20 mile Marathon warm up

This morning was the turn of another long run. I've been building distance for a while with lots of 10 mile and HM runs before going 15m and then 17m recently. I remember I was too tired to go for 18 a couple of weeks ago, so settled for 1 less. Today though all went well and I practiced loops of the Humber Bank and extending it by running past the village square which also means past my house. Needed 1 toilet stop which was handy. I've been trying 'Active Root' electrolyte powder in my two small bottles today which went well. I also ate two Mr Kipling country slices (first time I've tried eating on a run) with a couple of gels. It was hard overall, especially from 15 on but I feel more confident now with my virtual London Marathon attempt in 4 weeks. Lots of fluids as I write this and I've just used the foam roller. Average heart rate was 126 so I'm pleased. I listened to lots of podcasts for this run which was unusual for me but a nice change. I haven't followed a plan but just run how I've felt and with the big day a month today I'm feeling ok about it. All my long runs seem to have helped today. I feel really happy.

That’s brilliant running! Well done to you 💪🙂 You sound very much in control and I have no doubt that you’ll do the FM no problem.

I love those country slices but I can’t believe you didn’t scoff the whole packet on that run. I mean, two bites and a slice is gone 🤔

in reply toIrishprincess

😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂

Thank you xx yes they are small! Felt good today but tired at the end. I can always walk a bit at the end on race day too 😁

I’ve often wished Mr Kipling would make a whole cake of those country slices 😋

Then again, perhaps that’s not such a good idea 🙂

in reply toIrishprincess

They are my absolute favourites with a cup of tea ❤ they aren't the same as they used to be but I still adore them.

Yum 😋 Have you ever tried it with a slice of strong cheddar cheese.....?

I haven"t but I love strong cheddar cheese with crackers and red wine

I’ve tried that but I find it a bit dry and not as moist as the slices....

I’ve tried the range I think,.... 🙄

Me too. Can’t remember the last time I had an almond slice, or French fancy. My mum always called them Kunzle cakes 🙂

in reply tomisswobble

Almond slices seem to be cheaper too! I'll get some from Asda next week 🙈🙈

Have a bash at making your own snacks. The peanut power bars are awesome. I only eat them on long runs. You can’t get troughing those willy nilly. You’d have no teef left ☺️

I’ve just been gifted some heathier snacks from Holland. Fig and almond. They’re easy to tote and last for ages in store. They’re made in Spain but my niece gets them via her pal in Holland. They’re made by Anna Luz. Gluten-free and vegan They’re actually labelled as an accompaniment for cheese, which is a bit of an odd serving suggestion for a vegan product 😁.

My fave snack at the hardest most tired stage of the long run is a small bag of Hula Hoops. It’s a life-saver when you’re dying on your arse I save it til about the 22k mark and it revives me for the rest of a 20 miler.

in reply tomisswobble

Oooooh. I've got some in. Who knew?? That'll be my 20 mile treat on race day. What a tip!!

misswobble profile image
misswobbleMarathon in reply to

I tip my head back and empty em in ☺️😁. You do need a swig of drink or two The salt gives your legs a boost 🌪

That tip came to me from the great fell, mountain runner and farming fabled running goddess that is Nicky Spinks 🏃‍♀️💪😃

Brilliant run for you today, 3.54.30 is excellent and you should be very pleased with that time, I have tried to follow that run on relive but there is only a map, not that icon following the route you ran, sometimes with some runs on relive a message come up "unable to make video" or you have not pressed the 'create' icon, nevertheless a big congratulations to you on that brilliant 🏃🏾 👍

in reply toAlMorr

Thank you so much Al. I've just created it. Good luck tomorrow too. I'll be looking out for you.

AlMorr profile image
AlMorrHalf Marathon in reply to

I have just watched it, that is only 6 miles short of a full marathon 🏃🏾.

Tomorrow at 9.30am I will be running my 25th virtual 5K parkrun, which will be my 12th (not) parkrun, it will be run on my more familiar course, not the one I ran on Wednesday or last Saturday.

in reply toAlMorr

I could have gone on if it was absolutely necessary but my time will hopefully come. I need to rest up as I've done 34 and 35 miles over the last two weeks. Those last 6 miles (over an hour's running) will be tough but I'll be tougher. Your 25th virtual park run deserves a celebration!!

