Hello runners 🙂 How is everyone? How are you managing your running routine at this time of year? Have you had a winter wonderland yet? I woke up yesterday and pulled back the curtains and …wow! I wasn’t expecting that! A fair few inches of soft fluffy snow ❄️☃️🌨 (the photo is from my run the day before the snowfall)
At this time of year for some of us it’s a battle, peeling our warm bodies away from bed and heading outside to face a nippy and frosty world. For others, it’s now heading towards summer so I imagine extra early starts might be more the norm to miss the heat. But no matter where we run we must love it, right? Otherwise we wouldn’t do it😍
Which brings us back to the weekly chat! What sort of week have you had?
I’ve had a bit of a busy week because my husband had a minor operation and then caught a virus (not THAT one!) and so I had to look after him as well my mum who is staying with us until the New Year. My husband normally does all the food shopping and cooking (😇 I know!) and so I suddenly found myself in the middle of a supermarket wondering which way to go 🤔 🤣🤣
I still managed my runs though and Mr IP got better 🙂
But last Thursday when he was out and mum was still tucked up in bed I headed out for a run on what was a beautiful sunny, crisp cold morning. After about 2K my phone went and it was mum asking where I was. I had left her a note which she obviously hadn’t seen and as she’s never phoned me during a run before I asked her if she was ok and she said she was a bit dizzy. She sounded confused so I told her I was coming straight back.
Well, I’m sort of still recovering from injury and I haven’t run fast for several months but I was obviously worried about mum and I needed to get home as quickly as possible. So, I ran fast but not flat out as there were patches of ice on the roads and the last thing I needed was to have a face plant and end up with a sprain or injury which wouldn’t have helped me get back to mum quicker!
I got home, a bit red-faced and puffing away but mum was fine. I think she might have picked up my husband’s virus but she’s OK now after a few days in bed so hopefully whatever it was was nipped in the bud.
But here’s the thing. When I looked at my Garmin stats I was delighted to see that my second K was the fastest I have run in years! And what has particularly pleased me is that I didn’t find it especially hard and I had more in the tank 💪 Maybe I need to push myself a bit more from time to time. It’s surprising what you can do when you have to!
Anyway, that’s been my week fellow runners. I hope yours has been good and you’re managing to escape all the various colds and viruses and getting out there for some dreamy runs.
Have a great week everyone.

🏅If you’ve run a milestone run: 10 miles/Half Marathon/Metric Marathon (26.2K)/Marathon/Ultra (50K and beyond) and want a shiny new badge, then head here:
Glad Mr IP and your mum are on the mend. Well done on running your fastest kilometre in years.
I’ve got just 112km to run to hit my annual target so I’ve dropped one of my weekly run’s & I’m just doing easy 5 milers until the end of the year. That works well with the boys being on school holidays & the heat. We’ve got gale force winds coming tonight so I hope that I can get out in the morning.
I ordered some new runners for my Christmas present last week due to a crazy discount. I’m excited for those to arrive & go under the tree.
Im using saucony shift 2 at the moment. I have hallux limits that brings on Morton's nueroma at around 7km. They have a meta rocka so I don't need my orthotics which actually start cause problems at distance running. Also mega cushioning. I have been trialing a pair and they are lovely. Because they have a push off function a tiny bit more speed too. I like the older version because they are £69 as opposed to £225 the newer version. What are you getting?
I’m loving Saucony at the moment. I nearly went with the Shift but the speed 3 had a huge discount so I went with those. I would love to try the shift. Enjoy 😍
I am new to them but already feel converted, I was a brooks ravenna girl before but they made to toe space too narrow. Enjoy that first out with your new runners after Christmas, it's always a special run.
Happy week to you too RunWillie. I think, on balance, I prefer running in the cold to struggling with excessive heat. It is easier to regulate the former. That said, you do live in a beautiful place.
We will be talking to our friend who lives near Brisbane this morning. He is in the middle of getting house repairs done and hoping that the rains don’t arrive before they are finished!
He moved down there from Queensland at a point where everyone was taking special note of flood maps. His location is pretty secure, but the risk and fact of flooding must be a nightmare for many people over there.
Well done on your fastest km; they always feel good. I hope everyone at home recovers well.
