My Brighton marathon

This year has been a real struggle for me to get ready for this years Brighton Marathon, my long run training was interrupted by family, snow, illness and more snow. I was getting out every other week which maybe was not good enough and when I did get out I had little motivation for to be out in the cold for that long! The whole thing put me right off running!

But this year I knew a few people doing it and travelled down with a friend to the always excellent park and ride. My friend I have known for a long me when we would spend all night in a pub and any suggestion for running was to catch last orders! He started about 6 months after me and I had always been faster than him, until the last 6months when he had broken all my records apart from the marathon time! He came close the previous weekend when he did 4hrs 28mins (1minute slow then mine) in Paris oh and yes he was doing two back to back marathons!

So the reason I tell you this is that it actually gave me something to aim for and this gave me the motivation to beat him. So we had a chat both actually wanted to run at the same pace for as long as we could 6/km (4hr 13min predicted finish time).

Anyway we got to Preston park and the park was filled with people, and had no chance of meeting the other club members so we prepared and toliet breaks, i went to check out the AMEX bit for amex customers which served me coffee and water and an easy big drop. The line for the toliets was still big but not as big as outside of the AMEX bit!

Anyway we got in our starting pens and were ready to go, only i needed one more wee! (free water in the amex bit I am blaming) Lucky enough on the walk down to the start line there was some urinals and grabbed one last toilet break.

So we were off up the hill and down again, although the route seems to have changed since I last did it but wasn't really sure how. But as we ran around the city a bit with great crowds and everyone cheering people on. I was great to get cheered on by other Kent running clubs as well my own Maidstone Harriers club.

But down into Rotterdean and both keeping to our pace and both feeling good even though this is the really hilly section (not that bad)the crowds thin out to and from Rottingdean but nice support in the village. Then its back up to city center, and along to Hove and down Kingsway which always has great support loads crowds and parties, but it just seems to go on forever and ever and have to know you get to the end and run all the way back again. It was here a 29km I start to feel my pace go a bit and got held up at the water stations. My friend just kept running and I tried to catch him up but I had nothing in my legs, then 30km my legs were destroyed and could hardly run! I slowed my pace but my legs were saying no, and from then on I never saw my friend again (until after) and rest of the 12km was hell and was very much a run walk. Going through the industrial zone I had very little motivation to run at all such is the bleakness of this section.

It was then back along the promenade where the crowds pick up cheering and motivating all the runners who are all in pain at this point. When you see the 2mile sign my thoughts where I have to get under 5hrs and whats 2 miles I can do that in my sleep! just not when I had already done 24 of them! I started to actually have little tears that my body was so rubbish at running and wasn't doing as i asked.

It was at this point a nice lady from Medway Rebel runners ran up to me said come we can do this together and we pulled each along for the last bit and was thankful as we finished.

I got the bling and the bottle of water and of course, the beer which they were also serving, when i say beer it was alcohol-free beer, but I still downed it in one. I quickly got my bag and got my warm clothes on.

I met my friend who had a big smile (3hrs 17minutes) and we told of our joys and heartache.

The good :

It was great atmosphere and support from other running clubs.

They had beer at the end!

I made it (4hrs 58mins)

The bad :

Not sure i ever want to to do a marathon again.

It hurt from 30km onwards.

The beer was alchohol free.

My left foot still hurts, its never hurt before!

and roseabi never slowed down for me so we could play ps4 vr half way!

Rant :

the t-shirt dont get me started on the bloody competitor t-shirt, who wants a competitor t-shirt not me! I want a finisher t-shirt. If i dont finish it then i dont want t-shirt to remind of oh that was the marathon that i couldn't finish! then don't sell them for £35 for a finisher t-shirt from the official shop. Just give me finisher t-shirt or dont bother.

I'm so sorry I missed you, I kept looking for you and stepped in a pothole at one point because I was too busy looking around, and we had ordered Resident Evil especially to cheer you up :D

Sorry to see that you struggled at the end, I did too - Mordor was tough, but for me the killer was that last couple of miles along the prom, where people keep chirping "nearly there now!"...

Bloody well done!!!!!!

I did look for you too! we should have worn a red rose or something! but it was very crowded we couldn't find others and we had arranged a meeting point! and be careful about standing in a pothole looking for me you could have twisted your ankle!

Well done to you too, and look forward to your run report as well! (detention if you don't)

Well done Ben. A marathon is a massive acheivement, no matter the time. The medal will last long after the aches have subsided.

omg no i couldn't think of anything worse oh the boredom of training for that long! Sprint tri's and halfs for the rest of the year and next year Olympic distance and depending on how well my swimming goes a half IM.

