Fall down

Honestly it's the worst feeling when you know you will not be able to run for sometime. I had a fantastic July with approximately 250km of running. Was looking ahead for another good month in August.. everything was looking perfect.. I was on my last km of my daily 10k run.. Garmin vibrated and showing 9th km done.. and bang... I fall so badly that I saw stars in broad daylight.. and I choose worst place to fall, it was broken footpath and some broken glass were there.. normally I stand-up quickly.. but this time I knew it's serious and I was on road/footpath lying.. one lady help me out with wipe and then I saw my knee skin was badly brushed and blood all over, my elbow my palm had serious brushes and cuts, blood and what not. She and some other people offers to help, but it was just a km left for my home so I came walking.. had a bath meanwhile my wife went out to buy dressing n antiseptic.. she helped me with dressing still knee blood is not stopped completely... I'll wait tonight to see if it starts to heal, otherwise I'll go Hospital tomorrow.. and no running until my knee and elbow heal completely, also have to buy new pair of running shoes 👟.

Oh dear, that looks nasty! You may need a stitch or two. Hope you recover quickly.

Don't scare me please. I never had stitch in my life.. I am dead scared of it 😧

Oh sorry, didn’t want to scare you! I am not a trained medic so ignore my comment 😊

Oh no! That's really unlucky. I'm no medic either, but make sure it's clean and keep it slightly elevated to help stop any bleeding. Bruises and cuts should heal soon, don't be too despondent but do be prepared for a few uncomfortable days ahead 🙁. Speedy healing, you'll be back out there soon 🙂

Thanks.

Yes I am cleaning it every 3-4 hour and changing dressing. Went to A&E but minor injury dept was closed, so I'll go again tomorrow morning.

Dang! ☹️

Falls are a kin of rite of passage here but that looks like another level altogether.

If your Tetanus innoculation isn't up to date I really, really would hope you get one is my unasked for advice.

I hope it heals soon, you were definitely unlucky J :(

Thanks.

I am hoping to get tetanus injection tomorrow as it's been long time that I needed it (not remember when, probably when I was a kid).

Tomorrow morning I'll visit A&E again when minor injury dept open and ask them for if they think I need it.

It's a hell of a long time since I actually did the qualifications for Medic j - but I am honestly relieved you are going to get this seen to. Dirty broken street glass, a combination of laceration and abrasion - too easy a portal for the wee nasties...

Best wishes for clean fast healing 🙂

Oh that’s a nasty one. I fell last week and split my hand and knee a bit but this looks a bit more serious. Mine took a week to heal up with a few applications of polysporin. Hope you heal up soon. Sounds like you were on a roll for distance.

I did similar in May. Got distracted and tripped over a tree root landing heavily on the knee I had been running to help rehab. I limped the last km home feeling sorry for myself, ordered new shoes, then waited about 2 weeks for them to arrive and my knee (and hands) to heal. Since then I’ve not looked back. In fact the break gave me time to reassess where I was heading with my running and to start a new programme first to 10k and now onwards towards Half Marathon in September. Hope you heal up quickly and get back to running soon.

Thanks ☺️

I should have bought new shoes at least a month back. I am supinator, so outer heel of my shoes wear off quickly (every 9-10 month), while rest of the shoe remain intact. I was already running with overused shoe, was waiting for my gait analysis appointment and shoe shopping and this happened.

Just come back from A&E they told me it'll take few weeks before it will heal specially my knee as skin is completely off. Look like August will be rest and rehab month for me.

Ohhh dear! Hope you mend soon! I’ve been so fortunate. Have never fallen in 20 months running! Hope I haven’t put the kiss of death on that now!

Ouch! It’s horrible falling. I fell a couple of years ago and the palm of my hand took the worst of with a very deep graze. To help it heal quicker I used some moist wound dressings. I was sceptical about these but they really did seem to speed up healing and stopped the healing skin cracking. Might be worth a try unless the hospital recommended something else.

Thanks ☺️

Hospital didn't recommend anything special, they gave me few plasters to replace existing one and asked to come back if I have swelling or anything serious.

But I must say when they were cleaning my wound I felt i am gonna die, it was painful. I can't imagine how I will clean it myself and put a new plaster tomorrow 😧

If you can bear it, a salt water solution is great way to clean grazes. Just mix some regular table salt with lukewarm water then use some cotton wool dipped in the solution to clean the wound. It DOES hurt but it is worth it as the salt helps the wound heal more quickly.

Ok, I know it will be painful and burning sensation too. Currently I am using Dettol antiseptic wash spray to clean it. I'll see if I can bear salt water 🙂

This is a late response but hope you have recovered completely and back on the road. I had a fall too, last week and got a bruised knee. I was wondering how long was your injury break?

jrunner profile image
jrunnerMarathon in reply to ritu85260

Yeah, I am all ok and ran my first full marathon last week (10th October) ☺️.

For the injury - it took about 2 months for me to walk properly, it was frustrating but you can't control certain things in life.

I wish you speedy recovery, don't be in hurry, take time , see a doctor if needed. Don't try anything until you heal fully. Hopefully it's not too bad.

Good to hear you are back and congratulations on your 42k! Mine is a bruise just below the kneecap that I am hoping will heal in another week, but you never know. Yes, I will return to running only when fully ready. But this wait is a torture!

jrunner profile image
jrunnerMarathon in reply to ritu85260

Yeah I understand. Even I thought (also nurse told me) that it'll be ok in a week, but it gone bad and had to visit another hospital.Try cleaning with salt water (warm) it will help in healing quickly.

Thanks for the suggestion. Will try warm salt water tonight.
