 😢
My brother's been running 40 years. When I told him I'd registered for the Trail du Gévaudan this was his reaction: You most certainly are out of your tiny little mind!!! A full marathon with that elevation??!!
I decided to view it as an extra-long walk with a few big hills. So much easier.
Tbh I'd hoped to do a relatively easy 55km trail event not long after the Trail du Gévaudan, but we went away on holiday instead. And ever since weather and injury have been conspiring against me!
Though in fairness I don't care enough to put in the training just so I can wang on about having done an ultra race. If I ever get round to building up distance properly again, which isn't happening right now, I'll just go and run/walk up to a particular village and back, that should be far enough.
I've just skimmed one of his pre-UTMB 2022 videos where he says doctors said running was OK after what was apparently a bad ankle injury, but he should avoid elevation gain. Now, telling me that I'm incapable of doing something is more often than not a surefire way of getting me to do it, but even my pig-headedness has limits.
Having watched a tiny bit more and googled a bit about him, running ultra trails doesn't seem to be his forte. I'm delighted that this year his partner didn't sacrifice her own race again in order to bail him out.
As for the terrain and the elevation, it's well out of my league, but the advantage of mountain ultras is that you don't have to run like a loon all the time!
Oh that looks so beautiful RunWillie ! Is it warming up there now?
I'm struggling to chill, even though I've got a bit of a reprieve from back-to-school mode - my one remaining student hasn't got her timetable yet, so we won't be restarting until next week. I keep looking at my to-do list and wibbling!
Can't believe that Garmin thinks your usual weekly mileage is recovery. Twerp! (Watch, not you, obviously!)
We had some beautiful sunny days last week & now it’s raining & cold again. I’m not going back to tights so hopefully it warms up soon. Hope the return goes smoothly. x
the autumn schedule is filling up nicely with a 10k next weekend, a bit of touristing in September / October including Salamon Skyline in Scotland (I won't be running - just supporting others) and some cross country events are getting in the diary including the dreaded Temple Newsam Ten (aka "Tough Not Timid" ... hah! ... I'm timid not tough, no question, especially when it comes to the "puddle of doom") this 10 miler is in early January and a good post-Xmas focus. So looking forward to less heat and ambling about a bit.
Had a stupid heavy fall last week and bashed myself about a bit - need new glasses now but watch and phone survived which is lucky. And although one knee a still sore I can run well enough . Optician says I have catarats and need an op - she seems to regard it as straightforward enough - anyone have any experience of this operation (especially as it might relate to running)?
Happy running everyone and good luck to anyone running the GNR next Sunday (looks like it will be just as hot as last year).
I had both cataracts removed about 5 years ago (I was the youngest on the list by about 30 years!) and have never looked back. I had -8 eyesight previously and am now spectacle free because I have one eye for distance and one eye for reading. It is a very common, quick and painless procedure, 2 weeks recovery and you will have a new lease of life I promise!
Hi RunSkippyRun . I’ve had cataract surgery both eyes along with lots of other eye surgeries and can definitely say that it is a very quick and simple procedure. You’ll be up and running in no time 👍🏻
Sorry to hear about the fall RunSkippyRun - hope you recover fully soon. I won't risk running wearing my glasses as they're way too expensive, has to be my contact lenses instead.
You've done Temple Newsam before haven't you? Looks great, no need to go chasing a time, just have fun. Cooler weather and ambling are much more my thing than melting in the heat on roads where the heat's bouncing off!
Hello Cmoi , how lovely that you got to meet Mr and Mrs Sandie1961 . They are so easy to get along with and I’m sure your hubbies had plenty of things to chat about while you girls discussed running. 😂
Somehow this month and next has become quite busy. We did the Severn bridge 10k at the end of August, the New Forest 10k is the coming weekend and we are the lucky recipients of cheap entries in to the London Vitality 10k 2 weeks after that! 3 weeks later is the Great South Run 10 miles, so I also need to extend distance. So far so good, and if necessary I will use the London run as a training run rather than race pace, or drop it altogether.
Summer has also arrived here which makes it a bit tougher out there, but hydration hydration is the mantra.
We had a fab meet-up, though I have to say that Sandie1961 and I didn't actually talk that much about running!
