Hey all!

How's it going? Tell us all about it in the comments! 😍

If you're new here, or just taking a look and getting comfortable before posting, hello! This post is a great place to introduce yourself if you're ready to do so.

My fitness has taken a dive in the past few months! I've had a sore Achilles, some nasty virus-with-a-cough that hung around for ages (many negative Covid tests later, who knows?!), tonsillitis, and an oddly high resting heart rate πŸ€” Not asking for sympathy, and I'm fine now, but I'm definitely falling into the trap of comparing my current performance with where I was in the past. A runner that I follow on social media (instagram.com/hungryrunnerg... she's super fast and inspiring to me!) has a habit, when coming back from a break, of resetting her Garmin HISTORY (personal bests) - effectively starting from scratch. I never liked this idea in the past, but after all my struggles this year so far I decided to give it a go!

Every run since has been a personal best, and Garmin tells me at the end of the run about all the new records I've broken 🀩 So it's as if I'm starting afresh, and the only way is up 😊😊😊

I realise that speed is not the be all and end all, so to those of you who aren't keen on speed - don't @ me! πŸ˜‚ There are many goals we can have for our runs. I read recently about Lisa Jackson (author of 'Your Pace or Mine' amazon.co.uk/Your-Pace-Mine... , famous for frequently coming dead last in races and loving it) saying that one of her main goals during a marathon is simply to meet as many people as possible along the way 😍 But for myself, I would like to improve my finishing times. I have been following some of the reports about the Boston Marathon, which happened last weekend, and I would SO LOVE to qualify for that one day!!!! I was chatting to my husband about it, saying oh it would cost too much money to get there, and he said if it's something I want to do then why not? Red rag to a bull πŸ˜‚ But I would have to run a marathon in under 3 hours and 55 minutes to get in...

Something to shoot for, maybe.

⭐ RANDOM QUESTION: Pizza or pasta? Details, please 😜

- I'm team pasta, but I always have pizza margherita the night before a marathon!

Have a great week!

The Marathon Team xxx

Yikes and double yikes roseabi - resetting your Garmin! πŸ˜±πŸ˜±πŸ˜…πŸ˜… Actually it’s a great idea as, like you say, every distance is going to be a PB with virtual bling. Who doesn’t love that? πŸ₯°

We used to live in Boston. It’s a wonderful wonderful city, and I know lots of the marathon route. I wasn’t a runner back then of course. It’s a hilly course, but if anyone can do it, you can! Oh please go for it one day! πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ‘

I’m rather over excited about meeting up with a herd of HU buddies next weekend in London, so don’t mind me! Counting down the days. πŸ¦‹πŸŽ‰

Sorry you’ve been going through a ringer but glad you’ve turned the corner πŸ™‚ And I think you’re brave for resetting your Garmin! 😱 The thought terrifies me! I’m not that brave. I remember once driving to a run route and realised I’d forgotten my Garmin. I was so traumatised I thought about driving home again to get it….. πŸ™„

Lisa Jackson is very funny, that book is such a great read. If you want to then I have no doubt you’ll qualify for Boston. That would be an amazing marathon to do πŸ₯³πŸ˜ Go you! I would love to read your run report πŸ€—

I’m with you on the fitness side as I haven’t run or done any exercise (or much of anything) for five weeks now because of my back ☹️ but thank goodness it’s at last starting to feel better and I’m off the horrible cocktail of drugs which has left me feeling yuk.

I can’t wait to get back to my usual routines and feel like myself again.

I saw a fab osteopath last week who thinks I’ve sprained my psoas muscle! Apparently it starts from your lower back and runs around to the front of your hip, exactly where I’ve been having my pains. Her husband is a runner so she understands my need to return πŸ™‚ She says running is very hard on this muscle and most runners overlook it so it’ll be interesting what strengthening exercises she’ll give me in future.

On the upside of my back issue, I can’t do any housework either. Such a shame β˜ΉοΈπŸ˜‚

Have a great week everyone x

PS. Pasta every time for meβ€¦β€¦πŸ˜

I’m glad you’re getting off the meds. Hopefully you’re on your way to a recovery πŸ˜€πŸ’ͺπŸ‘.

Housework is vastly overrated isn’t it. Who’d be polishing their nick-nacks when there’s trails to be conquered πŸ™‚

Hi roseabi and running friends, I'm also coming back from an injured Achilles (schoolboy error of overtraining) but I'm getting there. I've been redoing some of the runs on the C25K app which has helped me establish my level of fitness at least. I'm doing run 2 of week 6 after work tonight, which should be 2x10 minutes. I know I can do that as I did run 3 of week 5 last Thursday, and that was a solid 20 minute stint. After that (if all goes well) I'll be finishing week 6 with a solid 25 minute run on Wednesday.Hopefully that will give me the confidence I need for the Vitality London 10K next Monday. I'm just aiming to get round and I'll walk when I need to, as I'm not convinced I'm fit enough to run a whole 10K at the moment. After that I've got a few organised runs planned, but my major target this year is the virtual London Marathon on 2 October, followed by the Great South Run in Portsmouth two weeks later πŸƒβ€β™‚οΈ

By the way, I'm firmly in the pizza camp πŸ•

You can absolutely run Boston roseabi 😍

It’s Anzac Day today here.