We have it too here, MrRfc went down Tuesday last week, and I started on Saturday. I worry about my husband because of the transplant, but we have antibiotics for him in case he needs them, but so far, he's managing even with his immunosuppression.
I got up to 11km last week, which is more than I have run in years. It felt so good. I've been building up slowly, but I think this week, there will be no running for me. Flu and ice mean I'll be staying at home.
Thank you, I rarely get a cold, more sinus problems but in the last three months I have had covid and now this. I was going to tone things down for the Christmas two weeks so fingers crossed the roads will be clearer for the start of January.
That sounds really sensible RFC. We know lots of people who have gone down with a very nasty non covid viral infection. Hope it resolves itself quickly.
Hi Irishprincess , thanks for chat hosting this week. Sorry to hear your family's been unwell and glad to hear that things are improving. Congratulations on that fastest km!
It's mostly been between minus 7° and freezing the past few days, though no proper snow to speak of, just a cm or so. As we've also had heavy frosts there's been a lot of melting and refreezing, making it quite icy. Tbh I find it easier to run when there are several inches of snow.
While I still refuse to get up early, I do love running in the cold. Nothing ambitious, just 5k-10k pootles, avoiding hunters and bulldozers. Plus dog walks, hence the entirely gratuitous photo of Jedi, taken yesterday afternoon. If I can keep going through the winter that'll do me nicely, plans and targets are way too much like hard work.
Safe, happy running all!
Border Collie - Bernese Mountain Dog cross sitting at the side of a forest track
Thanks Irishprincess , from me and Jedi! I've not even pootled for a week - went to a carol concert last Saturday evening, sang next to someone with a beautiful voice and a heavy cold, and by Monday I was starting to feel ropey. Coughing and spluttering like crazy, but need to recover for Monday as am supposed to be with my Renaissance choir singing for elderly hospital residents. 🙄
That is a very handsome dog Cmoi. They do keep us going with their need for walks. Molly will be pestering for her cafe walk soon; Monday is sausage day !! 🙂
I like bonkers!! Molly is highly intelligent and emotionally switched on….but she is bat sh*t crazy too !! A bit like me….just the crazy part in my case 🙂
Thanks Realfoodieclub . I really don't do ice, though fresh powdery snow is OK. Jedi is much better at snow and ice and indeed all slippery surfaces than I am, he has four-paw drive!
Hi IP …..the speedy Princess!! I used to get mum related calls whilst running. They sound as though they are ok really, but you daren’t risk it. Still, thankfully she was fine and you achieved your rapid 1k, so a bit of a win win.
It was really cold this morning. Allegedly 1C, but it felt a lot colder than that; freezing fog didn’t help. Mrs BC has just brought some washing in; frozen solid!!
I decided that an 8k was in order this morning, along my half road/half trail route. There were one or two icy patches, but they were easily avoided. The plan was to repeat the negative splits over the first hilly 5k I managed last week; mission accomplished! Overall pace was 6:52 and the final lap was the least slow at 6:37. The weird thing was that my average heart rate showed way above my normal range. I suspect watch malfunction (I wasn’t remotely out of breath and felt fine), or my heart was having to work overtime to keep me warm. The rate just seemed to increased as I went up the hill, which I would expect, but then it forgot to reduce as I came down again.
I have really enjoyed the last 3 runs, despite the cold. One learning point from this morning. I was wearing enough to keep me warm as I ran, but I was quite cold during my post cafe cool down walk. I might need to take a rucksack with extra layers if this weather persists. No runs until Thursday now (swimming Wednesday) so plenty of time to reflect on tactics. Have a great week everyone.
Sounds like a great run. Well done for getting out there. I have a Garmin and the day before I came down with this chest cold thing my heart rate went higher than normal. The first night I had it my body balance stress level went to 69, even when I lost my little cat it only went up to 55.
🙂 we will blame the weather then. My peak flow is higher than normal too….best to stop looking at the measurements I think. My usual maxim is that if I feel ok, I am ok.
Gosh, for once chillier down here than up there BC. -2c without adding in the wind chill on my run. 🥶 Plus I’m a soft southerner! I’m impressed with your 8k. Too chilly for me to go any further than I did.
