Well that’s me off running for a bit

Chest infection/antibiotics. Cannot tell you how frustrating this is! It looks as if it was coming on before the Oxford half. Can’t run for more than ten minutes without my chest closing up and feel as if I’ve got a brick lodged between throat and sternum. So probably a few days rest for me. I will see how it goes ☹️☹️☹️

Grrr... But it is awesome you managed the HM while not at your best. Hopefully only 1 or 2 weeks recovery.

Thank you 😊 I’m hoping to be better by the end of the week, since it was gradually improving anyway c

It's at times like these when this forum needs an "unlike" function!

Sorry to hear this, young Flick. I hope you feel better soon xxx

in reply toMikeJones68

Thank you lovely Mike. I’m determined to be better by next weekend!! Xxx

I am so sorry for what you have just told us Flick, yes, you will just have to rest from running for at least a week, get professional advice about when you can restart your runs, in the meantime just relax and read all the posts here on Healthunlocked.

in reply toAlMorr

Thank you Alan. I think

A few days should do it. I never get respiratory tract infections, so hopefully it won’t take too long 😊

So sorry you’re not feeling well Flick! 🤗 A few days rest will no doubt have you back on track. I’m sure it will be worth it! Look after yourself. Wishing you a speedy recovery! ❤️

in reply toFabulous450

Thank you Fabsy. I don’t get il often so I’m hoping it will pass through fast! Xxx

Snap. I could not walk from one side of the room to the other the last couple of days , let alone run, without gasping for breath. Had this virus for nearly 4 weeks now and my inhalers weren’t touching it. Got given oral steroids ( 6 tablets every morning for 5 days) and told to double up on my preventer dose morning and night. And use the blue one every 4 hours too. )

It’s been quite scary. So I shall be making sure I’m completely well before venturing out running.

Make sure you do, too Flick. Hope you are better soon - sending virtual hugs .

in reply tolimberlou

I’m really sorry this is happening to you too. The antibiotics are already helping, and the last time I had anything like this was years ago, so fingers crossed. I knew it wasn’t my usual dog allergy thing as it didn’t improve when I was away from the house, and like you I was feeling light headed xx

limberlou profile image

Yeah I kept thinking it’ll go soon but then I’d my sinuses would block and then they’d clear and my throat would hurt again and then that would go but the cough and wheezing went on and on. And so very weary all the time which is not me.

in reply tolimberlou

Really sorry you had all that additional stuff. For me it is literally just my chest. no sore throat, no nose stuff, just rasping from my collar bone down xx

Oh Flick, sorry to hear this, but SO glad you got seen by your GP. Take as many days as it needs to recover (don’t forget antibiotics can wipe you out a bit too). Running will of course be waiting for you (though of course I get your frustration!) Wishing you a quick recovery my lovely. xxx

in reply toSadie-runs

Thank you dearest. The antibiotics are the same as I had for the infected tattoo in the summer and those acted really fast and didn’t make me feel bad. So frustrated!!!! Xxx

Thank you. And I haven’t been able to cheat as ten minutes running and my chest closes up. Boo xx

😔 Sad news Flick but if rest is needed it is needed. It is amazing how quickly we heal though with a bit of tlc. Gentle walks maybe and a few good movies and hopefully all will be well again soon. Christmas movies start soon..... 🙈🤪🤶 My guilty pleasure 😂😂🎄 xx

in reply toClairecandothis

Thank you Claire. I have to dog walk every day so I won’t be totally idle. And I’m watching several telly things: just finished Dublin Murders, watching His Dark Materials, World on Fire, just watched Jack Ryan series two, every episode of Catastrophe, am waiting for series four of The Man in the High Castle, and am ploughing my way through Escape to the Perfect Town. Can’t wait to be running again though. Marcothon begins again beginning of December xx

Clairecandothis profile image

Wow. That is an impressive list! I'd hate to have an enforced rest so I genuinely empathise with you, but best to rest and get better and then run. You should be great for December though? Xx

I’ve just binge watched Luther, I have 2 episodes left of series 4 of Outlander ( read all the books several times over the last few years) ,partway through His Dark Materials ( read the books too), I have full run of my daughter’sNetflix account and her Amazon Prime too. 😜. And a load of knitting and crochet to do so I’m set for a while.

Oh no! Sorry to hear this Flick. Be kind to yourself and sensible about getting back out there. I had a big lecture from the doc back in June about the perils of running post chest infection if you're not quite 100 %. Virtual flowers and a hug to cheer you up: 💐🤗 X

in reply toSlinkymalinki

Thank you 😊❤️ My GP runs so she understands. Thank you for the flowers xxx

Thank you lovely. It was slowly getting better by itself, but I’m glad to have something to clear it up quicker. Xx

Thanks Jo. I'm hoping a week will do it! Feel vile today, but that's the antibiotics working. Still have to dog walk though xx

Awww look after yourself chicken soup books chocs n telly time. you’ll soon be back out there just resting up for a bit.

in reply tosnailface

Your the second person to recommend chicken soup - it will have to be a vegan alternative 😂 but I’m onto it! And thank you xx

BarbieW profile image
BarbieW in reply to

In that case a nice hearty winter vegetable should do the trick! Just as comforting and healthy too!

Horrid to have to, but do take your time to get well again.

in reply toBarbieW

Thank you. I just devoured buckwheat pancakes with maple syrup, lime juice and fresh peaches. Did the trick 😊 xx

misswobble profile image
misswobbleMarathon in reply to

chicken soup is a cure. It's official Sommat to do with bone marrow probably so a vegan one won't hack it

A spicy veg soup with lentils and or peas and beans, with lots of chilli and hot spices will perk you up though for sure

in reply tomisswobble

People keep offering me these concoctions. I have to say here this is ONLY on my chest. I have no other symptoms and haven't had: no sore throat, no nose problems. Most of these remedies won't touch it. I am not a fan of antibiotics and will avoid them if there is any other alternative, but they are doing their job and things are easing bit by bit.

Oh no, poor you. Luckily I haven’t had a cough, sore throat or snotty nose xx

misswobble profile image
misswobbleMarathon in reply toSnuffy_T

I ran with a lousy cough and found I didn’t cough when I ran 😃. I had a tough hill race booked and was facing have to cancel. I ran it and was fine. Running must open up the airways. That’s the only thing I could come up with to explain it I had red hot fish and chips the night before as I read somewhere that’s what opera singers do if they get coughs 😁

Pholcodeine cough lozenges are good but they’re only on prescription now 🤨

I hope you feel better soon 👍

in reply tomisswobble

Thank you. Getting better bit by bit. I think the fact I had no other symptoms but tight chest, fatigue etc the reason I had this for so long. My resting heart rate had shot up about ten days before Oxford half, so I think it was coming on then