They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old;

Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.

At the going down of the sun and in the morning

We will remember them.

This weekend it was β€œThe Light Horse Ultra which happens over Anzac weekend. You can choose a 1,1 hour kids,3,6,12 or 24 hour race. I didn’t run it but here’s a couple of results from Women in my run club.

182.5km in 24hours (3rd place in the race)

60km in 6 hours

I’m in awe! β€οΈπŸƒβ€β™€οΈπŸƒβ€β™€οΈ

I did this on New Year’s Eve… connect still has my overall records, so my watch measures seasons bests now (something they could easily automate)

I think, splitting hairs and being pedantic, pizza and pasta are the same, they are both dough (impasto) with sauce and some other stuff 🀣. I’d rather choose a favourite child than make this decision, so while I don’t like American style pizza as much, I’d have to go with a Chicago town from a few years ago (they may still do it, but I haven’t seen it) Mac n Cheese deep pan pizza.

Not for the first time, you have given me pause for thought roseabi.

After months of injuries/ niggles/ covid… and yet another set back recently, my running has been pants! My regular physio is on the job again and I did manage 4K last time out. Of course fitness is as an issue now, but I was briefly put back in the VO2 max β€œexcellent” category last week after a slightly quicker 3k. I am asking myself a question; is at best senseless, and at worst demoralising, to keep comparing myself to the person who was knocking out sub 30 minute 5ks for fun and hot on the trail of a sub 60 minute 10k 18 months ago? Wouldn’t it be better to just look at the β€œhere and now” and focus on any current progress, run on run, as success?

I don’t know whether I can summon up the courage to hit delete; but it is very tempting. Well done to you for pressing the button and then posting about it!

Hello Beachcomber66, To reset yourself or not, that is indeed a question. I look forward to reading what you decide. I just went in my mind with thinking post knee injury, or post hamstring injury or post gardening leave. After the knee injury even 3 minutes running seemed like progress from not even walking. We don't know what the future holds and can only do the best we can with our current bodies.

Definitely look at the β€œhere and now” and focus on any current progress, run on run, as success.

Hi over61. It is probably a circular thought process for me; I won’t want reset until I have recovered…and at that point I will probably forget all about resetting!! I am confident that my physio knows what she is doing and she has an ex US Marine in training with her….I am sure they will knock me into shape between them! Off for an attempt on 5k now, despite the freezing cold northerly wind….I must be a bit crazy !! πŸ™‚

Hello roseabi and lovely VRBs!

I've also fallen into the comparing trap, asking myself how the hell did I complete a trail marathon less than seven months ago ? Answer: five months of mostly miserable training! Next question: do I want to go through all that again just to cover a specific distance on a specific date? Answer: no, there's nothing that appeals right now.

Re Garmin, I was getting too hung up on stats, so decided I wouldn't record all my runs. Though I made an exception last month as I was taking part in an elevation challenge (not on Strava) and wanted to ensure I'd recorded every last metre of vertical!

Pizza please, but it has to be made by one of my former EFL students!

Hello roseabi, I am pleased to read that your heath is fine now. Long may it continue to be so.

Resetting Garmin isn't something that I have considered. I remember considering various achievements as post knee injury. That seemed fine for me. As initially I couldn't even walk any achievement seemed worth smiling about.

I have also been struggling with my left Achilles. I shall be seeing a physio face to face on 20/5/22. It doesn't stop me running although it is still swollen. I now complete the exercises while brushing my teeth which means they get attention twice a day. But with my Achilles trouble, recurrent knee trouble and possible piriformis muscle problems I know that I mustn't push things too much.

I have been enjoying the Nike Running Club guided runs of various types, but I have concluded that for the moment I mustn't exceed a pace effort of about 7 out of 10.

On Sunday I had Shanane Flannagan coaching me via the Nike Running Club App, amazing! The Boston marathon had numerous mentions. She has won the woman's New York Marathon and is an Olympic silver medalist for the10km. Coaching little old me! I am already looking forward to hearing all about your experience of the Boston Marathon!

As for the pasta pizza question, my husband and 'went low carb' three years ago. So we don't eat either - I know we are odd! I spiralize courgettes and cook them in place of pasta. Yum!
