Marathon long training runs and ...... blisters?

Is it normal to get blisters on feet just because of the mileage or are my new trainers not quite right for me? This is the third long run and have done other smaller runs but today after 18 miles I had 3 blisters 😱 I had applied Vaseline and was wearing my new nicely padded socks..... The reason I got new trainers was because my old ones gave me a blister and felt like they lost support on sole 🤷

It was a very hot day for a long run and I went very slow - there were also a lot of hills on my route! I was pleased to get to that number though 😊

where about on your feet are the blisters?

Cowladyrunning profile image
CowladyrunningMarathon in reply to Shake-and-run

One on the side of my big toe, another sort of on the side of the ball of my foot at base of big toe and one on the end of a smaller toe (which might be just my weird toes) The ball of my foot one was where I had a blister with my old trainers.

Sounds really uncomfortable. TailChaser has socks with individual toes, maybe they might help. I just get blisters if my feet sweaty, which doesn’t happen with running socks/shoes thankfully. Perhaps you just have delicate feet.

Yes I have toe socks but they're not as padded as other running socks!

Yep, I seem to remember it was Cowlady who recommended them. I don’t tend to wear padded socks anymore as my shoes are quite squishy most of the time anyway.

The only time I’ve ever had blisters from socks was during the London Marathon, at the end of a toe, so it could just be sweaty feet, mileage and time on feet. Maybe use some Vaseline or Bodyglide?

Maybe I need squishier shoes. Oh no, not more shoes sighs Cowman 🤣

I'm afraid I suffer with blisters as I up the mileage. I have tried all sorts of shoes (sizes and widths), different makes of anti blister socks, tapes (KT tape, leukotape) and blister pads (compeed). Nothing has worked for me yet. No problem until I hit the longer distances.

Ok thank you- I suspect I'll be the same as it's happened with two pairs. ...

It's a real pain and detracts from an otherwise pleasant run 😪

Frustrating isn't it!

I’ve not done bad lately 🙏. I went up a full shoe size. I wear Smartwool socks, do the Vaseline thing for longer runs, and wear the weatherised shoes if I’m likely to encounter wet conditions.

I’m about to buy some new shoes for the upcoming half😀👟

Typically I’ve got a toe nail coming off as if on cue 🙄

Oh dear - naughty toe nail! I'll take a look at those socks..... are they itchy wool or too smart for that?

I'm with TailChaser regarding toe socks, I've had Injinji socks since a guy posted about them years ago ,they fantastic and last really well too. Brilliant for avoiding blisters as I used to get them from the friction of toes rubbing against each other! ultramarathonrunningstore.c...

Yes I have toe socks for that reason..... but not found any that are equally padded in heel and big toe edge area!

Try injinji loghtweight trail are fairly thick but the ultra are much thicker on the toes and heel but you need enough room in your shoes. Your blisters sound awful, I hope you can sort it. I've been very lucky and not had any such issues but I do watch for any rub points. Injinji are fairly expensive but they last incredibly well and you can catch them in the sales.

I get a lot of blisters, at least I used to, now I either wear a thin pair of cotton socks or piece of tubi grip under my running socks, it seems to help. I do have psoriasis on my feet though so its not all running related, but the thin under layer is tight against my feet and if there is any movement its vetween socks.

Yes maybe I should double up- toe socks and ordinary run socks!

SueAppleRun profile image
SueAppleRun10 Miles in reply to Cowladyrunning

Toe socks should be enough with the lacing Cmoi below suggests, that lacing holds my feet more in place

I’ve got an outbreak of psoriasis at the moment 😏. I thought summer sun would keep it at bay but sadly not.

SueAppleRun profile image

Psoriasis is strange, sun is supposed to help, doesn't for me, I've been on holiday, sunbathed in socks and factor 50 and come back with swollen blistered feet,

I only wear Injinji toe socks & never had a blister but I’ve only gone to HM distance. Well done on your 18 miler. That is awesome & your new badge looks very good 😍

Ouch! I only get blisters if I do long runs in the rain if my feet get wet. It could be your toes rubbing against the shoes. Do you use the top 2 holes on your shoes? There is a special way of tying them that stops shoe slipping. Also, what's the fit like, are you toes touching the tip of the shoes, or is there space?

Cowladyrunning profile image
CowladyrunningMarathon in reply to Freecloud

Ok perhaps I'll try lacing differently - I have plenty of space in them as I had them from an actual shop 😊 so they were fitted properly I hope! Maybe too much space 🤷

I’m fortunate that I’ve never had blisters on my feet from running shoes, only from normal shoes. Compeed plasters are brilliant with dealing with them, but you will probably need to find out the cause. Good luck.

Thank you I haven't tried them.

They’re good for healing the blisters. they’re like a second skin and are ok to run in and even bathe.

Building up the glutes will help, I’m told by the running owner of my local run shop

Congratulations on your long run! I’ve never had blisters from running but have never run longer than a half marathon. I walked part of the Camino and blisters were a major topic among walkers. Some of the advice given was: Putting body glide, Nuk or vaseline on feet prior to the run and the heel lock method of tying shoes(mentioned above). There are also Wright double layer running socks which are supposed to prevent blisters. Injinji also makes thin toe liner socks which you can wear under other more padded running socks.

Hopefully, you’ll find a solution. Some people seem to be more susceptible to blisters than others.

Thank you - I may look at the liner socks. I did Vaseline them before but you're right I may just have fussy feet 🙄
