Running and Cycling and social distancing?

Well up until this weekend this was something that had not crossed my mind. I'm fortunate in that my location gives me access to trail runs along the highpoint of a canal system that for others requires a car journey to enjoy, meaning that during this time of lockdown I have had undisturbed access to as much running and walking solitude as I could wish for. With the lockdown easing though people are starting to reappear (how dare they!) So just what is a safe distance to run past someone etc? I picked up on this article:- outsideonline.com/2411878/n...

How's everyone else dealing with this issue or not. Stange Times.

I tend to run to the other side of the path when we're a few meters away (I'm no good at distances), then count to 10 or so before I return to that side.

The article is not good science. By the coast the wind often blows faster than I run. Every person has a slipstream downwind even when standing still.

I avoid narrow paths and stop to wait if necessary.

I was wary of being behind people, even before the rather dubious article was made public. I do try to keep away from people in all directions, sometimes staggering my line, holding back on my bike if overtaken until they are well away. It just seems there's nothing to lose by trying to do all I can to keep out of other's way. Equally, I'm learning not to stress so much when a group of cyclists pass me within touching distance and pull straight in in front of me (as happened this morning). I do what I can think of, and try to live with the rest and move on. Otherwise it's just too exhausting if you consider every possibility!

I have to admit I carry a handkerchief that goes over my nose and mouth as I pass anyone, never closer than 2 meters. I have tried running in a proper mask, and I hate it.

The cloth probably does little in practice, as I have a full beard (which also negates the mask), but serves at least as a warning, and reminder both to me and the others.
