17 mile run

โ€ข70 Replies

Wow! That did feel hard towards the end. Ideally wanted 18 but it was pretty warm out there and it was a new longest distance for me. Three times around the bank I know so well. Cows, geese, butterflies, dragonflies and ships galore kept me company. Chuffed with that but my little legs ache now ๐Ÿ˜Š

Take 2 days off at least - I took one and regretted the slow 5k I attempted on day 2 ๐Ÿคฃ

in reply to Tasha99

Thank you so much. I will just do two 5m runs now on Wednesday and Friday and a 7m run Sunday but will do them all super slow.

Great running GTFC! That is a long way๐Ÿ˜ฎ๐Ÿ‘ - no wonder youโ€™re tired now!

Out of interest, how are you fuelling?

in reply to Sandraj39

This run I just had a small water and one SiS gel. I'll take another water and two more gels next time I go 15+. I didn't really used to have anything when I did my first few HM's. Now if I go ten miles plus I think I'll take a gel an hour.

Sandraj39 profile image
Sandraj39Half Marathon in reply to

Just curious ๐Ÿ™‚- Iโ€™ve never fancied gels myself. When Iโ€™m running longer distances I have mostly used water and power flapjacks (quite famous on this forum!). I have also used Tailwind which I really like too .๐Ÿ™‚

in reply to Sandraj39

I've heard about Tailwind so might give it a go one time. I could take a little flapjack bar or jelly babies as well. It's all good fun though ๐Ÿ˜ƒ

misswobble profile image

Me too. I really look forward to the power bar. Theyโ€™re delish I only do tailwind on Marathon day. Canโ€™t afford them for owt else ๐Ÿ™‚

Wow thatโ€™s really not much fuel at all for that long!

in reply to Tasha99

It wasn't enough today if I'm honest. My water bottle is quite small too so next time I'll get another. I didn't really go out for it today, I was going to do it Friday but after one loop I felt good so carried on ๐Ÿ˜‚

Have you got a hydration vest? I really love mine ๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿคฃ

in reply to Tasha99

I've got a cheaper Aonjie one and I do like it as I put my phone in the back and it's not heavy on my tummy ๐Ÿ™ˆ it came with little water bottles and I do like it for long ones.

misswobbleMarathon in reply to

I got one as a gift but itโ€™s the smallest one without side cubbies. Itโ€™s been useful during the hot spell but for my longer runs I want the Aoninjii one with more storage Theyโ€™ve also got storage in front of the bottle stores as well as on the sides

As my runs get longer I'm always looking for places to run to. Driving to somewhere and running just doesn't seem right but I've done it on occasions. I spend a lot of time on mapmyrun etc, I don't like doing loops much.

I live between Winchester and Southampton, and it's exactly 21k from Winchester Cathedral to the Guildhall in Southampton. Maybe one day ๐Ÿคฃ๐Ÿ˜‰

in reply to Bladerunner2049

Ooooooooh! Yes. That would be lovely to aim for. I occasionally drive to a route nearby but mainly stay in the village I live in. Gosh, you're not far away from HM too!!

in reply to Bladerunner2049

I'm in Southampton! Earlier this year a few of us ran from Winchester to Southampton along the Itchen Navigation on a very hot day. It was our city to city run!

Bladerunner2049 profile image
Bladerunner2049Marathon in reply to

I did a small stretch of the itchen, just between Bramshaw and Allbrook. And from the Winchester PnR to Winchester. I can't imagine doing the whole route without twisting something ๐Ÿ˜ฌ but it is a lovely walk.

Hope the foot gets better soon, PF is a right pain.

in reply to Bladerunner2049

It was certainly trail territory and ankles went a couple of times! Lovely scenery though.

Off to minor unit with my foot as it is getting worse โ˜น

in reply to Irishprincess

Thank you ๐Ÿ˜ I think I may try, the last few felt tough today and was a bit of a reality check. HM is comfy now so I need to work on the miles after that. I know I've got it in me to do 20 so I'll try in a few weeks and see how I feel ๐Ÿ˜Š

I like the SIS gels and recently they sent me free caffeine gels along with my purchase. So I tried one out on a shorter run just to see how it was. Well let's just say I don't think i will take another . I was shaking . I don't really do well with caffeine but wanted to give it a try ๐Ÿ˜Š

in reply to Buddy34

Long run to Cleethorpes. How fab! My niece was there the other day on a beautiful day, on the beach ๐Ÿ–

Long runs are hard going sometimes but you can divide them up into phases and speed up a bit if you feel like it. Taking a snack and a drink always helps things along

I hope youโ€™ve recovered well!

in reply to misswobble

Thank you, yes I really seem to like doing loops at the moment and each one is around 4m or 6m depending which turn I take up on the bank. I will try a little snack on my next long run just to see how I go. Really appreciate your advice ๐Ÿ˜Š

Amazing run GTFC ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘I canโ€™t believe you can get to such distances so soon after starting C25k. Love how you accidentally did 17 miles instead of 6 ๐Ÿ˜ณIt took me nearly 2 years to get to HM. 10k is definitely my favourite distance though - anything over an hour (including other exercise such as workouts, cycling, swimming) and I start to get fed up.

in reply to Sandie1961

Thank you Sandie. I really appreciate this. I really like the longer ones and my favourite distance is 10 miles. I always go with how I feel now and after 6 (one loop) I didn't feel my stamina quenched enough so just kept going. When I feel good, I like to make it count as other times I may not. Nothing spectacular at all really as I go at steady 11 min mile pace roughly, some were 11.30 some quicker when I felt it, but nice and comfy really. I think the programmes on here really set me up well and since following Tasha99 advice of running much steadier looking at my heart rate I've really noticed a difference. It is still a terrific achievement to run HM distance and something nobody can ever take away from you ๐Ÿ˜Š