I’m also impressed with your pace and HR (forget the watch; I’m sure it was weather related!) You’re cranking up, but in true Captain Sensible fashion. 😇 It’s very easy to forget how quickly we cool down at this time of year, so I think your idea of a cafe layer sounds perfect. 😀
That is a good plan. On a recent run I took off the base layer post run, used my middle layer as a base layer and then put the base layer and finally my top layer on top of that. It was so cold today that my base layer was nowhere near as wet as usual.
The weather forecast says that it will warm up here on Monday…only two cold runs to survive! It has dipped to -2 now…the fog rolling off the hillsides has quite an impact. All character forming my mother would have said (she wasn’t a runner though 🙂).
I think our hearts do need to work harder to keep the blood pumping when we’re cold. Makes sense I guess. Have you got any merino wool layers? I think that’s the best as it’s thin and not bulky but very warm.
Good point IP, as ever. I do indeed have a merino wool base layer, but I had forgotten how good it is! I have been wearing a proper technical base layer….but it isn’t merino. Happily, I know exactly where it is!👍
Well done on your speedy First Response km IP! 💥 I’m so relieved that everything was ok in the end, and I hope Mr IP and your dear mum are clear of the virus soon. Mine lasted for eons, but has now gone. 🙏🏻
I braved the common this morning. It was to have been a gym visit, but time was going on and I knew Flossie needed her walk - so on with the layers and up we popped. I did NRC A Cold Run, and Coach B chatted away giving sage advice. It was surprisingly icy on the frozen, lightly snow covered, grass, so I avoided the hilly bits and minced around happily and covered a pedestrian 5.5k. Didn’t bother with a cooldown walk - didn’t need one - so we headed home. Dentastix for Flossie, hot porridge with blueberries and banana for me. 😋 Smug now. 😀
You’ve given me Badge FOMO Beachcomber66 ! I don’t pay attention to what Garmin hands out as a rule, but I went back to see if I had one, and I can’t find it. Where do you look? It was certainly chilly enough yesterday 🥶🥶🥶
There is a heading marked BADGES if you scroll up from the view which has your run summary and map on it. It is also listed with all of the other badges on my profile page this morning. It was definitely below freezing up in the woods; but I wonder where Garmin gets it data from?
Ahh found it! Thanks. 🙏🏻 But seemingly I earned it on November 27th on a chilly walk. Who knew it was that cold then? 🤷♀️ I wasn’t aware I’d earned it either!
Hello cheekychipmunks, Your chat on badges made me look to see if I missed the frosty badge. I think some badges can be earned just once, while others are repeatable. I received the frosty one in 2019 and I think that it is a once only one. Having said that having looked I see that there are some time restricted badges. I spotted this:
December Weekend 10K LIMITED TIME2 ptsJoin this challenge and record a 10-kilometer running activity from December 16-18.
Hoping for my first 10km in 8 months at the W/E, so perhaps I'll be rewarded with a Garmin badge. Little things please little minds. 😂 Do you fancy going for 10km at the W/E and perhaps Beachcomber66 as well?
Hi over61 👋 Oh, that’s interesting. There’s a lot I don’t know about Garmin badges it seems. Strava are always awarding me something, but it’s nice to have little rewards from Garmin too. Yep, it’s the little things! 😅
I’d be up for 10k this weekend. 😀 It’ll be Sunday, as I’ll be at PR on Saturday. It’s meant to bucket with rain (at least that’s what the BBC app is telling me at the moment) but that doesn’t bother me; I think it should be less frigid by then too. 🤞
What do you mean by sign up for the challenge? 10k in the rain! Doesn't sound so good to me. And are you due to volunteer at the park run or run? Perhaps you have been a run consecutive days lady for some time. I have always kept to 3 days a week.
Oh! I have never joined a challenge before. I'll muse on it, perhaps I won't join the challenge in order to test your theory! 😂 I have never joined any Garmin challenges, wouldn't know how without some research.
Consecutive days running and fun in the rain! Wow wee! What a one you are!
I will if I can get out >61. Covering of snow this morning and freezing conditions to follow into the weekend….and Molly is suddenly having difficulty walking and holding up her head; vet visit at lunchtime. I have seen this before and an anti inflammatory jab sorted it🤞.