25 weeks since the last official Parkrun, next week it will be SIX MONTHS since there was a parkrun, however, good news, my Thursday walking group club resumed yesterday, it was nice seeing all my walking friends again, I told them about my running achievements since March, including the ten mile run and they congratulated me..

This is all fantastic! Great work with all the training GTFC, you have acheived so much already! Although not following a formal plan you seem to have a handle on this....

Good luck with the final month leading up to your FM...I feel very excited for you!

Happy running 🏃‍♂️⭐👌🤞xxx

in reply toBluebirdrunner

Thank you so much. I think if I followed a plan I'd be a bit nervous but doing my own thing I'm super relaxed and I'm doing the miles so all is well so far. Giving myself the best chance with hydration, strengthening and stretching. Just need to stay injury free and then taper off as the weeks go 😊

Amazing distance GTFC absolutely brilliant. Love the fact you took Mr Kipling slices on your run and they obviously worked for you.

Good luck with the virtual London marathon , I have no doubt you'll smash it. 👏👏💪💪

in reply toBuddy34

I thought they'd be easy to eat as they are soft and they were. Hoped I wouldn't get tummy ache and didn't. I'll try the same route and routine next Sunday for my last long one before the day. Hope your running week has been okay after the 10 mile PB 👏👏👏

Buddy34 profile image
Buddy34Half Marathon in reply to

🤣my last post was a 10k pb and yes I'm fine. I ran another 10 miles on the 24th of August and it wasn't raining 🤣.

Got a new Aonijie hydration vest delivered with 2 soft water bottles as i couldn't get used to the belt with 2 bottles . It kept jumping up and down and drove me nuts.

What distance will you go up to before the VLM?😊

in reply toBuddy34

Ooooooooh. I have that vest too with the water bottles! Mine is blue. Got it about a month ago. I've been wearing it to get me used to it on longer runs. They are about 250ml each. I like it as it's reasonable and does the job. The tags keep it nice on you too. Yes, I'm with you on the belts. They hurt my tummy. I put my phone in one pocket on the front and bottle in the other for fairly long runs and then use both bottles at the front and my phone in the back bit for long ones. I only found the zip on the inside of the left side yesterday 🙈🙈🙈.

What colour is yours? Next week I'll do 15-20 miles again then two weeks taper before I do the big one.

Buddy34 profile image
Buddy34Half Marathon in reply to

Great. I also got the blue one with the 2 , 250ml water bottles. Did you get a whistle , i could whistle louder myself 🤣

in reply toBuddy34

Yes!! I love it. I keep a small stone in there I picked up on my first HM run which reminds me I can do it when it gets tough. I do really like the vest and it's comfy. Your back does get sweaty after but it's much more comfy than the belt for me. Let me know how you get on with it. It feels funny at first with your arms when you run but you soon notice it isn't there. SiS gels fit nicely in there too. It's peace of mind really being able to put stuff in.

Past caring about the sweaty look , I sweat buckets 🤣 plenty room for everything.

Wow, well done, I’ve done a 14 mile (23k) so far, aiming for a 30k..... 🤞next week......and that’ll be it......

Mx

in reply toMadge50

That is so awesome!! Well done you. How are you finding the longer runs?

Madge50 profile image
Madge50Marathon in reply to

Thanks, not bad actually, I think I need to slow down just a little bit more, I was really comfy most of the way, it was only the last 1k or so that I felt a bit tired - I also had a bit of a time constraint, so I think that got to me a bit......I did want to try to get to 25k, but I just didn’t have enough time or gas left in the tank.......I hit my target though, which was HM......, I also took a piece of advice I saw about ultra running - run the flats and downhills, walk the inclines....

I did need to stretch at the end of the 23k , but was ok, no different than doing a HM, so note to self - to stretch during the breaks.....especially later......

I’m a bit nervous about getting to the 30k, but that 23k has certainly helped!

You’re going to be fine - you’ve just got to resist the temptation to do more......🏃‍♂️😎......

Exciting init!

Mx

in reply toMadge50

Very! Love how you describe your run. Yes I aim for 12-23 minute mile pace on long runs and if it's a bit less then all is well. I know that last 6m will be tough but we can do it!!

Mr Kiplings - ooo another good idea! I’m partial to a Fondant Fancy myself (tell no one!)

You’re a superb runner - keep it up! 💪😀💥

in reply tocheekychipmunks

Good run mate. You look to be well on course.

