After 4 weeks of injury, then illness…… and, critically, no running for 4 whole weeks….. I finally laced up my trainers and hit the road last night. I tried to get out first thing yesterday morning, but I still had that persistent light sensitivity/ migraine issue when I stepped into the garden for a trial sortie into the great outdoors, so I abandoned that attempt, and took Molly to the cafe instead….walking was at least possible, but I hid from the sun.
Yesterday afternoon, after winning the test match (oops, sorry RunWillie ) I felt a bit better and decided that the time had come. So, running shoes on and out of the door, just see what (if anything) was possible.
In itself the run was unremarkable; I stuck to my target of an easy 3k. My first 1k was really slow because I needed to check out my balance, the second was quicker and I slackened off for the third lap. Overall pace was 7:33, which is about my easy pace, as planned. I felt really good after finishing and I woke up this morning feeling the same way. Now, I don’t know whether this battle is over, but at least I do know that my legs still work and that my knee didn’t suffer any structural damage in my fall. So I have a foot on the first rung of the comeback ladder and 🤞🤞🤞🤞this continues to head in the right direction. 🙂

The best news BC. I was thinking about you and hoping that all was well. I know you’re still being cautious, but it looks like the early signs are good. 🙏
Enjoy your gentle runs for now. And enjoy your trips with Molly to the cafe! 😀 🐶
Excellent RW! It is a wonderful series even though we are behind. Test cricket has learned that it has to be exciting and entertaining. Hope your running is going well🙂
That is so good to hear Beachcomber66 . The last 4 weeks must have been a bit scarey for you, and I’m sorry it happened during your holiday. You are doing the right thing, one step at a time.
Thanks Dexy5. The last two weeks with the migraine have been the really scary bit. I decided not to drive until it cleared. Loss of independence is a big deal. I feel pretty normal (for me 😉) this morning so maybe I have turned a corner.
I might have a trip to the opticians. My current glasses/ sun glasses are only a year old, but worth ruling it out properly as a potential issue.
I had what is known as a silent migraine for the first time last year, where you get strange flashing pattern or scintillation, but no headache. It was over within an hour. I got an emergency appointment with the optician, who knew what it was straight away, when I drew a picture of what it was like. I had a brief spell last week it’s but not so worrying when you know what it is. To have it for longer definitely needs checking out. Good luck.
Thank you so much Dexy5. Awful isn’t it! I have had these headache-less migraines for years, but they were much more prevalent when I was working. I also used to get hemiplegic ones, which mimic strokes. I will get the optician to test it out. I feel great today, for the first time in two weeks, so hopefully it is on the way out. Mrs BC has offered to transfer to me her optician’s appoint for tomorrow. ❤️
That sounds very promising BC. As you say, it’s a start on the first rung and definitely reassuring that you had no cause for concern this morning 👍
My husband once took me to Lords and tried to explain to me the rules of cricket. It was a beautiful day and we did have a nice lunch but, unfortunately, that’s about all I can remember 😂
Fingers crossed for your continued ascent on that ladder 🤞
Thanks IP. As a lad growing up in Yorkshire cricket was just something I absorbed by osmosis. If you are not confused by the rules, you don’t really understand them! 🤔
Not to any level. As a kid I was always playing cricket on a large playing field which was 5 minutes from home. I learned how to make the ball swing both ways and spin, and had a pretty good “eye” for batting. I played for a work team for a couple of years but that was it. An enthusiastic all rounder , i.e. not particularly good at anything 😂
woo hoo! Glad to hear you are back….. and running at a speed that I would be delighted with! Just shows how everything is relative. I’ve made a mental note that I can only run with you when you are coming back from the IB and only in the first one or two runs. Really glad to hear you are back out there and looking forward to further updates. 😃😃 ‘Things won are done, joy’s soul lies in the doing’ (Troilus and Cressida 1:2)
🙂 thanks Shakes. Yesterday was an important run….the most important one is always the one I am running, and once it is over the next run becomes the most important….which is, I think, close to where the Bard was going with that one. 🙂
Captain Sensible strikes again. Well done BC. You are becoming the expert at comebacks aren’t you? 😂 So pleased to hear you are feeling well enough to lace up the running shoes again and 🤞🏻it continues.
Good to hear, awful isnt it when you first come back, bound to be a bit nervous, but sounds like you had had a nice run and with no bad effects the next day is definately a bonus!
Thanks Hedgehogs. Planning to have another short run tomorrow. This is the first running fall I have had; it has certainly made me think. My bone density was measured 6 years ago following a fall on black ice; the reading was good…I hope that is still the case. Given that no bones were broken this time, I will take that as a positive! All systems seemed to be working normally today, so here’s hoping 🤞
Hi aliboo, thanks. I see that you have had your own encounter with hospital. How unlucky to be bitten by a horsefly which doesn’t floss properly! I hope that your recovery continues apace. Just shows how we are all only one false step or insect bite away from IC…..had our share for now thanks. 🙂
Great to hear you’re back out there Beachcomber66 - taking it easy is very wise and of course the best way back! Enjoy - and here’s to the many more runs ahead!🙂
Thanks Sandra. A 4 week break from running is new territory, so caution is essential. I got a bit of clue yesterday. I sat down at 2pm, feeling grotty….and woke up 2 hours later ready to run. So I am now making sure that I get enough sleep! I will get there.
5k completed. Pretty slow…I almost gave up after 200 metres, I felt so grotty, but stuck with it. I feel great now….don’t know what is going on, but glad to be running whilst I work it out. Optician tomorrow.
Progress in the 'you are running again' direction, sounds good to me. Very pleased for you, I expect 4 weeks seemed long, too long. I expect that much listening to your body required, although I notice you carried on while feeling grotty. I suppose that there are lots of different ways to feel grotty! One day at a time, one run at a time. Here's to more progress in the fit and healthy direction. 🏃🏻♂️😊
Thank you >61. My head seems to clear sufficiently as I run. Last night I had a nice evening afterwards. Glare is definitely an issue, which is why I am running in the early evening …see what the optician says today. My worry is that this proves to be chronic rather than acute. 😕