Thanks CC. I have massaged her hips and she is walking a bit better now (I had to carry her last time)…. breakfast eaten which is a good sign too. Hopefully she will be fine.
Vet says not a stroke( which was what I was worried about). Anti inflammatory jab and medicine given …apparently my massage was just the right thing and she is much more her normal self. Amazing what a bit of fuss from the vet can do! 🙂
Ok,>61 and cheekychipmunks I have joined the challenge too…I just pressed “join” underneath the challenge! Seems easy enough (pressing the button..not the run!). 🤞 for weather….if Saturday is ok I will probably go for it then…otherwise Sunday. Still snow on the ground at the moment.
I did 5k in cold, then snow and then rain followed by more snow this pm! My asthma didn’t like it….anyway, I am geared up for whatever weather window I can find over the weekend. If it is too bad, I will stay at home!!
I ran today delivering cards, -3℃ feels like -6℃(no ice as it has been so dry). I was fine with my 6 layers!!! Hat, gloves and recently 'made' ankle warmers. A pair of my husband's worn out socks with the feet cut off! I have never joined a Garmin challenge before, hadn't realised one could until cheekychipmunks pointed it out. Saturday looks best weatherise around here. 😊🏃♀️🏃🏻♀️🏃🏻♂️ 10k here we come! If mine happens it will be my first for 8 months. I realise Beachcomber66 that you may need to stay home if your asthma and weather says running has to wait.
Just like week 5 run 3…..ignore pace, just get the distance.🙂 My asthma doesn’t like the icy air so I will not be pushing it. This is my first Garmin challenge too.
10km ✅😊 It was lovely. Loads of layers and no ice. I ran before breakfast yesterday (Saturday) I wonder whether either of you( cheekychipmunks ) will make it too. Badge duly awarded by Garmin.
Wonderful >61….I am so pleased 👏👏👏👏👏👏👏 I think cheeky will make it on the treadmill. I have been out for a pitch inspection; it has given a bit, but still iced up and lethal! The thaw should come overnight, so I will hopefully get in a run tomorrow. The water on top of ice stage is particularly dangerous….one fractured vertebra in a lifetime is enough! 🙂 You did it 🥇🏆🏅
Hi over61andstilltrying and Beachcomber66 👋 Garmin Weekend 10k Challenge complete. I did it at the gym as it was 0 degrees and sleeting first thing. But it was hideous. I don’t usually find 10k hard, even on the treadmill, but today was such very hard work. It took me a looong time to recover too so I sincerely hoping I’m not coming down with something. I was dripping during the run, which isn’t like me at all. 🥵 Lots of my choir friends have colds or covid - please no. 🙏🏻🙄🤞
Still, badge earned so that’s one thing. Did either of you manage yours?
Well done Cheeky….I am the only failure today! Just too dangerous. It is supposed to thaw over night…so hopefully I can run it tomorrow…..badges can wait 👏👏👏👏
Is frustrating ok? 🙄 No point in railing against the elements I know; we took Molly for coffee today (we went by car) and she had a chat with a something doodle who was even bigger than her ….really friendly together. The contact is as important as the exercise .
I swear I typed a reply to this yesterday BC. 🙄 Yes, frustrating is an acceptable F word, and an appropriate one at this time of year too. Hopefully your thaw has happened 🤞Currently 11 degrees here!
Lovely that Molly met a friend. That’s all that’s required sometimes. Flossie had a bit of a duvet day yesterday. Never by herself though - she watched the footie with us and spent a happy afternoon by the roaring 🔥 I feel totally fine today. I was depleted in something after my 10k and the marmite did the trick. Phew! 🙏🏻
I hadn’t considered that…this day will be remembered as the day the lovely, friendly, positive atmosphere on here DIED FOREVER!!! People have very strong views on marmite and to throw chilli into the mix… the apocalypse is coming. 😆😆😆
Oh I don’t know about that MU … not that I disapprove of the flavor combo - but don’t call it Marmite! Same as you shouldn’t be allowed to have Marmite in a squeezy bottle! 😱
Ice and running just simply don't go together. In Britain who knows what we'll have weatherise and when. So just enjoy your next run whenever the conditions are right. 😊
Thanks IP. I haven’t felt 100% since since my run, and I’m hoping it’s a few late nights and lots of carol concerts. Having said that, I immediately felt better after a couple of hunks of toast and marmite - I was craving salt! I also made a huge roast for the family so I’m current vegging on the sofa, unable to move! 😅
I love marmite too but I recently spied a jar of salted caramel in a NT shop and had to buy it. It does taste rather delicious although I’m sure my dentist would be horrified 😱
I’m so relieved that I feel totally fine today IP. No idea why I felt like I did, but marmite did the trick! I’m quite accustomed to treadmill running, there was tons to look at, I had great tunes ….. but wow it was hard yesterday. My body was screaming out for something, and salt appeared to be it! 🙏🏻
Well done to you and I do hope that you are not coming down with anything. You have had more than your fair share. Did you watch something while you ran?
