Flu jabs and running don’t mix ( for me anyway).

Just back from a torch light 12k start to my HR build up. My average HR was 10 bpm up for the slowish pace and distance and VO2 max docked me a point. I have had a similar experience post flu jab in the past, so decided to find out whether there is a correlation; apparently there is!! Some people experience a small rise in temperature post jab, and each degree increase adds 10bpm to heart rate....or so Mr Google says! So I am blaming the jab for this run; note to self....have a few days off after next year’s jab!

Ha BC66, perhaps you should have left your run for 48 hours after your Flu jab, I got my annual flu jab last Tuesday at exactly 10.50am as on the letter for my appointment, when I got to the place for my jab there was no queue and got the jab immediately at at 10.50,

The next morning at 7.40 I ran a 8K with no effects whatsoever of the previous day jab, the effects of certain inoculations vary from person to person.

Yep... probably only affects old softies like me!! 🙂

I ran another 8K this morning 50 seconds slower than last Wednesday, last Wednesday it was just under a hour, this morning it was 34 seconds over a hour, excuse, there were several icy patches mixed in with a lot of wet leaves, I did not want to fall, hence the slightly slower time.

Falls are definitely to be avoided Al; one is enough for me this year. Well done on your 8k. Sometimes we run more slowly for no particular reason; it’s just in my nature to look for causes.

Good run though BC, 12k is 12k however you slice it! Plus you ran in torchlight! I’ve still never done that. 😱

An advantage of being an old bloke cheeky....why would anybody bother attacking me?

I love a dark run - and in fact, have no choice during the week now that the days are shorter. I love popping on my chest light and pounding the local (safe) pavements. 😀🏃🏽‍♀️🔦👍 Sometimes I use the 'Zombies - run!' App too - even better!😉😱💀🤣

Interesting, and as AlMorr points out, the effects of vaccination vary from person to person. I have read that recent research actually shows that exercise after a flu jab can actually help strengthen the immune response to the vaccination👍 - I think because exercise itself stimulates our immune system. I'm having mine on Saturday so will see how I feel - wouldn't want to run if my temperature was raised though.

It was looking at my resting heart rate which made me realise something was wrong. It is usually 51 but is currently about 70! Could be the US election of course!

I'm still waiting for my flu jab BC, so have made a careful note!

Probably just a small number of sensitive souls affected JP!

As a mere 59 year old I haven’t had a flu jab, but I also haven’t had a run since Saturday. Instead I have had a lovely pre-lockdown visit to mum and dad’s in Cumbria, delicious lunch near Keswick and a drive through a beautiful autumnal Lake District 😊 Must get back into the lockdown exercise routine!

That sounds much nicer than a flu jab!

I’m not “that age” either Sandie but I’ve paid for a flu jab for the past four years or so since I took a double-virus and was so ill I thought I was going to die. It was horrific so I’ve had one ever since to give me some protection. There is a theory that it also provides some protection against Corona.....

I am with you IP...,I definitely am not saying don’t have it...it is a must for me. Just commenting on a minor impact on me and which means I should have learned from the past and avoided running for a couple of days afterwards!!

Irishprincess profile image

And of course every year the jab contains different ingredients from the year before so we might feel fine one year but not the next... 🙄

Just a youngster! The Lake District is wonderful. Lots of opportunities for the odd hill run 🙂 but I have never been over there with my running gear. Lots of walks dramatic views and Molly friendly pubs. Great idea to fit in a visit to parents.

I grew up in Penrith so Ullswater was my childhood playground. Still love it and the autumn colours are just gorgeous. I always have a weekend with mum and dad late November, but anticipated lockdown and brought it forward this year. Hadn’t seen them since a socially distanced outdoor half day in June so it was about time and, until today, we were both in Tier 1 so I could stay. Still want to do Keswick Parkrun at some point!

I had it several years on the trot when my asthma was bad but I had one year I had a really bad reaction, I'll never (voluntarily) have it again.

I only started having it after actually having the flu one year which was awful but I survived. I'll take my chances. 🤣

Definitely don't expect optimal performance straight after it. 👍🏻

I will definitely keep having the jab...I have been on the list for years with asthma etc. Even more important this year. This is a pretty mild short lived reaction; resting heart rate is back to normal this morning. Solution for me is to have a couple of days run free post injection and keep whatever protection the vaccine offers.

Sounds lovely BC 🙂 I’ve read that exercising immediately after a flu jab accelerates its benefits. I ran the afternoon I had mine and felt no difference although my arm was painful this year and the jab site swelled to the size of a tennis ball 😩

I guess we all react differently.

Beachcomber66 profile image
Beachcomber66AdministratorHalf Marathon

Exactly. Big picture, I have chronic mild asthma, have had the flu jab for years and kept on top of flu. Minor disruption to my running schedule is nothing compared to that!!

My other half is blaming not being well this morning on his flu jab yesterday. It's definitely nothing to do with him cycling into Bristol, sitting in a pub garden and drinking copious amounts of beer at 50p a pint with a couple of retired work colleagues. 🤔🤨

Self inflicted wound then!🙂

Well done though. A really good distance there to get under your belt 😊
