Since beginning the 80-20 running plan I've been enjoying my running again. I dont put any pressure on myself to complete any goals and just go out and run. Sometimes long runs Sometimes short BUT when I do go for a long run (anything over 12 km) I get a pain in my right knee.why can I run comfortably up to about 13 km but then the pain starts. I can manage the discomfort up to about 15 km but any longer and I have to pull up. Its all very frustrating.
WHY???????: Since beginning the 80-2... - Fun Beyond 10K & ...
WHY???????
That does sound frustrating! Obviously the further you go, the more any weakness is likely to show. Have you tried gait analysis? are your shoes still suitable? could you see the GP and try to get a physio referral?
Thanks for your reply. It seems strange that it occurs at exactly the same distance on every long run. My shoes are fine as I rotate them (I have too many shoes!!!) And my gait was analysed quire a while ago. I think getting a GP appointment might be a bit like spotting a unicorn in the present climate 😆😆 so it looks like runs of 10 k or less for the time being....
Could you see a physio privately perhaps? it's never a cheap option, but just one appt may be enough to get to the bottom of it and know what you need to work on to stop it happening. In normal times it can be possible to get an appointment at unis where they do physio courses - an appt can be free or very cheap, as it counts towards student's clinical hours. However, I'm not sure if that is happening at the moment.
Thats weird it should still happen with rotating your shoes. In your rotation do you have some shoes that are different enough from one another? For me I had knee issues, and switching from my thick soled Hoka Cliftons to my light thin soled Saucony Kinvaras made an instant difference. The Hokas had really high arches which pushed the foot out and strained the IT band a little (in my case) and the Kinvaras seemed to work at a different angle which helped that issue. Also have you tried stopping and stretching a little at 12 or so? Maybe walking a bit and then getting back up to pace?
It probably is an IT band problem as I have suffered with that in the past. I recently started indoor cycling on some of my non running days so wonder if that has triggered something? In general my shoes are all pretty much the same that I have been using lately. About an 8mm drop on most but I have some saucony freedom that are a 4mm drop which I will use on my next run. I also have some kinvara 10 which I hate but will have another go with those....
I found I exacerbated my IT and caused another issue by overtraining on the bike while injured. In my case I needed full rest on off days for it to heal up. But we are all different.
You may need a physio. In contrast to Decker, the low drop with Hoka fixed my knee issues 🤣
Haha I’m not surprised. Since using my Hoka Speedgoats, all my knee issues have dissapeared! Who knows what that means? 😂
Omg aren’t they the best shoes EVER! I got you the point where I couldn’t even walk down a little slope. Swapped to Hoka Speedgoat and BOOM! Running down mountains I went overnight! Therefore I spend most of my time on here ranting about the importance of the correct shoe drop 🤣 I now have 5 pairs of Hoka 😶
I had two ultra friends that swear by Hoka, so this year I caved in and now have two pairs. I agree the Speedgoats are the best shoe I've ever owned. The Cliftons gave my my best HM time ever. Now Hoka if you are listening to our posts, I am a size 10. 🤣
I’ve been running in Saucony Kinvara 10’s and Hoka Clifton 7’s. I’ve just bought Hoka Evo Mafate’s to start trail running. As I seem to have all the kit for an ultra, I probably should start training for more than 2miles 🤣
Two pairs are nearly ready for the bin. I have a pair of gaviota and arahi and like to alternate. Have you been on their site lately? There are no sizes at all. I’m wondering what’s going on. I’ve emailed twice and have no decent reply as to when they’re getting stock in. It’s annoying.