You sound super-busy - good luck for the training and the races. I'd be completely stressed out by that schedule, especially when it's warm. I played on the forest trails to try to stay cooler this morning - it was 25° at 10am, and now, at 2pm, it's 39° in full sun. No matter how much water I drink l'm still not running in that!
I too have had the privilege of meeting up with Sandie and her OH. Delightful people, like all of the class of 2018. She made sure that I wasn’t overdressed for the GSR and supplied a sports drink to stop me dehydrating at the end of the race. Very kind to an old chap 🙂
I have read up on hunting/ shooting accidents by French hunters…..I read about 90 accidents one year with 9 fatalities. Keep your head down Cmoi!!
It is 24 degrees with clear blue skies here oop north ….it may even have warmed up since my last check. A slow 4K was all that I could manage this morning; I even traded my flat white for a chilled bottle of water. How I am supposed to build up fitness and jettison weight in these conditions I don’t know! Maybe I will melt. Swimming on Wednesday might help I guess. This all goes back weeks of hobbling around following my fall, the weird migraine thing which lasted for 5 weeks and then spending hours sitting on aeroplanes and trains clocking up 15000 miles….oh, and guzzling amazing food in Canada and Alaska. Note the absence of any meaningful running!
Maybe I need to set a target on here, such as loosing 2lbs per week for 4 weeks? If I have to report back, maybe I will get my backside in gear!
On your question; do what makes you happier; if doing nothing remotely work like would have you wracked with guilt, it won’t do you any good. Otherwise, a period of masterly inactivity might be just the thing 👍.
This weather is madness BC! It was 27ºC during our race on Sunday - no acclimatisation whatsoever and very pink shoulders by the end of it. Swimming sounds a very, very good idea, then you can be beautifully inactive!
I'm always curious about this "class of 2018" thing Beachcomber66 How did it come about, and does it apply to anyone who completed C25K in 2018? Or just a select few? I must admit I can't imagine ever describing myself as being part of the C25K "class of 2020." I can just about cope with my former school labelling me "class of 1979" but that's as far it goes. I'm a natural misfit! 😕
Hunting season starts this Sunday so I'll be running in hi-viz and fluo gear. I listen and look out for the hunters, and ask them too, when I see them. They're generally a responsible lot round here, and I have plenty of routes to choose from, though of course it's never zero risk.
It's brave of you to consider giving yourself a public weight loss target 😱 And as for absence of any meaningful running, I've had months of that, so can definitely empathise!
I was going to have a day off from the to-do list today, but guilt has prevailed. Ugh.
It isn’t a clique Cmois, nor even a closed group. I can’t remember who coined the title, it just came out of a few of us posting about our Bridge to 10k exploits, injury recoveries, ridiculous faux pas etc etc and then different people met up and friendships developed etc. There wasn’t a membership form, set of rules or oath of allegiance last time I looked ….I am a bit like Groucho Marks….I wouldn’t join any club which would accept me as a member!🙂
I had to take Mrs C for an early medical appointment this morning ; 8am! The outcome was good…so I found myself with a time gap. I usually swim at 10:30 on Wednesday mornings, but the overcast skies and hint of a cool breeze was irresistible…..the perfect time to fit in a 6k before the sun made running less pleasant. I just made it; the sun came through to warm up my cool down walk. No brownie today…weigh in later.
Thanks for the background to the "class of 2018" appellation. I have to admit that every time I see it I think of a very specific group of forum members and I'm never quite sure whether I've got that right or not.
Well done on your energetic morning, you put me to shame! I've been hiding away inside most of the day, either on HU or working my way down my Renaissance group to-do list. Though I did venture out to unearth a few potatoes, the first of this year's crop.
Hope the weigh-in was successful too. I'm trying to resist the siren call of the Ben and Jerrys Half-Baked in the freezer. As Hagrid almost said, "I shouldn't have bought that. I should not have bought that!"
Like the pizza I bought for tea! Will have salad with it though and my lunch was tiny. I went for an Americano coffee on my trip with Molly….I just need to get things going in the right direction. Sigh…….
I think ours are all Charlottes. My husband bought and planted them, I'm the one who goes out and grubs them up with her hands - they're in raised beds and very light soil!
I started some Charlottes off early doors in a tub in the greenhouse. I love them I like Arran Pilot too but I’ve got less space these days
I planted out tubers bought in town on our Annual Potato Day. A celebration of all-things potato 🥔 You can buy a single tuber if you wish, so you get to try out lesser-known varieties. Ditto garlic bulbs 😋.
