washing running shoes

Hi

another question from me

during winter here my shoes are going to get very dirty (I live in a country type village)

how do you all wash your running shoes? do you soak them first then stick them through the machine? wait for them to dry and then brush them off before washing?

with my son's football boots we rince, then scrub then wash, but they are harder underneath and easy to scrub

hints or tips gratefully received

Never machine! I wash the insoles regularly with my kit and only if the shoes are really awful I wash gently in the sink with mild soap and warm water. A soft brush helps for the soles and harder parts of the uppers. Then dry outside or with paper in away from direct heat. Laces I wash in a sock with my kit if muddy. 👍🏻

I forgot to say that in general a good brushing when dry does the job mostly. I've only washed my last pair of trail shoes 2 times in 400 miles. 👍🏻

that's a relief - I hate hand washing anything

I don't! I get pretty muddy up here, but I just bash the mud off when dry and hoover out the insides. I have a couple of pairs of shoes so I can rotate them if one pair is still squishy.

Yep that’s why I like 2 pairs of shoes

I once caught my husband about to wash my running shoes and I nearly had a fit! No, no, I run in muddy places mostly but never ever wash them or even clean them. All that mud and dirt means I've used them well and it's my badge of honour 🙂

I’ve hosed my trail shoes down in the backyard once after a very muddy run but that is all. Some newspapers crunched up in them for a day and they were good to go.

This is also my go to cleaning method after every muddy run, but we're talking squish through your toes even while wearing shoes muddy 😳😂. Otherwise I bang the dried mud off by banding the shoes together or against the side of the house.

Never, never, never put them in the washing machine, you’ll kill them! Follow manufacturers instructions, which in a nutshell is everything said here.......mine might get a hose down if really bad, but generally, allow to dry in a well ventilated area, then just bash together to get the worst lumps off, then off you go again.......

Running medals they are, be very proud of them!

I use an old washing up brush to get rid of loose dirt without washing them most of the time. If they are really mucky I scrub them outside with the washing up brush and some soapy water. I’ve never machine washed them.

I try and find a stream or really big puddle near the end of the run.

I must run in the rain and slosh through puddles a lot because my pairs always look as good as new most of the time. I've never washed either pair (2000km) Run through all the puddles you can find after a muddy field crossing? Or hose them off in the garden.

I didn’t used to put them in the washing machine but since all the ultra runners at club said they do a quick wash with the insoles taken out I do now. A quick cool wash is far less harsh than the hammering they get on endless runs apparently 🤣
