With an HM booked for September and a Marathon in October, thought I'd book an Ultra for August.
People who've done it before have told me it's much more relaxed than a Marathon. I'm aiming for a run / walk strategy with a target of finishing before the course closes (which gives me 12 hours). I figure I could complete it at my walking pace so a run / walk should get me round in time.
Soon as the current icy conditions have cleared, I'm going to start ramping up my walking distance. The course passes fairly close to where we live so, once I've sorted out a pair of trail shoes, I'll be able to practice on some of the route.
I think this is going to be quite a challenge but, with the right preparation, I should be in with a reasonable chance.

Thanks Cheeky. Once the risk of ice goes away, I'm thinking of using walking to build up my distance. Although, I guess some run / walk training would be more like what's required and might save me some time.
Think I'm going to have to be clear in my head about each training session so there's no dithering about running or walking the hills.
Very exciting!!! Could be very warm in August! Which one is it? We've booked a local one for May and last night I was looking at a run/walk plan, taking into account the climbs, to see what we'd need to do in order to achieve 6.5 hours (my buddy's goal, not mine). I pretty much came to the conclusion it's not likely 🤣. 6h40s was my very best effort and that assumes no food stops and no loo 🤣.All the ultra training hould make your Sept HM seem like a walk in the park 😊 Good luck!!!
It's the Green Man Ultra round Bristol. 45 miles with a 12 hour cutoff. I'm thinking of training for an 11 hour finish. Hopefully that will make the event a bit more relaxed than if I'm right on the cutoff time.
I've found that I can run in the heat around here without problems so that aspect should be OK. Just need to ensure that I'm carrying plenty of water (plus rehydration tabs). I'm definitely going to need a hat and some all day sunblock, although it's Britain, so waterproofs might also be needed!
Which one are you doing in May? Do you know of a good source of plans?
Having entered the Bath HM on behalf of the NSPCC, I have access to an organisation that provides training plans. They offer to customize the plan to cover any additional events but I think they might charge extra to extend to an Ultra.
Wow, that's looooonnnngggg! Mine is the Threshold Dulux Revolution Ultra Trail which climbs through the Chilterns to start, then follows the Thames path to end at Windsor just over 32 miles. I know most of the final 35k of the route already from cycling and running; it's the hilly bit that will be new to me😱. We're hoping it won't be toowarm - though again, mid May anything could happen!I'm going to use the twelve week training plan that comes with the event trails.london-revolution.co... I would have liked to do more training, but am still not quite at 10k after a couple of months off, so timing is forcing my hand. I know BethMay is following a runners world ultra plan which is over a slightly longer time and she seems happy with it.
Good luck for your Ultra Marathon in August SkiMonday, as for the HM in September and Marathon in October, these two could still be virtual, still no guarantee that things will be back to normal this year, I wish you all the very best for those 3 runs. 🏃🏾 👍
I'm banking on the events going ahead as planned although I do realise there's a risk that they won't.
I'm aiming to keep my solo runs under three hours so, whilst a virtual HM is doable, at my pace it rules out a virtual marathon. There again, since I'm going to be training for an ultra, I'm going to have to go over the three hours anyway.
Good luck with that, some serious training coming! 👍🏻💪🏻😁 you'll need to manage your fuel and hydration well, the rest is really just determination and strength of mind. Your body can do it, you just need to convince your head.
People I know who've done it in previous years have said that it's easier, or, at least, less stressful than a Marathon.
I'm counting on good physical preparation to put me in the right mental state.
Hopefully, experience during training along with advice from sources like this forum will allow me to work out a good nutrition plan. I've already got the hula hoops but I think I'll need some more before the event.