I harvested the Charlottes before we went to France so they are in their lightproof hessian sack in the garage waiting to be eaten. Some of the PFAs are ever so funny shapes - thank goodness they don’t need peeling!
The Class of 2018! I guess we all just clicked and have stuck together ever since. If it wasn’t for a few of that graduation group I’m not sure I would have been tempted to run further that 5k. cheekychipmunks did the plan to 10k first then the three musketeers (Beachcomber66 , Sandie1961 and me followed in her wake). It was TailChaser who organised. Our first of many get togethers. It is not a clique but a group of people who would not have met without c25k and this forum.
Although our core is those who completed C25k in 2018, I would say we are also very accommodating because we have welcomed David_G Shake-and-run linda9389 Mudita11 SueAppleRun and countless others we have met during our various races, parkruns etc over the years since. Anywhere we are in the UK (and France and New Zealand etc) there is another HU graduate to meet for a run which is fab
That's lovely Sandie, I'd be class of 19 and only one of me, I don't know who else graduated in 19. so good to be part of this forum and meet up with VRB's. So I feel very welcome
Strange isn’t it Sue? I was a 2019 graduate too but I don’t recall many of the names now and don’t think many of them are still on the forum - we certainly didn’t keep in touch in the same way as ‘the class of’ has!
And a very welcoming group you are too! I don't really identify with the year I graduated from C25K, I have stronger memories of the group I was with when training for my first HM; there were a lot of shared experiences there 😊 (maybe I just have a rather short term memory 😍)
It's interesting that you say you probably wouldn't have run further than 5K were it not for that group. I only did C25K because a non-sporty friend from university had mentioned it, and I thought "if she can, I can!"
However since then I've taken the opposite approach and just run for me. I have no desire to follow in others' footsteps and while I loved meeting Sandie1961 ,the idea of group meet-ups totally intimidates me, however lovely the people are. 🤔
What I meant was, they gave me the encouragement and confidence to run further. I was still thinking that someone of my age might be pushing it to run longer than 5k. I do run for me but for me that includes the social side that running parkrun and races brings.
Whereas running for me is very much a self-directed, solitary activity! I would hate to have to be sociable when running, it's my selfish time when I don't have to worry about pleasing everybody else and fitting in. Or organising things, or competing and performing to order, come to that. I can just go and do what I feel like, which is so much fun!
Our weather has picked up again - poor kids going back in winter uniform today! So glad you had a good weekend with Sandie and Mr S.
I'm heading to the New Forest this week for my 10k event and to meet up with some VRBs (new faces and familiar ones). I won't be racing as I need my leg to hold out another 5 weeks for the GSR, but I'm hoping it will be a beautiful run with a lovely atmosphere.
Then I'm straight off to South Wales for a couple of weeks. Turns out the pub near our cottage has closed down which is something of a blow, but ... there is a parkrun just 10 minutes walk away!!!
We had such a great time with Sandie1961 and Mr S, so glad we finally managed to catch up. It's all very well being in the same country, but it's a loooong way between our respective homes!
Hope the New Forest 10k goes well - there's quite a HU collection doing those events isn't there? I know several people took part last year too.
Have fun in South Wales too, though the presence of a parkrun can hardly compensate for the loss of a pub, can it?! 😈 Will you be checking the property prices too? 😉🙃
Happy hoildays here in sunny South Wales linda9389 - these pubs are going like flies! we are holding on to our local but only just we feel. The other is up for sale .... boo. Enjoy the park run instead!!! I'll nosy on strava where to you are at. (me trying to do the welsh sounding talk.... I'm not Welsh but an imposter 😀)
Thanks CLR. The local parkrun is Brynaman (even though it's along the AmMan River, in the village of BrynaMan 😍). The loss of pubs and restaurants is too widespread isn't it. All we can do is to keep supporting these businesses ... I am actively doing my best 😍😍😍
I haven’t actually run for a week (Garmin says I am Detraining) but I have walked about 40km and clocked up around 750m of elevation gain, including a rather steep ex volcano, so haven’t exactly been slouching. The highlight of the week though was definitely spending time with you, hubby and Jedi and seeing where you do your running.
