So, Friday night, was the famous (well its famous in Lincolnshire because of the cakes at the end!) 10km cake run. This time last year was the first time Id done this event and my first 10km race for about 15 years, so it was kind of an anniversary. Some of you may have read my race report from last Sunday, where I had a really awful run, for lots of reasons, so Friday all day, I was trying to get into a more positive frame of mind as well as focusing well on hydration and food. I did not want a repeat of last weekend when half way round, I desperately needed the toilet!
It was very very warm Friday and even though it cooled down a bit, at the start of the race it was 25 degrees π.
So my strategy was to enjoy the race, take in the beautiful countryside views , not get het up about my time and try and relax. Myself and another running buddy started right at the very back and figured that it didn't really matter back as clearly the timing starts when you get over the timing map. However, this strategy probably wasn't the best, as then I got a bit stuck in the bottleneck and couldn't get round many people for about the first 15 minutes of the run. I had no choice but to take it steady. 1km in, felt ok, legs didn't feel like lead like the previous weekend, 2nd km, its getting hot but its ok and not panicking me and my stomach feels absolutely fine. before I know it its 3km and there's an incline coming, so I calmly remember my hill training, small steps, control my breathing and don't panic! Half way, I calmly tell the runner next to me, hey' we're half way already!' I get a kind of grunt back and a half smile and I dig in, looking around, taking it all in.
I have to say I know I was going at a much slower pace, but I really didn't want to get too hung up about it. Get to 8km and I am starting to feel very hot and quite tired, but I keep digging in and remind my self of how I will feel when I finish and am eating that scummy cake!! ππ
The last 1km of this race is a bit of a killer, as you think you're coming round the corner to the finish , and then realise there's actually another incline before you get there. Its misleading as a lot of the villagers come out to cheer many shouting 'not far, you're almost there!' which makes you think you're closer to the finish line than you actually are!!
Anyway, I finish with a time of 56:53, which ironically is slower than my awful run last Sunday, but...... the difference is although I was still very tired, I felt much better and think I enjoyed it, whereas last Sunday was just awful! Picture is me grinning as its finished and I can now eat cakes!!!π€£π°π°π°

Absolutely, I managed to get my head in the right place and think I enjoyed it, rather than focus on what the time was. The cakes were just delicious and all home baked!!βΊοΈπ°π°. I'm still struggling energy wise and still slower than I was a year ago, but I've still got niggles that need sorting and maybe it's a lesson in teaching me it's not all about PBs. Back to basics I think and remembering why I enjoy running.π₯΄
Oh comparison really is the thief of joy isn't it? I'm 67 and am noticing when I run with my neighbour it wears me out so I drop back and plod on, she's exactly half my age.
Felt so much better thank you, I think I'd let the gremlins of doubt into my mind last week. Still got things to sort out, injury wise but also need to stop worrying about people saying ' oh you're usually quite fast but I'm now beating you' and just enjoy my running again.
Hey, many of us are still dreaming of a sub 60 10k π Really well done π I must do that one if Iβm in the UK one year! The cakes look yummy π
Thank you, a lot slower actually than I can do it normally, but trying not to fixated on time at the moment and focus more on being more comfortable and in less pain! π΅βπ«
Thank you, but I couldn't do what you do! Have to say the cakes were delicious and for some reason, everyone was smiling at the end !! πππ°π°
Great news that this one went well. I would say it went really well looking at your time π
Iβve run a couple of races in the evening and I find it tricky to know what/when to eat and drink. And it can be quite hot too as the day has heated up.
Well done on a great run and that cake looks delicious π
Congratulations on yet another sub-60 10K and most excellent cakery Hedgehogs123 ! I know you've already entered a bunch of other events but will you please rest up a bit now?!
Yep the cake was delicious!! Yes Ive been having the conversation with a running buddywhose been injured for a while and is really taking it easy, about not over doing it and not getting concerned with some of my running club buddies who just lately have to race every time we go out. I have 2 events in Sept, one is a trail run through the grounds of Sandringham, I may have missed the call for Sept events? The other is the London Vitality 10km which I'm doing virtually so not as much pressure. Then maybe one in Oct. You'd be pleased to hear that I ran a really steady parkrun yesterday, 29mins , I knew my legs were tired from the night before, so I just treated it as a nice early Saturday morning run, no pressure. Had a couple of people pass me and comment ' blimey You're having a steady one! ' to which I said ' yes I certainly am, I'm just enjoying it.' I didn't even look at my Parkrun time when it came through, and that's unusual for me.
By the way, I've had 2 Theraplate treatments, so after my 3rd this week, I thought I'd do a write up, as others may be interested. Hope you're well?
I made carrot cake this afternoon Β Hedgehogs123 on the basis that it almost qualifies as healthy, especially since I omitted any icing!
Don't worry, you've not missed the September events post, we don't usually put them up until at least midway through the preceding month so it'll arrive soon.
I'm OK, thanks, just not coping with the heat. I know it must be infuriating for everyone who's desperate for a bit of sunshine, but it's been so hot here that I've ended up staying inside. Did a short pootle with the dog this morning before it got crazy warm, only around 26Β° when we got back. Hit over 40Β° again this afternoon in our garden, but it rained this evening so it's a mere 18Β° now at 11pm.
Would be really interesting to hear about your Theraplate experience, so yes, please do a write-up for us all.
Congratulations Hedgehogs123 ππββοΈπ₯³π₯³π! An amazing time and a brilliant race. Your race report reminded myself of my race in May and how it was hot for me too and yes how you do think when people clap and tell you your nearly there .. you actually areβ¦β¦.but your not quite there and it can be a wee bit disheartening ππI wish Iβd had your mind set on that day. Your report was fab and you are just amazing ! Well done you and your cakes look scrummy and yummy ππ. Brilliant!ππππ
Aww thank you, just so relieved it was better than last Sunday which was awful and I just wanted it to be over! The choice of cakes was amazing, so many sizes and flavours, hard to choose!!
