Goodness goshness it's nearly June!! How's your running going, tell us alllllll about it!!!!!! π
My Garmin tells me I'm "Overreaching" at the moment - never seen that one before! I did have my rather disastrous attempt at a half marathon last Monday, but other than that haven't done all that much in the past week - two more runs, a swim, and a little bike ride. My VO2max went down by a couple of points recently, I think that has something to do with it.
Anyway, the weather's nice here at the moment, may as well take Mr Garmin's advice and have a beach day π
Who's been working hard at their training? Who's taking a break? Anyone else ever been told off by Garmin for overdoing it?
As always, if you're new here, or just browsing through the community posts, this is a great place to introduce yourself and let us know how you are doing. Youβll find plenty of support and knowledge from your fellow runners here.
Iβve just started my Half Marathon training schedule and am starting with Runners World beginners HM schedule as it seems easy to follow and not too difficult. However, there is a jump from the end of week 11 from 7 miles to the 13 miles of race day. The previous week before that is 11 miles long run. Iβll have to see how that all feels in a couple of months when I get there. Since I actually have closer to 16 weeks before the run, Race Day on that plan will be the warm up and then after Iβve seen how that goes I can switch to the last 4 weeks of yours or Abiβs plan. Thatβs the idea anyway.
Sounds standard for a training plan: the 11 miles is the final build-up run, the 7 miles will be part of yoyr tapering (i.e. easing back on the training so that you're fully rested ready for the event).
Hi roseabi and running friends! Iβve been injured for a little while now but hopefully Iβm well on the way to recovery. π€ Iβm waiting to hear about a physio appointment so they can have a look at it properly.πI had last week off work and went to Derbyshire for a holiday. Iβve posted about that on the B210K community so I wonβt repeat it here. The weather wasnβt very kind getting up there (particularly by motorbike!) but it improved over the week. I had a chance to do plenty of walking up hill and down dale while I was there. I also had plenty of food too, so the exercise came in handy. Even so I put on 2 lbs in weight. I should be able to address that once Iβm running again!
This week's plan is just to run 5K three times after Saturday's disastrous 5K
Also to work out what's going on with my back - stretching is ok, I can put my hands flat on the floor when touching my toes, but I can't put my left ankle on my knee, my right one is fine, plus if I sit down and put the soles of my feet together like a frog, that's fine too, I have no idea what muscle I need to work on just to be able to sit with my left ankle on my right knee - any ideas?
no, the middle left of my lower back - looking at a muscle chart it looks like the gluteus medius, but I tried the exercises for that from the internet (pigeon pose etc.) and I could do all those, it seem to be the specific movement of bringing my leg up in a cross leg type shape.
I am just lifting it manually, gently until I feel the pull and holding it there, it seems to be loosening a bit
π€ I would be leaning towards psoas muscle myself, the exercises are very similar though I think. Bear with it, keep stretching, if its more gluteus maybe try what I call the "weeble". Sit on a carpet/rug. Loosely hug your knees and lift your feet, roll slightly onto your glutes and just gently wobble around feeling for an tight spots and spend longer balancing over those. Some folks sit on a tennis ball too but I find this a great help for identifying just where might be tighter than I realise π€π»
Thanks, to use a tennis ball I would have to lay on it, it's not under my bum, it's a bit further up, but I will try the weeble wobble (hopefully without falling down) - the yoga ball seems to be helping a bit with opening it up a bit
Hi, yes I had that recently overeaching and -2 points on VO2 so I took a step back and am now back to normal and have regained those 2 points. I'm tapering for my HM on Sunday where I am currently elite lead female runner (due to administrative error...). Trying to work out what tapering should look like this week and I think I'll do my training session Tuesday, a 6km on Wednesday as slow as possible and then 15' on Friday (or Saturday?) before Sunday race. Hope you are all well
Iβve had a phenomenal May. My husband and I have just completed our final runs for RED May for CHSS raising an amazing Β£855 and running a combined 468km, I contributed 210km to this total. What an amazing challenge we set ourselves and really enjoyed it. Happy running everyone π€
Three runs in a row with no calf/peroneal problem, 2x5ks completed without so much as a twinge . Definitely encouraging signs and GNR in September no longer seems impossible. My pace has picked up each time too, but I am being very careful about stride length. The sun is shining and VO2 max gave me a point back! Can't be bad. Beach time with Molly and visiting kids now. π
Thanks CC. Really steady as we go this time. I am sticking to one pair of shoes and trying to do everything (warm up etc) exactly the same on every run. I have even taken to having vitamin B tablets and crisps to ward off cramp. π
Thanks Dexy !!! I am now looking forward to the hills of Scilly for a bit of strength building. It is baffling; run after run and the calf tightens up and then suddenly everything feels ok again! I am sure that the crisps have made the difference!
