Hi everyone, how have you been managing this past week?
As August begins, life here in Toronto is gradually opening up more and more. Patios and restaurants are now open for business. Also hockey, basketball and baseball are all back this weekend too. The pic here was from a recent run and that’s what it sort of feels like now, with the sun just peeking through the trees. A hint of maybe more light to come. On Saturday I finally joined our weekly group run for our 1 year anniversary. It was a good day and a huge turnout. Great to see some familiar faces again, and so many new ones. Although I admit the sheer number of people kinda threw me a little. I also ran my first pain free full 21k since my string of injuries began, so I’m hopeful that I can resume longer training finally. Trying not to overthink all the little niggles and just run easy, which seems to be working so far. There seem to be some actual smaller races happening too, under controlled conditions. How about you? Is life feeling any more normal yet? Any new run/race/training plans in store for you?
As ever, if you're new here, or just taking a look and getting comfortable before posting, hello! This post is a great place to introduce yourself if you're ready to do so.
If you are interested, there are plenty of workouts you can do at home from the YouTube library over on Strength & Flex, why not take a look!
Lovely photo Decker. That all sounds quite normal thank goodness and fab news on your 21K!
We have a bit to go I think in terms of normality but I’m in Ireland (North) at the minute visiting my mum and it’s much more “normal” here. We went out for dinner last night and the place was heaving! Although they did check our temperatures before we were allowed in which was reassuring. My plane was packed too and even though we all had to wear masks, social distancing seems to be impossible when you travel. So fingers crossed it’ll be ok.
My HM training is still on track and I did a lovely 17K on Saturday which felt great and I could have kept going which is always a good sign in my book. A “cutback mileage” week this week and then 18K the week after. I’m not following a plan and am just listening to how I feel and taking it one week at a time but with a “sort of plan” in mind.
Fingers crossed that your niggles stay at just niggles and we all have a good week whether we’re running or not.
Hi Decker , oh wow you do seem to be returning to normal over there don’t you? How wonderful. 👏👏 No so much here, unfortunately. There was a tiny little glimmer of hope for me and Redcello41 to take part in a real live 5k race next Sunday, but it’s been cancelled due to lack of interest. Such a pity as they seemed to have the social distancing plans nailed. 👎 Instead I took a leap of faith and entered the Bath Half next March. Here’s hoping it goes ahead. 🤞🤞
Training is going well. I did my 10 miler last week and shaved 5 or so minutes off my PB! Like Irishprincess , this is my cutback week as hubby and I are off to Devon (Dartmoor, my spiritual home actually ❤️) at the end of the week for a few days and I won’t be running down there. Lots of dog walks though. 🐾🐾
I have our girls’ holiday to Tenerife booked for October - already postponed from March. My daughters and grandson wish we’d gone in February now, as there’s no way we’ll be going in October. Either more ££ to change it yet again, or preferably a refund if EasyJet cancel the flights. 🙄
A shame the race was cancelled but the HM will give you something to look forward to. Have a wonderful time in Devon. I used to work in Tavistock (lived near Gunnislake) & spent my uni days at Exeter tramping over Dartmoor and drinking in the Plume of Feathers 😁
Oh wonderful Slinky! We used Tavistock to get provisions when we were staying on the Moor. My dad was brought up there and I’ve grown to love it as much as did. 🥰
Yes, the Bath HM will be a good focus. 😀🤞🏃♀️ Happy running to you too! 😘
Hello! Beautiful pic!! Good to see you're getting back to yourself again 😍
We went last night to a new place just up the road from us, actually it is still being built, but they have set up some temporary "shacks" outside to sell coffee, ice creams, beer etc., and they have built a lovely deck and socially diistanced seating on the beach. It was scrumptious to sit in the sun, sip their local craft lager, and watch the kitesurfers!! And they put up some beautiful Pride flags, one of which some of you will have seen on one of my Stravas 😊🌈
In running news I have been doing C25K! Although I've been running a bit quicker than when I did it last time 😄. I started off with Laura on my phone, but as I don't like things on my ears while running, when Garmin got fixed I programmed my watch with the intervals instead. It's great fun! I also did a 30k run last week, but I'm giving the long-long runs a rest for a week or two to get my Achilles back in shape. I may leave the ultramarathon until a little later in the year to be on the safe side.
It must be lovely to sip a cold craft lager down by the water! I remember that flag it was great! Hope C25 v2 works its magic again and that the recovery from your 30 goes to plan too!
That looks lovely and all sounds like fab progress (both your injuries and your covid progress).
I finished my low mileage week with another virtual duathlon. At the moment I'm sitting 5th out of just 12 (four people still haven't submitted times) which I'm very happy with (2nd out of 5 females). However, my best achievement this week is my (not)parkrun - not the fastest of the week for our local event, but I did get the highest age grading (70.05%) - and it's the effort that counts right 😍.
Next week I've signed up for an 'Intro to trails' group run (in a moment of madness inspired by Couchpotato2 !). I've never run in a group, don't do hills and don't do uneven ground so this will be a bit out of my comfort zone😨. It's the second of a series of two; sadly I missed the first one which I believe concentrated on running form, balance and stability, so Saturday has the potential to go horribly wrong 🤪but it's only 8k so I will grit my teeth, cross my fingers and who knows, maybe I'll find something new to love.
Just a baby duathlon ... 5k plus 2k 😊. My week's run distance was about 60% of normal, and ride distance even less. Honest 😆
I wish we were getting back to normal. Our running club isn't doing club runs yet. So I am doing my own training for the new forest marathon on September 13th. My friend has persuaded me to join her since I had been doing longer training runs with her 🤦♀️ So this week and next week are the heavy mileage weeks with the 18 and 20 milers booked in. Fortunately I am on leave from work but obviously going nowhere!
The long runs are a mix of pavements and trail, should be interesting and will give me an idea of how feasible this is. Unfortunately we have high temps forecasted so I'm hoping it won't get too hot.
Yes i have two long runs left on the plan, this weekend and next. I can't do the following weekend as I am away for a funeral and then it is taper time. Oh my goodness, it is coming round fast isn't it!
Hydration is a worry. On my last run I filled my camelbak with approx 1.8 litres of water. I had some left in it when we finished at the coffee shop. I am hoping this will be enough for this run. Not much chance of a refill in the forest! I guess hydrating well the day before will help.
I tend to go through water faster when I run alone in the heat - probably because I have time to think and obsess about it. With a friend chatting away I don't seem to need as much. But better safe than sorry. 1.8 is a lot though. My new vest just has two flasks for 1L. Then I also have a smaller bladder for another 750 or so. Hydrating the day before is supposed to help too, yes.
I did my 1st run since July 8th on Sunday! A 5 mile trail route with friends around Bembridge. It was very hot and i was ploddy but my sore foot held up and the puffiness I've been getting for last few weeks every night (though sore patch had reduced) actually has mostly gone. A friend suggested that running and getting the circulation flowing better may well of helped . So very happy with that and aiming to go out again tomorrow. And did big coastal walk with group last night too . Much improved (touch wood!)
Glad you had a great run with your group Decker !😊🏃🏃🏃🏃xxx
