Is it normal to go really cold after a long(er) run?

As I’m slowly increasing distance, I’m noticing that I’m really cold about 15 minutes after getting in from a run - after a shower and getting changed.

Im taking 1-2 hours to warm up again - I was delayed getting in the shower today, and it was especially bad.

I don’t usually notice the cold - I was too warm on todays run, don’t know if that’s related. Wore longs, were short would probably have been better.

I notice this on 10k and up. Never after 5k, not run a distance between 5-10 for ages so wouldn’t like to say what happens there.

It’s just taking the fun out of it a bit, won’t stop me though 😆

Yes it's pretty normal, and certainly something I experience from time to time. Your best bet is to get indoors and take a quick shower, and get into some warm dry clothes asap. Have a hot drink and/or food to warm up your insides. And don't worry! xx

Sorry, I just realized that I only partially answered your question!

I think that the fact that this happens after longer runs may be due to depletion of energy reserves, and you may also need to investigate your routines and calorie intake.

Also if you are feeling warm you may be sweating more, which would make you feel colder later.

It happens. I mentioned it in one of my blogs and also experienced it myself.

That happens to me for any run of 30 minutes or more, we come home after a run have a cup of tea then run a hot bath by which time i’m shivering so now i strip off the running kit and put a warm tracksuit on while drinking the tea and it helps a bit but only the soak in a hot bath really warms me up again, I don’t know if it’s connected but my blood pressure drops really low after a run

Try eating something once you get in, maybe after the stretches but before showering. Something quick, light and easily digestible. Bananas, smoothie (prepared beforehand) etc.

I’ve experienced it a few times. A hot “warm your bones” shower and calories in within 30min of the run usually works well for me. And coffee. Always coffee ☕️

I’ve had this a lot. The number of times I’ve driven back after a race with heating on full blast and still felt cold! I think it’s best to have a hot shower asap after a long run.

Yes, I often notice this on runs of 10k or more .As you say , 15, 20 or 30 minutes after

I usually try and eat something soon after the run and then a hot bath or shower

Yes, I feel very similar. I've found a cup of tea with sugar in helps. Plus putting on something dry if I'm not showering straight away . Often I don't start my runs from home, so I have a big warm dry hoodie in the car - the car heating also goes on max.

I hope you manage it ok and it doesn't put you off your 10k runs.

I usually end my runs with a dip in the north sea as a cool down, and it take me ages to warm up after. I'm usually to be found clutching a hot water bottle, but I've very little body fat for insulation so heat up fast, and cool down equally fast.

Very hard core of you 😃💪👍

I went to see my pal the other week. I found her in the North Sea 😳😁

She had one of those big, warm throw overs to put on. I had hot choc and cookies in hand for her as I thought that’s where she’d be 🥶🙂

Warm top on if you’re going back to the car. Or when you get home, take your running gear off. Then you can make a brew, go in the bath, or eat.
