Hello all fit friends. I have been reading your wonderful posts for a while with admiration. You all inspire me and got me carrying on and keep moving on. After i completed my C25k in October 2018, I quickly took a challenge to move to 10k by Dec. Since then I had been running various distances mostly in the double figures my max being 18kms. I run on the roads on my own with the company of my music and my poor legs.
I was not going to mention it but due to mixed feelings of anxiety and excitement I thought I would share with you all that I joined the Birmingham HM due on 13/10/19. I am anxious because I struggled a lot to train in summer due to the heat and too many occasions ending in too much food and drink. Yes I can not resist those two. I have started building back up on my training since the weather has taken a turn. Not where I was a couple of months ago but certainly getting there.
My excitement is on the unknown route, group of people and just the thought of me doing such a grand thing. I had never run or thought of running before I started the C25K. So this post is to thank you all for the encouragement. Wishing you well all of you!!!
I will let you know how it goes post the 13th!!

Oooh exciting! The first HM is such an achievement. Love it. Make sure you post a race report? I know what you mean about too much food and drink , I have the same problem. It's all about balance I guess !
Many thanks Snuffy_T. It is really an exciting time for me. Yes it’s about balance. I kick myself all the time after I stuff my face but do it over and over again which does not help.
Yes certainly I will post the report. Have a lovely day. X
Your user name says it all - and you will! 👊🏃♀️👍❤️
I think lots of us struggled in the heat this summer, so don’t feel bad about that. As for food and drink, well I suspect most of us are guilty of overindulging rather too regularly!
You’ll do your HM and you’ll love it! Whether you run the lot or not, you’ll get round and the sense of achievement will be second to none. Not long to wait now - please tell us how you get on, we’re rooting for you! ❤️
Aww many thanks Cheekychipmunks. You have just injected some zest into me. I convinced myself that I was being lazy and using the weather as an excuse!!
I so much look forward to it and I will definitely let you know how I get on. Really it’s about making the most and enjoying the day.
I have many happy memories of Brum back in the '80s - would love to do that HM there
Same advice as ANY distance applies - take it slow and steady, don't entertain Gremlins, have fun What I find important on those longer races is finding the 5k, 10k Ten mile and 12 mile points on the race map and memorising them. The very worst feeling for me, and it made one HM that was totally unmarked a disaster, is not having any idea how much further the finish is And last one, I was knackered by mile 12 but no way was I going to crack with "only" 1.1 miles left lol.
First HM, like first any distance, is unknown territory - but really, they are all the same, you train and on the day just keep putting one foot in front of the other
And btw - if you end up celebrating your HM in the Hazelwell Inn and Carly Smith happens to still be there...tell her Irish John from the Autumn of '83 sends his best memories
Thank you Irish-John for the invaluable information. To keep putting one foot in front of the other is key here. Thanks for the heads up on distance points as certainly I have a thing about knowing how longer I still got to run which gives me a bit of a boost.
I will certainly check on Hazelwelk Inn and pass your regards to Carly Smith🤗
Exciting news about your forthcoming HM 😃. You’ve done 18k which should see you in good stead on the day. The race passes so quickly, what with all the various things happening around you, but do try and take in as much of it as you can and enjoy yourself 👍🏃♀️🏅🧁
Good luck! You've got this with 18k runs already behind you. As Miss W says, take note of what is around you; keep your head up, make eye contact with the crowds and smile! After my first big event (GSR) I watched some video footage and remembered none of the route! I'd been so inward looking I'd missed the event altogether 😀. So, really experience it all, everything about it and enjoy - your first HM will be very special
