Thank you for all the Pompom cheers on Friday! I see we have quite a few race reports from the weekend, I shall peruse them later after my run. In the meantime - way to go, runners!!! 😍
I saw a review of some new Hoka hiking boots - don't they look crazy??!! They come with a warning not to drive or walk downstairs while wearing them 😗 This part of the article tickled me:
The silhouette of the TenNine is so outlandish that Hoka actually had testers wear darkened sunglasses so they couldn’t see the shoes before they tried them. They had biomechanists help testers onto the treadmills to safely perform the tests. “We wanted to gauge the experience versus the emotional response,” Rosario says. “Some of the shoes were really out there.”
Do you have something you love despite its weird appearance? Your spouse perhaps? 😂 I have just got some new water bottles with very long drinking tubes on them - they are fabulous to use, but I do catch myself wondering what the people I pass think of them!
As always, if you're new here, or just browsing through the community posts, this is a great place to introduce yourself and let us know how you are doing. You’ll find plenty of support and knowledge from your fellow runners here.
Happy running, strength-ing, and resting everyone!

What happens if you come across steps on your hiking route, like these I negotiated yesterday? Do you have to carry an alternative pair of boots in your knapsack? In other news, at the weekend I did 10 miles for the first time since Christmas Eve. Toilet stops remain a problem.
In other more exciting news, I need some new shoes. Unable to visit a shop, I have ordered nine styles in two different sizes to try at home!
Oh I really missed toilets on my HM yesterday! You can carry drinks but you can’t carry a toilet 🤣! And there were always too many people around to use a bush!
I did a "spokes of a wheel" type route so as never to be too far from home. Unfortunately real life races don't tend to be planned like that. Imagine the chaos at the hub!
That’s a good idea. You could have a circle of portaloos in the middle 🤔 I like that idea! But you’re right it probably would be chaos, especially with the amount of cleaning everything has to go through these days.
Oh I couldn’t do 21km without a loo TailChaser 😱 I managed 11km this morning by using the loo just before my run. Fortunately there are lots of loos on our route.
I was amazed I did 42km without a loo ... I even drove home before I eventually went to the loo! I'd researched the route well and knew where every possible loo was, but obviously didn't drink enough!
That’s amazing. I don’t think I could. It’s a fine line this hydration thing isn’t it? I thought I’d try the hydration vest as the pressure of the full flipbelt sometimes makes me feel I want the loo when I don’t really.
I absolutely didn't think I could either. But I don't think my running buddy was keen to stop so I just sort of ran on past the feeling. Probably not recommended! I'm supposed to be doing over 50k with her in September ...
How did you manage that?! My loo delaying is better than it was pre-Covid but it’s still nowhere near your standard! I suppose the incessant rain helped with your hydration though so maybe you didn’t need to drink?
No, I don’t know how I did it either Dexy. In normal times the leisure centre at the halfway point would have been open. I’m definitely going to have to plan the next one better.
Those steps remind me of Jacob’s Ladder in Cheddar L-L. Absolutely brutal, all 274 of them. I couldn’t even walk up without a breather, and some people run all the way!
Haha I'd be sure to fall off those and twist an ankle 😱. I always love myself for what I've achieved when I get back from a run but rarely love my weird appearance (wild hair, red face and the rest!!!). I took my flipbelt and larger bottle out for 10 miles on Saturday - that midriff bulge simply adds to the weirdness, but I was very glad of the drink all the same. I'd like to find a comfy hydration vest that I don't think looks weird on me ... but that's a work in progress for now. Happy running everyone.
