Having followed the NRC HM plan closely (apart from the 3 or 4 very long runs I intend to go back for and tick off) I wanted something different to long, easy runs, or speed runs. so, today I decided to do the 5K Race with coach Bennet.
What fun! I thoroughly enjoyed running a bit faster for a longer time, and pacing myself..and I'm delighted with my time of 40:10 mins. I know this is not fast for some people here, but my running went out the window after my thyroid cancer surgery last year, and I couldn't run a straight 5K for some months and then when I could I could barely break 53 minutes.
I had breast cancer before the thyroid cancer, that rather slowed me down too, and to be honest I wasn't really much faster than this before either illness, so I am dead chuffed with this today.
Splits were 8:08, 8:04, 8:01, 8:08, 7:49. I reckon I've got a bit more in me too...

I try not to dwell too much on the past, not only did I have some debilitating treatment, I'm 5 years older! Still, I'm floating around at the moment, never thought I'd see times like this again.
👏👏👏👏👏 That's awesome and you so deserve credit for this. I totally resonate with you grasping a shorter and speedier one. After consecutive long run training blocks I've started to really enjoy 5k runs and this distance was something I never really ran before.
It's good to mix things up, I enjoyed this one. I tend to prefer the shorter runs, if I'm not following a plan and pushing myself, I'll do 4 - 8K every time.
That's wonderful, I never thought to do that run, thought it was for when entering a race, I can't wait to try it now so thank you. My fastest 5k was 40:44 so you beat me, and that was July 2020. I seem to have got progressively slower.
I didn't know you could wear ear buds at parkrun, I will try that one next time I run at the river. Sometimes looking back isn't as helpful as we'd like it to be, I get down because I'm slow at times
You can wear earbuds at Parkrun normally, but I wear bone conducting Aftershokz anyway, you can use those at most runs because they leave your ears open.
I get down too, I used to be a lot faster, but I just remember how fortunate I am that I'm still here, and anyway - I dislike the word slow. We are not slow, we do what we do, and we do it well...and we see more than runners who race along, and miss the scenery and the view...