As for the coming week, back to the UK tomorrow, get sorted after 7 weeks away, plan the post French food and wine weight loss programme and start to get my a**e into gear to give me any chance of completing GSR, which is frighteningly close 😱
Bonjour ma belle ! Hope you found a lovely restaurant in Dijon and didn't have to survive on emergency rations, and that you got home safely and without delays.
What does Garmin know? Absolument rien de rien ! No chance of his congratulating you on your elevation gain as he doesn't do stairs or steps or vertical, they freak him out in the same way that nice flat tarmac roads do me. He'll just sigh and try to force you back into his straitjacket.
You'll be fine for the GSR, at least you've got a plan. I just have extra kilos and a melted running mojo, though the forest lured me in yesterday. Mr Garmin was so disgusted he wouldn't even connect to my phone. Now that he's deigned to recognise the run he's docked me two VO2Max points and added a year to my age. Tough, I had fun!
There were loads of restaurants open in Dijon and the place was absolutely buzzing / on a Monday 😳 We’d met up with friends from home on their way to the rugby and, of course, had to have boeuf a la facon bourguignon, which was absolutely delicious 😋 Report of nightmare journey home on Facebook, but currently sitting in the garden with a glass of Bergerac wine, having had a barbecue in the sunshine and listening to the Wednesday bikers speeding along the A46 😠 Intending to go for a run tomorrow when that lovely Mr Garmin will no doubt deem me to be Unproductive. Ah, c'est la vie! Bonne soirée xxx
Delighted Dijon was actually open 😜 but boo to nightmare journey home. I've been up to my eyeballs in Renaissance group stuff and Facebook was down when I tried yesterday so I'll have a look later.
I did a little over 8k this morning, 260m vertical, mostly tracks and trails. Mr Garmin failed to record the start of the run and then aged me by another four years. He's going to end up being left at home on the naughty step again.
Speaking of steps, this Harold's Planet cartoon reminded me of you in Le Puy! Click it for the caption and full effect!
Love that cartoon. Certainly resembles St Michel. I’m ashamed to say my last run was a week last Sunday, but I am going to Parkrun tomorrow, then back to Trotters on Monday. I have been doing heavyweight gardening after 2 months of neglect though!
That is very mean of Mr Garmin ☹️He has me as detraining as it only seems to recognise runs, but I still have my fitness age of 20 😂😂
I've gone from age 20 to 25 in a mere two runs. 12.25k and 421m elevation, mostly on tracks, trails, and logging paths full of debris. Can't imagine why Garmin doesn't appreciate it. 🤣🤣🤣
Bonjour Cmoi! Is it wrong to be very jealous of your meet-up with Sandie1961 , it looked a wonderful day in a glorious setting!
It seems strange as this is the first year since 2006 that we haven’t been tied to school terms. Youngest kitten is off to uni in a couple of weeks. The number of commitments has tailed off over the last few years but it’s still odd. I never, ever want to schedule like the past 17 years have made me do ever, ever again!
However, there’s a marathon to train for and the long runs are ramping up. 16 miles due on Friday (brought forward from Sunday due to family commitments) but I’m still recovering from the impromptu heat-fest that was Sunday’s HM. We have one more organised race before the big day but that’s not for 3 weeks.
I have a day off today in the hope that slobbing around for a bit will help. Just a 30 minute gentle trot on the agenda then I might go and have a touristy ice cream and a read of my book in the park 😊
We had a wonderful time TailChaser and your hugs reached me and were reciprocated!🤗
Not surprised you've more than had your fill of scheduling. I hope you enjoy having a slightly freer rein when it comes to commitments. Though running a bunch of races and then a marathon isn't exactly my idea of relaxation! That said, I'm not good at chilling out; I never feel I can justify taking time out when there's always stuff to be done. 🙄
Thanks Cmoi. I never normally have a day like this, I’ve done hardly anything today except my run, bought some lunch in town, sat and read my book, ate an ice cream then booked the cat in for a checkup. Now I’m sitting in bed again. Seems very odd really.
With marathon training and work and family, I think you totally earned a day off from doing stuff TailChaser . That's my problem, I never feel I've achieved enough to deserve taking a break. Am trying to reduce computer hours and stop falling down internet rabbit holes, especially in the evening, as too much screen time coupled with the hot weather is playing havoc with my already poor sleep.