Scroll up about 5 replies and you'll find my 10km badge. The jump down to alerts feature doesn't seem to be working at the moment.
Very pleased to read that you are fine today. Glad marmite worked for you. I like marmite too. Did you watch a film or something during your 10km on a treadmill?
I had to laugh reading your post! Mr Frenc went to Dublin to visit his mum, fell over in the shower, and fractured his upper humerous in 2 places - not that there’s anything humerous about that, but he’s the one who believe it or not does all the hoovering so I’m sure I shall find myself wondering how to plug the thing in!
Well done on that very fast k - I know just what you mean about pushing ourselves. I do find myself thinking I could and should try and go a bit faster from time to time, but somehow I always convince myself that I’ll have no gas left in the tank for later on. Not that I’ve really had a chance to push myself - have had to shorten my runs to 3k at the mo on physio orders due to a stumble I took ages ago which caused proximal hamstring tendinopathy apparently, which although healed, has caused scar tissue which can be painful to run on for any longer distance. I miss my long runs 😔 but they will still be there in the new year. It’s good to have a new year goal already!
Glad to hear your mum was ok and hopefully a few days in bed did her the power of good.
Hi IP, sounds like you’ve been very busy, I hope your hubby and mum are better now. I’ve only been out for two small runs this week, I’m having hypnotherapy for my anxiety and it’s affecting me a bit. Hoping the new year will be better and O can get back into running properly then. Well down on your fastest km for years, keep safe this slippy weather. Merry Christmas 😊⛄️☃️
Two small runs in a week is great! I think it’s harder at this time of year for all sorts of reasons, the weather, the short days, the things we have to do and people we try to see, blah blah. It’s a wonder we get out there at all!
I hope the hypnotherapy brings you some solace. Take care x
Glad that your family is on the mend and congrats on your speedy run!
I followed the NRC HM plan back in the Autumn and found that it made a significant difference to my speed, even when I wasn’t trying (for example, accidentally breaking my ParkRun PB).
I’ve managed 1000 miles for the year so I’m heading into semi-hibernation over this cold spell. Although I have agreed to a slow 14 mile trail run from Cheltenham with a colleague (current forecast is about 6C but heavy rain). As for the running club, I’m thinking of cancelling the runs until the weather’s a bit warmer (or, at least, the remains of the snow have gone).
I might have to take a look at the NRC plans as they seem mighty popular around here!
Well done on that mileage SM! That’s terrific. A trail run from Cheltenham sounds lovely. I’ve often thought about doing the Cheltenham HM but I think it usually clashes with something else….
I am so happy to know that. Mr IP (Prince of Ireland) and your mother, as I called her years ago, the Queen of Ireland are fine as you found out after that magnificent run with that second kilometer being the fastest you have ran in years, congratulations,
Good to know your husband and mum are OK , well done on your fast km, like you say its surprising what we can do when we have to!
I only had 1 run last week but it was a good one, a night-time trail run. It was promoted as a flat run with a big hill in the middle, I asked if it was THAT hill I thought it was and they said yes! Eeek it's a renowned one here with a nickname which was non PC so got changed to "The hill with no name!" Around 8 of us went , 5 miles of fun!
Hopefully out at club tonight if it's not too slippy.