I love the Skins unisex hydra vest . Black and close fitting but impossible to buy now unless you can find one on eBay Lass who won my fave marathon wore one It looked fab 😍 It was a serviced marathon so she didn’t need the kitchen sink mind you
That’s my issue with flipbelts linda9389 ! The spare tyre look! I also spend too much time faffing getting things in and out! 😳
I wore my 2 small bottle clip on belt for my HM on Sunday which isn’t quite as bad, especially as I was able to secrete it under my jacket! I’ve learned how to swivel it round for easy access! 😅 I also have a hydration vest but I only take that on long runs when it’s really hot. Plus I thought I’d look weird wearing it on the common where I see the usual dog walkers - they weren’t to know how far I was running, and might think it was overkill! 😅
Hi roseabi and running friends! I ran my fastest ever 5K along the promenade at Bognor Regis on Saturday - 26:49 according to Strava, which I’ll happily take! There was a lot of wind but also lots of shingle to run through/over/around so I think it all evened out in the end😊Yesterday I ran another 11K looking at a route I’d plotted out for my HUHM on 28 March. The distance was about what I’d calculated so I’ve now got 20Km of the route sorted. I might have to improvise the other 1.1 km, maybe taking in a bit of the Bognor Parkrun course?🤔
My aim is for the HM to complete my LEJOG 🏴🏴challenge too, so I’ll have run 874 miles in 7.5 months if all goes to plan🙂🤞
I’m even beginning to think what I’ll do to celebrate, maybe an ice cream 🍦😋 on the promenade if the weather’s even half decent😃👏
Thanks Dexy5, I expect there’s an element of that, and generally there’s less traffic of course. Surprisingly Croydon is quite hilly too so it’s going to be a bit of a shock to my poor little legs when I go home for good!😳
I got an email to say my LEJOG4 goodies are on the way! I half wish I could have restrained myself and ended on a HM too, but my desire to not let the other Jill pip me to the post was too strong! 😅 You’ll definitely deserve at least an icecream when you’re done David_G . 😀
Those shoes are very weird. Recipe for disaster I think. I did a very short run on Sunday despite planning a 18km ....just wasn't feeling right so didn't push it. Here's how I looked weird. I had new leggings that I thought were blue but came as quite green turquoise. That's fine but add my fluorescent jacket (it was raining) and yes I looked like a dazzling daffodil running up the lane 😂 Luckily I went steady so didn't add a red face. I think I have my HM route and have just decided to embrace the hills (extra jelly babies needed) and run local. Then I heard you should aim to finish at least .5 km away from home so you walk to cool down properly...
I like to have a little walk at the end of my runs - try it out and see how it works for you! The only problem I find in winter is that sometimes I 'cool down' a little bit too much 😂
I'm trying to get the balance right between getting back into training and overdoing it and getting injured again - trying to find that sweet spot is tricky. Last week I lost a few days because I'd been overdoing the hamstring exercises to the point where I had a tightly knotted left leg... all seems better now but very frustrating at the time. Did a nice 10k at the weekend without problems, including a 5k which, while I didn't go all out, was still my 3rd fastest, so fingers crossed things are on the mend now.
I'm enjoying being able to get out for a walk in the daylight during the walking day - I've just got back from a 10k walk through my Monday catch up meetings, which keeps my brain moving and gets me a bit further towards John O'Groats. Plus between meetings I managed to squeeze in two short runs on segments I'm chasing for my running club strava legends competition!
Hi. I actually like the look of those trainers, but have a feeling they wouldnt like me!!!
Ive just opted in to the HU10k, sounds interesting. thanks.
years ago bought some purple big wedge shoes, my ex partner hated them😂.... I wear them for gigs (in the days we could go to gigs) as they can sometimes give me a better view. OH calls them my Mr Men shoes ! When I'm running Im sure I look very odd most of the time, as its more comfort and weather that decides and not what matches!
Gosh they’re a “look” aren’t they? Not sure if it’s one I would, or could, wear! 😳 I know I’d fall over for starters!
As for my own weirdness, I have to admit to being a massive Crocs fan (I know) and I have 2 pairs. One from first time round in blue, now used for gardening and wearing after muddy runs etc, and another pair which my daughters bought for me last summer which are (in my opinion) lush. They’re pink floral Liberty print ones and I try not to wear them outside. I’ve put it out there!
Running wise, all good here. First of 2 HMs in March run yesterday. LEJOG4 finished a week ago. 2 medals on their way, so happy days! 🏅🏅
I have Croc flip flops which I LOVE! I also have some Oofos flipflops - recovery shoes, very bouncy - and they are the BEST after a long achy, burning feet kind of run. Not weird at all!!!
I can’t see me getting over a stile in those roseabi 😂. I think I’ll stick to my walking shoes, which also blend with the countryside a bit better. The hokas will be scaring the local wildlife.