Hi cmoi thank you for hosting the chat this week. I am going to be honest and tell you that I had to Google rentree. Never heard of that. Sounds like it’s much more of an event there than we have here where we all just drift back to school, work and reality. Nowadays, chill would be my preference though especially after last night’s training!
My running is going well, as you know, and I’m still trying to get my head round being a British champion. No let up in training though as I prepare for the European Championships. I leave on the 19th and the 100 heats are on the 21st. Being truly realistic I will have done very well to make the final. That’s my target anyway. For the 200 if I can make the semi final I will have also done very well. We have a fairly strong sprint team attending and there is a good chance of a medal in the 4x100 relay if we can get that baton round.
In the meantime I have a warmup race at the VAC championships in London this weekend and I’m also very achy this morning after a tough training session last night.
I wish everyone a smooth transition to work (if that’s something you must endure), and happy running wherever you are.
Congratulations again on your remarkable running RunBrianRun - Couch to British Champion is quite something! Wishing you loads of luck, too for the European Championships.
As for la rentrée, the first version of my post wanged on a lot more, then I edited it out! It's very much a thing here - not just kids going back to school, but a whole attitude. July and August = holidays, so nobody in public services, offices or manufacturing can really be expected to work, and sports and leisure groups don't meet. September = restart! People get back to work, politicians start spouting, TV and radio schedules change, books are published, and people are pretty much expected to choose and commit to their activities for the next school year. Even those who don't have kids or work in education!
So there's a mad rush to get stuff done, and any mention of going away in September or October tends to result in side-eyes. 😒
I quite like that. Couch to British Champion! There’s got to be a book in there somewhere 😂
Thank you for taking the time for that that explanation of rentree cmoi. Never though that going back to work and school would be a thing. For me it was always a feeling of dread and anxiety. Hated it.
Next time someone posts on the C25K forum worrying about being able to run 5K I think you should pop up to reassure them!
Paradoxically it's only really since last year that la rentrée has felt stressful. When I was working, especially teaching in schools and training centres, it was just normal, and at least I could say no to stuff on the grounds that I was already booked up elsewhere.
Now I have very few work commitments, so no excuse for not getting on with all the other things I need to do! 🙄
Interestingly we came across la Journee des Associations last weekend, when what seemed like literally every club in the area came together with stalls, information, demonstrations so that people could see what’s available now that the rentree has arrived. Great idea - everything from martial arts, running, walking, chess, music, dance, canoeing, rugby, you name it!
That's part of what's been taking up my time. The Renaissance choir, dance and music group of which I'm currently president has a stand at our local event tomorrow. I need to be there at 8.30hrs to set up, and probably staff the stand until at least 13.00hrs, though there will be other members there most of the time. Hoping I won't need to close down as well as that's not until 17.00hrs.
Then on Sunday I'm leading (allegedly) dance practice, after which I get to chair the committee meeting to get all our ducks in a row for the AGM (and of course dinner!) in late October.
I'm so glad you were around last weekend, not this!
I have absolutely loved my summer break but the lack of structure led to a lack of running 😏. I managed once a week most weeks but days out with friends and family, often with food, cake or ice cream came first 😊 Now I’m back at work my running schedule is back on track and the diet is back to being healthy. I think some ‘chill’ and some structure is a good combination although I’d prefer the structure without the work 😂
I’m retired and feel the need to get a schedule in place, especially as I haven’t run more than 10k since June and have Great South (10 miles) in just over a month 😬
But you kept some running going Frizzbomb67 , and enjoyed time with friends and family too. That sounds pretty good to me, especially since you say you're now back on track and eating well. I, in contrast, am neither structured nor chilled, just Mrs Melty Blobby. Bon courage for being back at work!
Relax is the best idea I feel.... It is even hot here at the moment and very stuffy in school (yuck) and I'm terrified of getting the lurgy interrupting my marathon training because I'm good at catching colds..... I'm constantly astounded by what my legs are doing and have had my race number which makes it very real .... and scary....
I can understand your not enjoying being back in school Cowladyrunning , hot stuffy classrooms are just horrible. Try not to worry about getting lurgied, though I know that's easier to say than do. If it happens, it happens.
In any case you're doing really well with the marathon training, and you're getting in elevation, which will be really helpful on the day. And remember, you're doing it for the scenery as well as the distance, aren't you? So take the time to enjoy it!
