I was all set for a speed run this morning; only 3 long runs away from HM. I don’t usually run on Fridays but my Thursday run had to be postponed because of a friend’s funeral. She was a lovely gracious human dynamo of a lady from church who won the Queen’s Award for volunteering. She didn’t run, but she was definitely the fastest walker I have ever seen!
Over the last day or two, my throat has been a bit rough, my temperature is up a little bit (but still within the bounds of “normal”) and I have a nose which keeps getting blocked. A sneezing fit last night convinced me that this was hay fever; I get it every year and I don’t let it stop me doing anything. Mrs BC has had similar and tested negative for Covid 19. However, Mr Thorough thought that a pre run covid test pre run this morning was probably the right thing to do, just to be absolutely certain. We had one kit left in the cupboard from a store I bought months ago.
Guess what…….positive!😱
In the great scheme of things , this doesn’t really register as an issue, but really ? now? after all that work? Sulking in my porridge….
Gah!

Thanks CC. I will ask Mrs BC to get some more tests today. The covid equivalent of demanding a recount. In theory I could go up into the woods and run; there is plenty of room up there. But probably best to let my body get on top of the bug first. My peak flow was down a touch this morning. I could fix that temporarily with my inhaler, but it is another sign that my system is fighting something.
Putting the kettle on!
Molly is having a post breakfast nap; that dog knows a thing or two about going with the flow 🙂
Thanks IP. The variant which is going around seems to be pretty short lived. I can always do a spot of work with weights I guess. Then again, lugging around these chips on both shoulders might be enough!! 🙄
A friend of ours returned from Germany last week and then went down with Covid a few days later. She’d never had it before and she felt so rough she went to bed for a few days! Needless to say, her husband has now got it too ☹️
I would gently suggest that you don’t do the weights. It’s still putting the body under a pressure it doesn't need. Just focus on taking it easy and lounge on the sofa with Molly 😍
I suspect that a period of masterly inactivity is probably right! The annoying thing is that Mrs BC had similar symptoms last week and tested negative throughout. Still, she will be fit to get some food in and mop my (barely) fevered brow ( 😂).
Oooh nooo BC 😩. So sorry to hear this. Having had all the vax, I hope you won’t suffer too badly, but it’s the inconvenience of it all that’s the main pain. Doesn’t 🦠 know that you are building up to your HM?
Give it time seems to be the best advice with this blighter. I hope Mrs BC continues to remain negative.
Can you send Molly to your cafe to collect take outs?
Thanks Dexy5. She would eat them on the way home or spend all the cash on sausages and eat in the cafe with her adoring fans 🙂. I suspect that she could find her way there and back on her own by now.
After the initial rage dissipates, I will focus on getting better asap and picking things up from there. Hopefully this will clear up more quickly than the mid Feb non covid virus through which I lost 5 weeks of progress on the plan. 🤷♂️
It does. I cope with injury pretty well, once I have a diagnosis and a recovery plan. Something to work on. But illnesses have minds of their own; the best I can do is not do stuff which will make it worse. Time for more tea…..
Every running plan is a race against time to complete it before some lurgy on injury strikes. Just letting off steam really. I know that I just have to get on with it.😬
I will definitely do that Comte, thanks. If it is positive again, I will re test in about 4 days (ever the optimist). I still struggle with the concept of a positive test result showing that I am ill!
I hope the wheels are refitted and you are fit and well soon SM; hearts are not to be messed with!
I should be used to snake sliding; but sometimes the board seems to be all snakes and no ladders! No point in whining; I need to get grip and get on with it. Good excuse to catch up with a bit of sport on TV!
Thanks Sandra. So much for the idea of doing some other exercises; I keep falling asleep! I had an idea of capturing “lessons learned” on NRC HM. Maybe tomorrow……🙂
Oh no, what a bummer. Hope you’re testing negative again soon and that it doesn’t affect your running too much. Six of our choir members were absent due to it tonight, so it’s still flowing freely!
Thanks Sandie. Early night I think and plenty of paracetamol. We don’t know which of us caught it first! Molly is looking bemused; the cafe will have a cash flow problem!