I’ve had 3 days off because of vaccination on Friday. No adverse effects apart from an achy, heavy arm which is fine today and a bit of weariness. I dint really know what to expect today but I thought I would wear my hydration vest to start getting used to it before the hot weather. 500 mil was far too much water in the bladder for whatever I would do but air expelled so no sloshing. I started at a steady 7.50 into the wind then turned at 2k with a pace of 7.35 - 7.40. In km 7 I walked 250m and as fine until the 10th km when I did a bit more walking. An 11th km got me home with an overall average pace of 8.00 min/km.
My T-shirt was soaked under the vest but it was a good exercise and did allow me to carry all my goodies in easy to reach pockets.
I’ll do a nice short run in a few days .
My quest was to reach 13k by the end of the month but having got to 12 earlier I might just see how I feel with each run. There is no rush to get back to 10 miles.
Glad your vaccination didn’t affect you much Dexy5 . Mr Cheeky and I are having ours tomorrow, so I’ll have a short run in the morning and then have a couple of days off. I’m curious if me having had covid will make a difference. 🤷♀️
You’ll get back to 10 miles with no problem! I hope we can run together at the GSR again. 🥰
Me too cheeky. I’ll try and speed up at the beginning and you speed up at the end and we’ll have a PB 😂
Good luck with your vaccination. Your antibodies might start attacking it but it seems to effect different people in very different ways. UTS had full blown flu symptoms and is still not fully recovered. But he’s still glad he had it.
I love my Hoka Maf's but they are like strapping anvils to your feet when you first put them on! Once you get used to them they are lush and the trails just melt away....saying that don't fancy those beasties 😆🤣🤣🤣
I'm more a poster on the Bridge to 10K than here, but I'm now getting more into the sort of running distances covered here. For example, yesterday I ran 15km. Another 10 minutes of running could have earned me the 10 mile badge.
And in contrast with the shoes in your picture above, I'm doing it all in zero drop, minimalist toe shoes with a stack height of about 5mm max.
According to Garmin Connect, I've done 460km in this pair so far.
Actually, I have a pair of minimalist shoes, Vivobarefoot, but I cannot run in them sadly. They are very nice to walk in though! Apparently the CEO of Vivobarefoot said that their shoes shouldn't be ran in, which rather sealed their coffin for me! I like a tiny bit of cush in my shoes - Hoka though, they go way too far!!!
I am a Hoka fan, but they just look bizarre! Designed to stop people who can touch the ground with their finger tips without bending their legs getting too smug? I wonder what heel drop they have built into them? I have temporarily swapped over to my 10mm drop La Sportivas to get some support for a dicky Achilles; don't know what these Hokas would do for the pain! In terms of weird attire, I do not get attached to artefacts as a rule, but I can be inexorably drawn to a couple of very well worn old hoodies which offer warmth and security which goes beyond the material from which they are made; sartorial comfort blankets....I probably look really scruffy in them, but who cares?
Hah! I am a Hoka fan too but these would make Moon Boots from the 80s look conservative
I am secretly looking for a new pair of Hoka road shoes. Want to try the new Mach 4s. The Speedgoats are starting to show some wear and tear too. Also would love to try Altras out but I worry about the zero drop achilles thing.
Runningwise, just ticking along. Downloaded a plan to start training in mid May but otherwise business as usual. Its been cold then warm now cold again. Ah March!...Happy running everyone.
Not run far from home this week as I’ve had an up set stomach and barely made it home twice. So still running but not far. Bit miffed as I wanted to get some practice runs in for our spring HM challenge. Best laid plans ey 🙄
Ha ha 🤣 I must be the only one who loves the Hoka boots! They just make me happy. Oh to be a designer for Hoka. What fun! Sadly, they don’t meet my desire to move to zero drop in the future so someone else needs to buy them Tasha99 ?
I tried three pairs of Hoka’s on last week. One was really odd. Big flat footprint like a clown shoe. It was narrow though and pinched all over despite the deck all way round
I really liked one of them but the guy said “no” as I ran sideways like a crab in it apparently ☺️
Yes, I've seen those long tubes and thought the same!!
My hubby always laughs at my visor... which I really don't think it deserves but he's right, it's always slightly squint... but then that could be my head 🤪🤣
