10 Mile Run in the Rain 🌧🌧🌧

Well now! Where to post? It’s more than 10km so I have the nerve to post it in here! I’ve been gradually increasing the time on my long runs, but this one was a bit of a step up for me. Last Saturday I ran 12km (plus an initial 1km where the watch bombed out).

I took it in stages and was planning maybe an extra 1 - 2K - but you know what happens 🙂

Usually I start my runs just before dawn, but today the weather was atrocious. I thought I would postpone. A few hours later, the rain had eased. It wasn’t that cold so - game on! Donning my waterproof jacket I set off bravely. I have a lovely circular 8km route, but today I thought I’d tag on an extra 4km at the beginning, which includes a stretch of single track road by the river and the infamous Deadend Track, which seems to go on forever whatever speed you’re running at! (That’s it in the photo.) I tackle the circular route and come back into the village at 12K. It’s warm now, although still raining, but I remove my jacket and tie it round my waist. I have some of my sports drink as I’m starting to get tired. 15K and decision time. Oh for goodness sake, Julia - what’s 1km between friends? Well, a very tough km as it turns out - but I did it! Pretty darned slowly, but still did it. Very proud to have run my first 10 miles! 😀😀😀

Congratulations! It’s a great milestone after 10k, so very well done. I know what you mean about some of those long straight roads too...

You have posted that report of your 10 miles run on the correct forum, if you graduate from C25K it's the C25K forum, graduates running for 60 minutes or their first 10K it's on the Bridge 210K forum, for distances of 10 miles, half or full marathon its this forum, The Marathon Running and Support Forum.

Congratulations on completing your first 10 miles, tell the administrators that you have ran 10 miles for the first time, then you will see the words 10miles next to your username, once again well done 😀 🏃🏾 🎓

Wow! You did what! 10 miles! That must have felt amazing! I am smiling and smiling for and with you. You've really broken through! Can't wait for my first 10 mile run, although I think it might be a few weeks away yet. Been peeking at this forum, but may not post on here yet!

I still can’t believe I did it! All those long runs certainly work on your stamina. It certainly did feel amazing 🥰

Roxdog profile image
Roxdog10 Miles in reply to Jools2020

Half marathon next then! Even if it is a lone half marathon with all the races etc cancelled! Go for it! You deserve a rest now.

Jools2020 profile image
Jools2020Half Marathon in reply to Roxdog

That’s my aim! But I need to do it gradually. I’m so slow that it means running for a long time, I’ll need to be careful, maybe even speed up a bit. 😊

Roxdog profile image
Roxdog10 Miles in reply to Jools2020

You obviously enjoy these long runs, so I expect you'll gradually speed up! Maybe do a few more 10ks, which will be a cinch for you now! I'm sure you'll get faster, but more importantly carry on enjoying these epic runs which you seem to just do naturally!

Jools2020 profile image
Jools2020Half Marathon in reply to Roxdog

Actually, speeding up on the 10K runs is a great starting point! I do like my long runs. Well, I can’t do ‘fast’ for very long 😊

Roxdog profile image
Roxdog10 Miles in reply to Jools2020

I'm never going to do fast and don't care!

Cmoi profile image

Congratulations! I did something very similar to you 8 days ago (and again this morning, oops): went out for 10k and it turned into 10 miles. I didn't have rain to contend with though, nor endless roads. How ever do you cope with them? I think I prefer my hills!

Jools2020 profile image
Jools2020Half Marathon in reply to Cmoi

Thanks! I love the fens. Not all the roads look like the Deadend Track 😀. I don’t think I could cope with hills!

Well done, way to go! You see, it wasn't that bad after all, eh? One thing about distance running that we cannot change is the weather. We can get whatever is thrown at us. If you run a quick 5K you can dodge the clouds but if you are out there hitting some prolonged mileage then you can get all four seasons, and that's the beauty of it. No bad weather - only bad clothes!

Jools2020 profile image
Jools2020Half Marathon in reply to mrrun

Haha, no, I enjoyed it, but for the last 2 or 3 km I was pushing it. Running 10 miles in the length of time it took me is tiring. I did take a sports drink with me and had that in the second half, that seemed to help. If I’m going to eventually run a HM then I think I might need to speed up a bit.

I’ve been reading your blog about the questions new runners ask and found it very informative.

mrrun profile image
mrrunUltramarathon in reply to Jools2020

Thank you! I find that training muscles is easier than training mind (when going gets tough). If we train intelligently and look after our bodies through rest and diet, we will reach and exceed what we thought we could do. Mind is a different matter and long distance running helped me discover some immensely positive elements that mind under strain can deliver - and push the whole body forward.

It all starts with a question 'Do I want to reach a particular distance', rather than 'Can I....' ;)

Jools2020 profile image
Jools2020Half Marathon in reply to mrrun

I’m going to spend more time reading your posts and blog! I’m already trying to eat more healthily and trying to train intelligently with varied runs. I’m not following a programme, just using common sense and I’m sure I get it wrong sometimes. I do set my sights on a distance, do all the right things towards it, then suddenly sneak it in when perhaps I should have waited a bit longer!

Now... do I want to run a half marathon..?

Awesome! 10 miles is a fantastic achievement and a big one too. Long runs are my favourite, and guess what ..... they make you speed up too. Well done you! 🎉🎉🎉🎉

Jools2020 profile image
Jools2020Half Marathon in reply to cheekychipmunks

Thank you! I’m so pleased! I’ve already got faster, although I don’t think I’m ever going to be really fast - but I did knock 7 minutes off my 5K time after a few weeks of doing long runs. 😃

Ha ha. I know it’s an amazing thing. You probably said the same at 10km. I know I did. I was completely astonished 😃

You’re very nearly at the next distance. You know the one 😁. Slowly, slowly. Easy does it

Jools2020 profile image
Jools2020Half Marathon in reply to misswobble

Oh yes, I know the one 😀. I think I need to speed up a tad. That 10 miles took 2.5 hours. I’ll work on getting a bit faster on my 10K runs first. Gradually, of course 👍

misswobble profile image
misswobbleMarathon in reply to Jools2020

go for the distance rather than the speed I think. Plugging away bit by bit

Building up your body strength as you go.
