Treadmill run: The runs after the big events are always the hardest for me as the monumental effort to complete a half marathon burns me out for a week or two after.

I set out to run 10K on Monday and only managed 5K and some weights after. Today I pushed myself to finish the 10K as I didn’t want a psychological block about completing it. I have to say that it took all my mental strength to get through it. I was feeling very fatigued around 7-8K and I almost stopped. However, I’m made of stronger stuff these days and forced myself to the finish line only a couple of minutes off my PB. At some point in the bear future I’m going to knock 5 minutes of my current PB, I can sense it. For now though, I have to get my motivation back so that every run isn’t a monumental struggle with myself.

Well done Dodgy. The main thing is you didn’t give up. I’d take that as a massive win! 🏃‍♂️👊

I have a question. I enjoy treadmill running too, but I find it annoying how the upper time limit is 60 minutes before it goes into cooldown mode and the display changes meaning I can’t see how far I’ve run. I can keep pipping it back up to speed, but I have to rely on my watch to tell me the distance - and since I don’t calibrate that until I’ve finished, it could be way off.

How do you manage?

Sorry for the late reply. I don’t get on here enough. So I use the NRC distance app which is always faster than the treadmill reading. In order to minimise the amount of time getting the treadmill up to speed after it cuts out on the hour, I often get the treadmill next to it running and hop across. If it’s being used I simply keep running on the spot until the treadmill is back up to speed. The NRC app seems to operate on arm swings (I may be completely wrong) but I keep swinging my arms on the spot to make sure it doesn’t pause. Sometimes I take it as a toilet break and then allow a brief pause. I used to think that the NRC app was not accurate but on every outdoor run I’ve done the NRC is usually most accurate followed by the watch. I’ve never done an organised run using Strava. Therefore I have confidence that the treadmill distances dictated by the NRC app are accurate. FYI years ago when I ran 5K at the gym, I used to go by the treadmill distance. My PB was 28mins 30secs and that was flat out. I was proud of my time but felt envious of other people’s faster times. I reckon if I’d run that same pace on the NRC app it would’ve been around 26mins 30secs. So I was probably faster than I ever gave myself credit for.