Sorry , I meant promoted by my friend Pat who organised the run, it's not anything official just a group of us that meet once a week! The main incentive is cheesy chips at the pub afterwards! 🤣I feel like I'm getting the dreaded cold tonight, hopefully not🤞xxx
Oh blimey. Glad everyone is on the mend IP, I hope you’ve been able to look after yourself as everyone else, you really put the blue lights on there!! 👏👏
I’ve got a bit of an incentive at the moment that has really brought my mojo back - I’m trying to get to 1000 miles before the end of the year. I took it for granted that the marathon training would eat up the miles but it didn’t and when I got to the start of the month I had to make a decision as I was about 27 miles behind target. Well, you know me, I like a challenge!
So RED December it is, 5km a day and I’m chiselling away at it. Day 13 and I’ve 60 miles to go.
Whatever the weather, I’m going out in it, including the thick snow and ice. I wouldn’t advise it but I am going slowly and carefully and being very particular about the shoes (the new speedy ones are having to stay in the cupboard unfortunately). So far, so good. I’ll get there 👍 Very glad I treated myself to another pair of my favourite thermal running tights!!
Thanks IP! It’s getting me and Katnap out. Tonight it was particularly treacherous. Should have been a treadmill run really but I’d probably have fallen over on the way to the gym! It’s actually less slippy running!
Good morning IP! Glad to hear your mum and hubby are on the mend and congratulations on your speedy 5k. My tactics currently are to book onto my running club scheduled runs to keep me accountable, so last week I went off for my efforts session on Monday evening and the normal club run on Thursday evening. Usually my 3rd run of the week is parkrun, but this weekend I have been in France for my running club Xmas dinner, so went for a 9k run with them on Sunday morning in -5 temperature. I thought I did rather well - travelling with just a small bag, but I still managed trail shoes (more grippy than road shoes) winter running tights, long sleeved top, short sleeved top, micro fleece, windproof jacket, gloves and woolly hat. Toasty 😃😃
Great idea Sandie to keep close to your running club, probably no slacking allowed there! The 9K sounds fab even if it was a tad chilly 🥶 Good for you.
If you’re anything like me, I always try to pack my running shoes in my hand luggage as it would be in thinkable if they went astray in my hold luggage 😱
Well done on the fast 1km and hope you get your dreamy instead of stressy run time in the days ahead.👏
I'm a bad correspondent here and only drop in once in a while when time allows and I can sit down to think a bit about the running. (Question: is it better to think about the running or just get out and run? ) Running is such a nice respite that I like it for just that - a chance not to think about other stuff and concentrate on just being out there.
Anyways, my running thoughts at the moment are about keeping the progress from this year going (did my first two HMs this year) and also about a 10 miler at the start of Jan. So I'm really happy with where I've got to but there are issues, During the second HM I got a lot of internal pain about 5km from the end and had to walk a couple of ks before being able to resume (the pain is a treatment related issue but fortunately relatively rare). I'm wondering if this particular pain episode was running related (if I over-stress the body etc etc.) and whether I have to be realistic and not try to run too far / too hard. Impossible to know and I think I would just prefer to shove thoughts about this to back of mind and say "go away and don't bother me - I'm just going to run whatever". Doing the ten miler in Jan (it's a fairly hard XC with the strapline "Tough Not Timid"!) is both an attempt to keep longer stuff going and to see what happens.
Last Sunday was a bit of prep with a 10k XC ("Bah Humbug 10k" in south Leeds) with some of the best marshals ever. Both fun and "type 2" fun at times - very cold and stiff towards the end. But pleased to get round in an OK time. Another XC this weekend - with a huge water jump - there will be mud! So, hopefully all is on track and keeping options open for next year.
I'm afraid this is a bit of a brain dump - but it's really useful just to write things down and reflect for a few minutes; so thanks for being there.
Happy running everyone and looking forward to seeing what people's New Year Running Resolutions are in due course 😀
Gosh, you’ve got a lot going on with your races! Good for you. Having a 10 miler in January will definitely keep you going through December 🙂 I have one in March which gives me a bit of time.
When I read your thoughts about thinking or doing a run i was reminded of a conversation a Personal Trainer had with me many years ago before I was a runner. I was always faffing about and asking, “should I go to the gym or go home and sit on the sofa instead?” “Should I go to the gym to night or first thing tomorrow morning?” etc. He said to me, “your problem is that you think about it too much. Just do it”. Of course, he’s absolutely right 🤗
Would you like some pom pom cheering from your VRBs for your events? If so, give us the details here. It’s fun!