Thanks Linda. We both felt a bit rough last night; temperature, grotty lungs (sorry!) and heart thumping away in the ear which was in contact with the pillow. Like flu.
However, I awoke out of a peaceful sleep and feel a lot better now. Same pattern as last time. Awful the first night then quick recovery….except it took 10 days to test negative! Porridge now, then crash out again! Have a great time…and run.🙂
Thanks aliboo. Lots of friends have been in touch to ask if there is anything we need; to which the current answer is that we are well stocked. My little sister (only 66) lives about 20 minutes away; she keeps pestering me to take paracetamol! I dread the WhatsApp ping!
Hi RW. Thank you so much. All of our friends from church have been in touch. We need never be short of help. Amazing people. Hopefully last night was the worst night. Hope your runs go really well.🙂
Thanks Kat. Maybe it is an age thing. At 71 it is hard to stay fit and well for 14 weeks at a stretch, especially in a pandemic. We came out of it quite well last time so 🤞🤞🤞🤞🤞
Thanks OMR. If it follows the pattern of last year, last night will be the worst, tonight might be a bit grotty, and then it is just a question of waiting for a negative test. The whole thing took 10 days; maybe my system is a bit fitter this time!🤞
Oh no, bad timing, I'm sorry about that and your friend, she sounded like a great lady. I helped a fellow runner after a race last year when he collapsed and lost control running over the finish line last year. He went headfirst into the barriers and another runner and myself helped him up and moved him.
I got covid from him and had to cancel a holiday with my wife as a result 😭, it was also too late to cancel so we lost the money and missed a local 10 miler that I signed up for.
I was lucky the variant was a mild one but I still had to isolate for 5 days because I feared for my wife as she had certain health issues.
I was so worried about my running and started going out early in the morning after the 5th day. I didn't see anyone (it's quiet here and hardly see anyone anyway) so couldn't pass u it on.
I felt a bit groggy and stuff and did a very slow 2k and continued every day afterwards gradually getting stronger. So hopefully your variant won't set you back too much.
Thanks Freecloud. I think the football cliche “one day (game) at a time” applies. You clearly need to be extra careful, but maybe being out of the house a bit early is the best protection for your wife. Hope you stay fit and healthy.
Thanks Beachcomber66. She's fantastic. She works in a day care center looking after people with special needs. She was very fearful of going in because most of them couldn't comprehend it all. However, she persisted and never missed a day because she has a lot of car and affection for her guys and what she does. She was (is) like everyone else who put others first fantastic people.
Arrrgh! Test again, you never know (the call of the desperate 😩)If still positive, put plan B into place - lying on the couch and having everything carried to you. I hear chocolate is a good recovery medicine 😉😉
Mrs BC tested yesterday, a bit later in the day; she is positive, and my symptoms are very similar to my last bout of covid….so there is no escape I am afraid.
Oh that's rubbish. 😰 There's such a lot around now.... my colleague has been rough all week so I'm just waiting for the next attack.... I really hope your covid is the 'I didn't have any symptoms " type and you can be back out again soon. Sending vitamin c vibes out fast....... hope that helps 🤣
Sorry about your friend too she sounds a very special person.
Oh no 🙈 poor you BC. That’s rotten luck just as you were getting to the end of the HM training. I know if it was me, I’d be really tempted to go out be try a run but it’s absolutely not what your body needs right now. I hope it clears off quickly and you return swiftly to your training plan. 👍
Thanks RBR. I did have a notion that a run was possible yesterday morning, but the symptoms got worse as the day went on. No short cuts I am afraid. I have asthma on top of covid, so not a good idea to try any heroics!
Feeling your pain! Hope you recover quickly and your energy returns. The timing so unfortunate. I slept for a bit 10 days when I had it and apart from "the aches" didn't really feel that ill. But my energy levels are only just returning to anything approach normal now -4 weeks after that first positive test.
Such a bizarre experience but so thankful for those vaccines!
Thank you. I go through the railing and gnashing of teeth quite quickly, and then switch to planning my recovery. Just at the moment; sleep is needed!!