Thats the main reason I don't fancy a marathon TBH. I found the half long enough. I enjoy running but its a lot to keep your mind focused for so long.

benwill profile image
benwillMarathon in reply to Whatsapp

I think a half marathon is a great distance and marathons are hard dont ever think you have to because its the next thing people do after a half.

Thanks Ben. If I did, it would not be for a few years yet at least, and definitely planned as a one-off

Of course just the once we all say that. 😐 But 3 is enough for me

Shhh.....I am an injured retired marathoner!

roseabi profile image

It was a cynical t-shirt selling ploy for sure!

benwill profile image
benwillMarathon in reply to roseabi

Cynical it was like they were trying to rob people, i am not even sure if they wanted people to wear them during the event, which would be stupid as they recommended themselves nothing new on race day!

Can’t imagine how tough that must have been in those last stages Ben, but massive respect for pulling through to finish. Alcohol free beer? Really? I suspect you may want to do at least one more marathon to finish on a positive note (says the guy yet to run anything close to a marathon)

benwill profile image
benwillMarathon in reply to Decker

Yea it was tough and marathon's do make you tougher.

I suspect I dont want to ever do a marathon ever again, well apart from the marathon my friends are talking about in Istanbul next year that sounds fun, but never again! retired!

I hear you. I have no aspirations to do a marathon for just these reasons. An HM is more than enough challenge for the time being. Have a shorter trail run booked later in the summer. Never tried trails before.

benwill profile image
benwillMarathon in reply to Decker

Trail races are great a different atmosphere to a road race as you don't get as many supporters. I did my first half and marathon trail races last year and loved both of them. (apart from when I got injured) but be sure to train on trails and do hills training.

Decker profile image
DeckerUltramarathon in reply to benwill

That is ok - I tend to like the quieter races anyway. My first trail is just a 10k with no real challenging trails - also may join a trail drop in group on Saturdays here in Toronto. First need to get this HM out of the way!

What a great and very honest run report - but huge congratulations for having the grit to get yourself to the finish line when it felt so tough! Both you and roseabi are so inspiring. I know I have another HM in me somewhere but a marathon?? Different league! Thank you for sharing....and I bet once you're rested up and the memories of pain fade😱, you will be tempted all over again! Well done!🙂🏃🏽‍♀️🏅

benwill profile image
benwillMarathon in reply to Sandraj39

Not sure inspiring is the right word for me! i found the training really hard, i didn't have much belief in myself (why i didn't post much on here), started to hate running! But feel much happier now i have done it I will have a bit of a break. Until i need to starting for Leeds castle Triathlon!

Sandraj39 profile image
Sandraj39Half Marathon in reply to benwill

Ah, but those are all the reasons I have never signed up for a marathon - scared about how hard the training will be, falling out of love with running and of course, the pain!! You felt all this but did it anyway!! So, I stand by 'inspiring'! ...enjoy your rest and shorter runs now, though!🙂

Thank you! it was naff about the t-shirts but oh well I got a nice medal. Future distances are a quick 2k around to Morrisons for lunch!

anyone can run it just need the patience of doing the training, maybe I will go back when I can't remember the training and the pain of the race. but won't be any time soon! nice to have a little break now.

Well done benwill ! That sounds very tough, and brings back memories of my own (one and only) marathon where my legs almost gave up at the very same point. You have done a great job!

PS I cannot believe the t shirt situation - what a cheek!

Great report.... and reading it brings back the memories... the industrial section is so bleak, particularly as its so close to the end.... and I recall queueing for over an hour for the loo... being a man has its benefits!!!

That t- shirt is a disgrace, how dare they. I hope you complained?

Great pics too, huge well done :)

benwill profile image
benwillMarathon in reply to ju-ju-

Thank you, the route has changed slightly since we did it back in 2016 they added a bit down at Rotterdean a small hill to go up and down. But not sure where they took away!

I can appreciate it is slightly easier for men when it comes to the toilets.

I havent complained i dont really care so much about the t-shirt just thought it was a bit of cheek so i wont be returning! (as i have now retired from marathon's)

Fantastic achievement, well done! Great report too, but I couldn't believe the cheek of the t-shirts when I saw them posted on FB before the race! Competitor? Pah!

You did it though, and the bling is fab :)

benwill profile image
benwillMarathon in reply to Anniemurph

Thank you, i guess the t-shirt will go the same place as all the finisher t-shirts!

the bling is always good at brighton and a nice ribbon as well, i do like a good ribbon!