Well, we seem to have got some of your heat Cmoi although not as bad but I still don’t like it! I’m still not running because of my hip which is probably good timing with the temperatures and the only thing I’m doing in the garden is sowing seeds and pottering in the shade 😎
So, my approach is most definitely chill. Having said that I cleaned the whole house today rather than head outside 😇
The osteopath I saw on Monday advised me to do this exercise with my feet on a big ball and just relax for 30 minutes. I looked at her in horror! Do nothing for 30 minutes!!! Not sure I could do that. Maybe that needs to be something I work on….
Bad news on the hip IP 😧. I hope you’ll be back out there soon! 🏃♀️
I’ve not sowed any seeds yet. I’m waiting for cooler weather and some rain. I’ve cleared a space in the greenhouse, and prepped the soil ready for some salad leaves. They did well in there in spring in a used growbag 🙂. Made some space in the veg beds too for more stuff 🤗
I’m running in the day time, enjoying the sunshine while it lasts 😎🏃♀️
I've given up on chilling out tbh Irishprincess . Too much to organise and do this weekend for my Renaissance group, though I keep telling myself that once I've got through that I can give myself some time off.
Can totally empathise re the horror of doing nothing and relaxing for 30 minutes 😱 I'd be going through my to-do list, fidgeting and wanting to get up, with the feet probably falling off the big ball in the process. I'd need to read or listen to music, or both, at the very least. Hope you find a solution! xx
That’s exactly me too! I didn't sleep well last night because of the heat but rather than relax totally I re-organised a kitchen cupboard in my head and so I really need to do it in real life now 😇
I did six hours at the Fête des Associations today, mostly standing as I hate sitting down. Then hit Lidl's wine fair and bought several dozen bottles. Drove home and felt totally wiped out. (No, I hadn't opened the wine!)
I'd like to believe that means I'll sleep well tonight, but it's been over 40° this afternoon so will probably be over 25° in our bedroom again. That's despite opening all the windows as soon as the outside temperature drops below the inside one. Unfortunately that's quite often not until after 9pm!
Yikes! I hope you were able to get some sleep. That was a long day. If I had a day like that and had only one glass of wine I’d have to go to bed. I’m such a lightweight 🙂
We were a bit cooler and had a little rain, thank goodness. And I did clear out the food cupboard. There were so many out of date items that Mr IP had to do a rubbish tip run! The oldest was a packet of cornflour lurking in a corner from 2014 😱
Excellent work sorting out the food cupboard! Maybe I should send a search party into our fridge...
Weather's still stupid here, not now due to break until Tuesday evening. I spent this afternoon at Renaissance dance practice then committee meeting. Car sat for four and a half hours in full sun and was showing 46° when I got back in, though it'd dropped to 34° by the time I got home.
Not officially a heatwave here though, as it's dropping below 20° at night.
In fairness it's only hit that a couple of times, and only according to the thermometers on the car or in full sun in the garden. Realistically it's probably been in the mid-thirties.
We've had three months of heat and storm cycles, sometimes lasting several weeks, sometimes just a day. Suspect this is the future.
We are all so different; thank heaven! I have felt a bit at sea since we got home from Alaska. I am wondering what is next for me following the conclusion of the practical part of a two year episode. A period of masterly inactivity didn’t help. This morning, in desperation, I pressed the button on NRC 14 weeks to go; speed run (intervals). Only 27 minutes running time with 8x 60 second 5k pace intervals and a final 30 second dash. It was misty and cool; good for running and I ended up feeling so much better. One interval was at 5:28 pace ….which is whizzing along for me.
It doesn’t solve anything of course, but feeling better for a while is good. I guess I need, rather than like, some kind of structure. I will stick with the plan 👍
I'm sure having a proper training plan and structure would do me good in terms of getting me to run faster and back to longer distances in a sensible manner. Trouble is, I find that tends to drain all the joy out of my running! Worth it for something like the Trail du Gévaudan, but not on a regular basis.
5:28 pace is definitely in my whizzy category, and far too much like hard work for me. I'm lazy!
If I want pace numbers starting with anything below 6 I have to be on a flat or gentle downhill road with a reasonable surface, in the mood for speeding up, and fit enough to do so. None of that happens very often!
