You can be as careful as possible when cross training. You may have not fallen in seven years. As stable as a tree. You may flow like water. And then somebody will hurl a frisbee towards you, the wind will lift it up and you’ll start fast pacing backwards, the wind will change the frisbee’s direction, you will quickly shift your weight, turn from you hips, expand your arms and reach out….
And then your running shoes, known for their trademark grip, will stubbornly refuse to move and will get stuck in one place of wet grass, superglued to the point that your legs will not move. Instead your body will, and you will form a plank in the air and hit the ground first with your elbow, then with both your knees and you’ll nail the whole sorry saga by thumping the grass with your forehead. In full public view.
I knew then l was in trouble. Too stiff just moments later and now, a few hours or so down the line, with ice on my knees, a blooded elbow and a scratch on my forehead, l know I’ll get some more discomfort. Very soon.
My wife’s often reiterated mantra ‘you cannot use those shoes on grass, you should take them off and go barefoot’ makes it even worse. She told me l fell as if l got shot. And l did. By my own stubborn stupidity. Live and learn, l guess. Again.

Sadly not. In this era of video surveillance my park seems to be exempt. They only seem to be interested in speed cameras, apparently. I will grow to believe that my fall was as gracious as the long jump of an antelope.
The left leg went into a wooden state and refuses to serve its purpose. It will heal, but my thought process, ability to learn from mistakes and listen to advice will need special attention.
…..of a trained athlete who flew through the air with power and skill, made the catch, got up and continued to run, shaking off a defender…..
I flew like a crash test dummy, landed by hurting most of my crucial parts, flapped my arms theatrically towards my wife who composed herself in order not to laugh. That’s not a great action shot. And I was wearing my full basketball gear to complete the farce.
You were out having fun, moving, throwing your body about! That’s better than the alternatives. When we don’t move we set like concrete, or maybe that’s just me 🤔☺️
I managed 15k the other day just by mowing the bleepin lawn! I resented each and every pass as it meant I wasn’t running. Lemme outta here 🤷♀️
I’ve not started the big lawn yet. My husband has left islands of weeds/wildflowers and they now need cutting. He leaves that to me with my cheapo Aldi mower that I can tip onto its back wheels and go forward chopping all before me 😁. When I’ve done the donkey work he will drive all over it with his ride-on It doesn’t hoover up the mowings so I get to finish it off 😤
I don’t particularly like lawns. I didn’t mind them when I had chickens on them though 🙂
Still, it means getting some steps in when not running 🙂
Every period of fun in my case ends up in tears. I was running daily, swam on holiday, running some more and then was catching frisbees - only to forget that my Asics have super grip on grass, they are road shoes. My ability to forget is now concerning. 🫢
My mistakes and mishaps have been well documented here over the years. I once even managed to get injured by taking the roast out of the oven!? And why on earth do l engage in martial arts, where runners tools of trade (feet, knees, hips, elbows) are in constant danger, only my maker can answer..
Love your great description of your crash to Earth. It was like I was there 😁
Sorry to be flip. I’m not really, and have every sympathy with your tumble. It’s so annoying that everyday activities can bring us down. I was talking to a runner once who slipped a disk picking up a fallen pear in his garden. Enough to drive you 😡
You were running to make a catch though so quite acceptable 😎
I hope you’re on the mend now and ready to get back out there 💪🏃♂️
It’s only day 2, the left knee is swollen a bit and I can’t bend the leg. I even feel my ribs but not sure if that’s related to martial arts. There will be a few weeks, l reckon, before l pirouette again. My wife wants me to partner her in badminton as well, so there will me more options for me to get battered. Then again, I’d go mental if l couldn’t go out.
She’s just returned to boast how brilliant it was, ‘a YouTube training material’ apparently. I think she cannot stand if I’m not moving around and neither can l. Yeah, knees are there to be used, abused, fixed and reused. 😉
I had a knee last year that saw me in physio ☹️ Thankfully she said exercise would cure it, and to never stop moving. Music to my ears 😁
I got a painful Achilles now, but at our age we’re always going to have something making it’s presence felt. I’m ignoring it hoping new shoes will cure it. I fear it might need two pairs 😎😉
It’s about ‘use it or lose it’. Once you stop using your muscles after certain age, they won’t keep active by themselves and…..and then that’s it. Hence you’ve got to keep moving! 🏃♂️👊👊👊
