Shingles

Hi all, after a few niggles and following sage advice I’m a few weeks away from my first HM. Up to 15k on my long run and all seemed well, then yesterday shingles, my sciatic nerve has crops of sores and my leg is so sore. The HM is 27th March, is this now doable? So frustrating.

Ohhhh I'm so sorry you have this! And I'm afraid that you may well find you don't feel up to running that half at the end of March, although see how you go of course. Have a look at your options for deferment, and rest well xxx

Oh no how horrible. Have you been given any antiviral meds? I was told they were effective but only if taken within the first couple of days or so (from memory). I had shingles about three weeks before the Great South Run. I went ahead and ran that event, but I didn't enjoy it and with hindsight shingles was probably a big factor (even though all visible signs were well gone).

If you have any option to defer, as roseabi suggests, it would be worth considering. Even if the t&cs say not, it's worth a call or an email - event organisers can often be surprisingly flexible. Whatever you decide, I hope you feel better very soon.

Oh dear 😟. You have my sympathy. An uncomfortable and painful condition.

My husband has had bouts of this but thankfully they’ve been short-lived. Last time he had it he used kali-phos and Paracetamol for the pain. Good food is medicine, so eat well 🙂

I’ve got a HM on the 27th and I’ve been injured for five weeks - six weeks by tomorrow 😤. I did a test jog a few days ago and will have another try tomorrow.

I wish you all the best with your recovery. Look after yourself! 💪🙂

If this is your first dose it is usually the worst, it generally makes me feel run down, and the first one was very painful, but I'd say you have to just see how you feel as everyone is different. I was told I must always use antiviral tablets, so I hope you have had medical advice too. I carried on working through my first bout (I was in my early 20's though!) using pain relief and subsequent bouts were much less severe. It definitely seems to attack me when I'm run down so look after yourself! I haven't had it while running (touch wood!) So I can't help you there but I suppose it might slow your training plan and make you adjust your focus for the race?