Hi IP, seems lot of people here like running in winter. So am I. Still finish same amount of kms as I run in other seasons. Cold could help improve your performance and make you a better runner next Spring. Sticking to the running plan at this time of the year gives double returns in the long run.
The annoying part is the poor air quality sometimes in winter here. I would imagine myself an automatic mobile air-cleaning machine pouding the road on a regular basis. Another one is, road is very slippery in rainy or snowy days. Which increases the odds of injuries. I got a black toenail once after running in a rainy day when the toes bumped against the shoes along the path due to water in shoes.
Take care and carry on, all. Plus, try to relax and smile in your every running.
I think, mostly, the conditions in winter are more enjoyable than the heat and humidity of some summer days. But everyone is different and there are a few people here who prefer summer running.
But you’re right about the conditions. Ice is a no-no for me as I just don’t want to risk an injury 😱
Pleased to read that your Mum was fine and you husband is better. Well done on your speedy 1km. Were you alright afterwards? I don't think my injury areas would be happy if I went for much speed.
I see you mentioned 5-10km pootles, so have you already run a 10km? I'm hoping that I'll run my first 10km for 8 months at the W/E. Yesterday, just like last year my running while also completing Christmas errands meant friends insisted I went in for a catch up which was lovely. Different friends to last year, perhaps being spotted and persuaded in will become a regular feature of nearing Christmas time runs. 😊 Biggest card delivery run due on Thursday.
I was absolutely fine afterwards thank goodness but it wasn't far which probably helped.
I’ve done two 10Ks now. I wanted to get to 10K by the end of the year and then start to increase slowly again in the New Year. I have a 10 mile race in March so I really want to be completely out of the injury by then 🤞
Fingers crossed for your 10K at the weekend. Enjoy it. It’s such a fabulous feeling to run the distance again after a long spell on the IC. But if you're anything like me, there’ll probably be a touch of apprehension too 🫤
Thank you 😊 I have been taking things very gently and my 9km last w/e even with 204m elevation gain seemed easy.😊
I did a Christmas card delivery run this morning and see that my pace was so slow compared to the same sort of run last year, over 1min/km slower. Ah well ... such it is.
I also wanted to reach 10km before the end of the year. I do realise that things are not right in my knee, but at least I seem able to run. Sounds very good that your running is back up to 10km and a speedy km too with no ill effects 😊🏃♀️
Taking it gently is the best way forward after a spell on the IC. I see you're planning a Garmin challenge 10K “with” Beachcomber66 and cheekychipmunks on Sunday. That’s a great idea. If we didn't have family here I would join you but I can’t get out atm anyway as the snow is still thick around here and the roads are too icy.
I was almost ahead of the game and had decided last minute to do my 10k at the gym this morning IP. (Challenge runs 16th-18th). But Mr Cheeky texted me asking if I could come to the office and relieve him of his heavy kit bag before his office do in town later. He’d have had to schlep it around otherwise.🙄
So, being a bit pressed for time, I made it 5k instead and will revert to Plan A - run the 10k on Sunday!
I had to grit the drive to make sure it was safe for the army of couriers who keep appearing with parcels ( stuff we have bought for others). Hope things warm up over the weekend.🤞
Sneaked on here just to read the posts...Good to know that Maj's Consort and Maj Mum are making progress... You have your hands full indeed.
Lovely photograph and I don't think we have seen the end of the snow. We have some still lying here and a really hard frost. Ice is still here and I cannot run!
Lucky you getting the run in and getting a fast time on too , as you raced back to Mum .
Mum is still not 100% Floss, it’s really weird. She is worse in the morning and gets better as the day goes on. Because of the snow and ice we haven’t ventured outside which doesn’t help as she’s not getting fresh air but hopefully we’ll get out today for a little wander.
I did get out my sewing machine yesterday and had to look up online how to set it up as I hadn’t used it for years! I promised one of the little ones an apron and I forgot all about it so that’s what I’ll be doing…. hopefully 🤞
I haven't run since Saturday but am weighing up whether to try the arboretum today as the paths there should be ok.