East head our favourite beach, wonβt ever make the mistake of going at a weekend though, did once took hours to get out the car park, Lancing market on beach green today so no point going to our local beach either
Itβs lovely out there, Iβve been inside at work all day but poor Willow had to sit in the park waiting for my car to be fixed, poor thing lol π xx
Sorry, that didnβt come across as funny as I meant it, my car had to be fixed and I was being a bit sarcastic at poor Willow having to sit in the park and wait for it, heβs fine thanks, nicely tanned
I saw Brighton on the TV last night and locals were saying they were staying at home to avoid al the visitors. We felt the same over the weekend! Today as better.
What happened with your HM? I canβt imagine you having a disastrous run. Good to know it happens to you running super heroes sometimes π₯°
The first time I was conscious of Garmin telling me, I was overreaching, was the week, I was consciously running slower than I had ever run before, after reading 80/20 running. That was what convinced me to start running by heart rate.
Nearly a year later I can just about run in zone 2 so progress has been madeπ€£β€οΈπββοΈ
May was my biggest running month at 106.8 miles. I also got a park run pb of 28.30. Garmin has me in recovery at the moment π
I'm on week 8 of a 16 week McMillan HM plan. Running 4 times a week when previously I only ran 3 times. Although I have followed the plan perfectly, I think it is tiring me out. And now the weather is so hot even early in the morning, that is adding to the issue. Humidity was 88% this morning - very hard. Having said all that! I am enjoying itπ€ And hope to be able to continue to follow the plan anyway.
Garmin told me I was unproductive last week because of lack of low intensity exercise. Today I have changed to productive. Gotta say I dont like the description "unproductive".
Ah I don't really, but it's quite amusing to see these things! It was telling me I could run a marathon in 3 hrs 30 minutes at one point - as if!!! π€£
Your post has given me a great laugh roseabi. No fear of me ever getting an overreaching message, even if I had a garmin. Similarly with taking a break. If I stop I will never restart. The other thing I am totally chilled about is folks hurtling past and they are walking.lol.Back at 18k.Perhaps do 18k and two HM for my next 3 runs before starting building the 3chunks of 14k and 17k.
I've had overreaching several times π€£ and yet now, when it could probably be right in declaring "overreaching" on a loudhailer it prefers "Unproductive"! Unproductive!? So attaining and sailing through your goals is "Unproductive "!? Just shows what a plonker it is π€£ it's been slowly reducing my vo2max too... mainly cause I so rarely use my "road" profile and that's the only one that measures it.... so basically it knows nothing! π€£π€£π€£ we pay for this too don't forget π€£π€£π€£π
Having reached my goal of 50k and breezed through recovery (so far) I'm content to just enjoy "ordinary" runs for a while.
The sun and warmth has finally appeared which is lovely. I've got some non running time with a friend in June for a few days so it will be interesting to see if I get itchy feet.
A little break now and then is definitely good for us though! πππ»
Maybe it has a more traditional notion of βunproductiveβ. As in, βlook at the hoovering you didnβt do and think of the novel you didnβt write because you were too busy runningβ.
I'm back to "productive" again following yesterday's efforts *simper* πππ
It's all a bit silly really, but kinda hard to ignore! Earlier in the year I was thinking about going after my VO2MAX to see if I could get up to 50, glad I forgot about that one!
I think I got mine up to 48 once, but the colder weather, and inactivity when I got injured knocked it back again. It's hard to ignore it, but it can be so detrimental, just like the Monday Strava blues.... no matter what you did over the week, or weekend Monday says ZERO.... you have done NOTHING.... LOSER!!! ππ€£π
Iβve just finished the Mid Sussex Marathon, which isnβt one really. Itβs in three legs, ten miles on each of Saturday and Sunday, then 10k today. The short run today was by far the hardest. I went home twice during todayβs run, once to get sun cream and once for a drink. I havenβt ever run in such heat, except for very short runs when I was on holiday in Portugal, and Iβm not sure whether to try it a bit more to get used to it or just try and always run in the early time before it gets hot.
Anyway, it feels good to have done the last of this weekendβs runs.
Next up is the Brighton HM which was meant to be in lovely chilly February but is now in June. So maybe the warm weather acclimatisation needs to be ramped up. Also Iβm toying with the idea of a trail marathon (the Shere 42) in August, Iβm just waiting to hear whether the organisers close the finish line at a time for βproperβ runners to have all finished or if they keep it open until stupid-oβclock for slow overweight novices. π€π
Wow well done! Running three days in a row must be a challenge in itself! Oh go for trail marathon, i feel you can just enjoy a nice walk if needed ...
I didnβt really think about it being a challenge to run three days in a row when I signed up. I just thought, I can run 27k in one session so two sixteens wonβt be so hard and a 10k is just a breeze. With hindsight I was being a bit dim. I did find the first two races as easy as Iβd hoped, but today is my first ever third day and itβs just knocked me to pieces. For the first time since c25k I was actually finding myself getting tired even on downhill bits!
