HM training plan.

Hello all, I am down to do my first HM in May (Great West Run). I have just joined a HM training running group that does 10K every Monday, which I'm loving! But they run really fast and while I can just about cope with 10K at that pace, (6.30 km), I worry that if I join them for longer runs, that are an increase on what I've already done, I'll get injured. My plan is to increase my distance by doing a longer slower run once a week /fortnight and a short run once a week. Does that sound like the right approach?

Thank you 😊

Do you mean you'll do three-ish runs per week: the weekly club 10k, a short run, and a long slow run? Sounds perfect!

Enjoy your training and keep us posted! xxx

Hi

As Roseabi wrote, three times a week sounds a great way to train.

If there are others in your HM training group who are at about the same level as you, you could ask them if they’re interested in joining you on longer runs.

Hi Liz. At the moment you are doing 10k/wk. The only thing I would caution is to move to the three run weekly distance in small increments from your current 10k week, maybe in around 10% -15% overall weekly mileage increases.

Thanks. I'm trying to do 3 runs a week, one of which is 10k with the group. I'm going to make one of them a longer, slower run, adding between 1&2 km a week. But I'll have to do that on my own - I think adding distance at the group's pace would kill me!

Sounds like a great plan! I remember feeling the same way trying to keep up with my old run group of 20 somethings! It eventually got easier but that first year was tough! :). The long run at your pace makes good sense.

No, don't fixate on that number. The annual number means absolutely nothing. Simply concentrate on "your pace" not theirs. Everyone has their own pace that does not necessarily correlate to their years - both ways!