I’m into my taper now. Looking forward to an easy 14 on Sunday.

That’s weird isn’t it? Easy 14!

I know! It sounds crazy but you've earned the right to with all your long runs.

Are you still on for the New Forest Marathon? Good luck on Sunday 😊

SlowLoris profile image
SlowLoris in reply to

Yes, still in. The new route looks a bit hilly so I’ll have to revise my pace. As long as I finish it will be a PB though.

Two UTMB points. Not much use to me. Shame I can’t give them to the next finisher like unwanted tokens at a supermarket checkout.

in reply toSlowLoris

Just had to Google that to see what it means. It'll be your first one?

Hi, well done. Sounds like you’ve been preparing in good time. You’ll have the confidence that you’ll complete and with a good time.

I’ve been a bit more compulsive with my decision and hoping that after my usual loop I can have a break, drink and food then go around again.... then again... until the miles are done.

That is a really good idea. I like that. Have you started to practice it in training?

Nope. Only signed up yesterday. Will do a ‘long’ run tomorrow so potentially could try 2 laps then which I suppose would be sensible.

Fantastic run GTFC. You will definitely be ready for your FM and I can’t wait to read your post. HM nearly killed me, so I just can’t imagine running that far!

Well done GTFC, I'm in awe of your heart rate...mine is at its highest on my long runs, average often in the mid 170s.

I'm thinking of giving zone 3 HR training a go, if I can find the patience as I think for a while I'll have to go very slow and often walk!

Well past time you got your Metric Marathon badge, to tide you by until you get the proper one next month 🤞...you've more than earned it 👏

in reply toRun46

Thank you, how lovely! I just go really steady, it can be between 12 and 13 minutes per mile on a lot of runs and every now and then I can go mid 11 and feel it's the same. Tasha99 put me on to it and for a while now, almost all my running has been slow and in some cases deliberately so. It can take a while to get used to but well worth it. I ran past a few people once only just above their walking pace and I wondered what they thought of someone so slow. I smiled all the way as I knew the plan 😊 If you trust in it and do plenty of long runs then it really will give you such pleasure.

Run46 profile image
Run46Half Marathon in reply to

I first heard of it through Tasha too, then saw you'd joined in and both of you were in agreement about it's merits.

I've set my Garmin to HR zone 3 alert and swapped out the pace for HR on my display...tomorrow is day 1 😊

in reply toRun46

Oooooooh good luck. I hope it's for you. I have time, distance and pace on my first screen and heart rate, zone and average pace on my second. I still prefer to look at the time I'm running and look within the zones when I get home to see what band zone 3 and 4 are. It is really good though. Bear with it for a while and see if it's your thing 😊

Run46 profile image
Run46Half Marathon in reply to

I tend to only look at the 1st main screen and have now set it to distance, time & heart rate with a zone 3 alert to let me know when I've gone off track. Then I can nose at pace etc when I get home.

I've promised myself I'll give it at least a few weeks to see if I'm getting the hang of it and take it from there 🤞

in reply toRun46

Awesome. Good luck 😊

That’s amazing, I’m still rather surprised at how many calories you use up, your on the run snacks sound delicious 😋

in reply toSueAppleRun

I ate and drank them all up with Doritos and red wine!

SueAppleRun profile image
SueAppleRun10 Miles in reply to

Oh Doritos, i live them, I wrote an online review once for them whilst eating my way through a large bag, when i got to the factual part i checked the nutrition and nearly cried when i realised I’d eaten my way through 2000 calories while typing up a review that earned me 50 pence lol, i stopped writing food reviews after that and started checking calories before opening bags of things lol 😂

I’m so impressed with the distances people on here run, I can’t wait to get to the end of this 10k plan so i can head towards 10 miles

Look at that, my answers all about me again..... i really am impressed with your distances though

in reply toSueAppleRun

You are awesome. You both are. Gosh, I have to limit myself to half a big bag of the Chilli ones 🙈. Red wine is my downfall. I only have it on the evenings after my runs and not the night before 😂😂😂

I think we're all different and to me whether you run 5k 50k of 500k it doesn't really matter. There will always be people fitter, faster and stronger than me and that's all good. I do what works for me and enjoy it. Your 10k is your challenge and your mountain and you'll climb it. I can't wait for your post because you've worked so hard for it.
