I've signed up for a HM!

Last week I ran 10.5km and felt fresh as a daisy at the end, so in a flurry of enthusiasm I signed up for the Brighton HM. I reckon it's not particularly likely to happen what with Covid, but if it doesn't I'll just do it on my own in my town, me and my Garmin.

It's on 28th February, which will be my 1 year and 1 fortnight runniversary. I've got four months to train. My 5k best is 33 mins (flat) and my 10k best (or to be totally honest, my 10k only) is 76 mins (hilly). I'm going to be proud of myself if I manage 8 min kms and finish in under three hours. Apparently it's normal for there to be people running that slowly so even if I'm bringing up the rear I won't be alone.

I'm not sure if I've done something stupid but hey ho, nothing ventured nothing gained.

You have not done something stupid by signing up for the Brighton Half Marathon, it's difficult to say how the Covid situation will be next February, I think we all will still be going around in face masks then, if it does go ahead it probably will be a time trial, runners setting of at intervals, that's been the trend recently, good luck, there are plenty of people who run a HM in more than 3 hours

Well done Magellan, I think you’ll be fine with the HM just as long as you take it slowly and steadily during your training🙂 I took well over 3 hours to finish my first HM and I wasn’t the last finisher🏃‍♂️. It was over 2 laps so the faster runners overtook me on their second laps while I was still on my first!😳 I cheered them as they came past me, and some of them were still at the finish line🏁 when I got there and cheered me over the line! It was a great feeling and all very friendly.

Very best of luck and enjoy the journey!🙂👍

Hi. A very warm welcome to the forum! How exciting - a half marathon is a brilliant achievement and very doable if you're already at 10k. You may want to consolidate that distance for a couple of weeks before pushing on, but you still have plenty of time to train for February.

We currently have an autumn half marathon group running - the next post should be up either today or tomorrow, keep an eye out for it.

There is also a pinned post of all the posts from our last spring half marathon group, including links to topics ranging from choosing a plan to claiming your bling healthunlocked.com/marathon...

You might find some of the information in these posts useful as you continue your journey. Have fun, and do let us know how you're getting along.

Thanks everyone for the support. I'm starting to look forward to it. I have got a training plan for a HM in my Garmin, off to do some run-walk-run today which is something I haven't for a while!