Mine's 46 too, but that's less impressive for a guy than for a lady. My recent "short" runs have led to a higher HR, which is probably why it's plateaued at that level.
My plan for the coming weeks is to gradually increase the weekend runs up to 15km and stay there until I've done the 10km event in early July. And work on those tight hamstrings etc.
I was having a great run of training but this afternoon I bashed my knee on my sonβs bed as I was helping him move into his new house in Manchester. I have to drive back tomorrow and Iβm limping and thereβs a lump coming up, Just my luck π. Oh and check out what Garmin did to my VO2 Max last time out π€·ββοΈ
It must be because my watch has locked onto my cadence again. Hopefully nothing more sinister as I didnβt feel too bad during the session.
I have a love hate relationship with that Garmin π The knee is bruised and a little sore but swelling is much less thanks. I will hopefully try a run later today if I get back to London in time. π
Ah roseabi! Thank you for the post. Not told off by Garmin but by tired legs this morning. They felt like lead. Too much weekend wine, second vaccine and recovery needed. Thankfully not too many days feel like this. Iβm on 10 weeks to go on the NRC HM training plan. Iβve allowed extra wiggle room though. There will be less running this week to allow for longer walks and a catch up week next. Not sure how it will work- but it should.
Iβm not going to lie; I like a glass of wine at the weekend but it doesnβt help with running. Iβm going to have to think about cutting it down π€¨ ... Maybe next week xx
After a really good spell my running is a bit rubbish atm. Life is getting in the way and my routine has gone to pot. I started to get odd pains and niggles and think they might be caused by my new shoes. The juryβs still out but when I run in my old pair everything settles down π mmmnnnnn π€
Anyway Iβm keeping mileage down to see if I can figure this out. I think I need a good sports massage but that canβt happen for a few weeks yet for various reasons.
Hello roseabi. Mr Garmin has done something very silly and told me I have the fitness of an excellent 20 year old. I fear for 20 year olds if that is the case.
With the cancellation of vitality London 10k , Iβve got no races planned until the Great South Run in October. There may be an 8 mile in September but I will not sign up for it until closer to the time. I was hoping that things would start opening up again, but now fear the opposite will happen. My home parkrun has not yet been given permission to start, despite similar prom runs being on. But I think that PCC is using the break of parkruns to change the status quo. They did get regular complaints , despite it being only 1 hr a week. So it will probably return but maybe with a change of route.
I will continue to motivate myself by extending distance again.
Yes I was pleased to see B&H had approved yours. I think all councils have been handling it as a brand new event which involves putting it up to the safety committee, and meetings are at certain times of the month. Elections last month did not help either. But we will get there.
Ha! My Suunto doesnβt tell me anything, which is just fine by me.
Iβve got a plan waiting in the wings now, that aligns to the way Iβve been running. It starts later this month. I was inspired by Joβs epic 50k last week and so tried an impromptu 42k run on Saturday, keeping it casual and steady throughout. It went surprisingly well and though a bit sore afterwards, I ran again yesterday and it felt good. Also retired my old Speedgoats with 1000k and picked up a new pair of Hoka Torrents. So far so good. They felt light and responsive. Maybe a bit moreso than the βgoats but they are also brand new with somewhat thinner l, stiffer soles. Amazing grip though. Also they are dayglo orange which is the only colour that was in stock.
Hi rosebi, Iβm 20 years old too. Thatβs about as true as my relative effort being 206 the other day! It was 26 after my 10k yesterday, and sometimes itβs 1 or even 0 after yoga! Thanks for that! Garmin just picks random numbers I think ..... π I never get an over reaching message. If I did. Iβd fall over laughing! Mincing maybe!
Hi roseabi ...Iβm still plodding on with Jeff Gallowayβs HM training...only on week 8 but did my longest run EVER of 13.1kms the other day..oh my hips did ache!! But they were fine the day after..just my knees and ankles that suffered for a couple of days, think my faithful β cloudsβ have run the distance now so it could be new shoes time π
Hi roseabi and all I had a great (and managed to get up all the hills!)trail run(with tea and cake afterwards!) last week but my 5k to end the COGH felt really hard and slow. I have a hm next Sunday but just aiming to get round and enjoy the day. Various foot and leg niggles going on! Off out on a trail run this morning!
Hello roseabi and VRBs! There's very little running happening here right now - just 5.5k and 10k this week - as it's exam season. Not so much a rest as long intense days, short nights, and lots of driving. My maratrail plan has me scheduled to do a 14-mile run today, not sure I have the energy. There again I've not done a long run for four weeks and if I don't today, I'm unlikely to have chance for another week. Argh guilt, guilt! Will see how I feel later. π
I didn't run until 17.00hrs roseabi , and it was still around 16Β°. However your idea of doing two shorter longer runs made me feel it was worth seeing what happened, as I could always add on more tomorrow. Result: 23.2k, 756m elevation, and a new HM PB - by all of 15 seconds, but I'll take it! So huge thanks to you for pushing me to get out there! π
