Gooooood morning good morning good morning good morning!!

Hope you all had a great weekend - I see there were a lot of races run, so I hope some of you will be sharing your reports this week! Loving all the #flatlay posts too πŸ’—πŸ’₯

I had a blast at the Brighton and Hove Triathlon yesterday, shaving an astonishing 41 seconds off my PB despite being really quite under-prepared 😊😊😊 I feel a renewed enthusiasm for endurance sports and I'm looking forward to the Brighton Marathon and other shenanigans next year.

I was also inspired the other day by this sweet little film of ultramarathon superstar Courtney Dauwalter tackling the Tahoe 200 miler - it's only 10 minutes long, check it out!

ANYWAY

Sometimes we don't feel like putting a whole post up but just want to share something small, so this is a great place for doing that during the week. Please join in the discussion!

If you're new or a lurker this is a great place to say a little hi without the pressure of a full post.

Happy running!

Sqkr & roseabi

I’d given up on my HM plan, what with the hamstring injury in July, then the dental abscess & horrible antibiotics last month, but last week things just seem to be falling into place, at last!

Getting used to the shorter stride length and at last my pace is picking up again - without any niggles in the calf, hamstring, knee, hip etc... looking forward to a testing trail run on Tuesday around the HM distance- if all goes well I can begin to taper for the Wimpole HM on 6th October 🀞

I have been inspired by all the race reports - thanks everyone

Posted about my hard 12K because of my calf muscles being tight, so I'll work on stretching more.

Last week was the first week I did 4 training sessions, with a proper intervals session - my legs did feel stronger, just tighter.

Pleased to report no after effects today, so onwards and upwards - over halfway now to HM distance :D (yes I am talking myself into this continually)

Hi Roseabi, I completed what I’ve decided will be my last long run of my HM training yesterday. I did 18K in 2:08:39 so I’m happy with that.πŸ™‚πŸ‘

I’m hoping on the day that the spectators will get me through the final 3.5K😊 I’m sure if I can run 18K then I can run 21.5 anyway!πŸ™‚

I’m going to continue with runs of 5-10K over the next 2 weeks, gradually reducing the distance. I might do a bit of pace work too but I don’t want to overdo it and risk injuriesπŸ˜‡

As it stands at the moment I’ll be ready for Bournemouth HM on 6 OctoberπŸƒβ€β™‚οΈπŸ€žWish me luck😊

Hello Abi, well done on your triathlon .

Having done a busy parkrun on Saturday in a fairly good time, I’ve just come back from a gentle 30 minutes along the prom but included the inclines around Southsea castle on there and back route.

Hoping for a long one on Wednesday but will see how the knees go. Physio booked for Friday.

congratulations on smashing your PB :-)

I really enjoyed the Brighton Triathlon on Saturday. Surprisingly even though the sea looked lovely compared to the grey terrifying crashing waves last year, it was a tougher swim I think. The current was pulling us towards Shoreham the whole way round the supersprint course. I think the tide may have been turning from high to low , as at times I felt as if I was in a swim treadmill going nowhere. I was convinced I had started in a safe position but somebody still swam over me, which was a bit disconcerting. I managed to pull it together and actually caught up with some of the stragglers from the mens wave. The Bike was interesting as there were competitors for the qualifiers still on the course when I started, who were speeding around on thousands of pounds worth of kit, including pointy helmets. I probably could have pushed myself a bit more on the run, but I was cycling home after and wanted to save some steam.

I came in the middle of the pack this time , out of 66 racers, compared to almost last, last year, so all in all a brill day for me. :-) Also my friends enjoyed it as triathlon first timers, I think they will be back competing next year.

roseabi profile image
roseabiUltramarathon in reply to Snuffy_T

Gosh, yes the tide must have turned round about then - that's awful! Well done for pulling it together, how fab!!! The current was OK for me, but still I managed to make a bit of a pig's ear of my swim, was really struggling to see where I was going! The hunt for better goggles continues...

Congratulations!!! It's such a fun event, isn't it? I got stopped on my cycle ride home by a group of people who wanted me to tell them all about it. The man in particular seemed like he really might be tempted to have a go next year 😊😊😊

I've still got my tattoo on, am I a dirtbag? πŸ˜„

Snuffy_T profile image
Snuffy_THalf Marathon in reply to roseabi

Whoopee we smashed it :-)

My tattoo fell off on the day. My hubby still has his on though, I am going to attack it with a bit of coconut oil in a minute. I have a double whammy with sighting as I wear prescription specs for the run and the cycle, so its nice and blurry for the swim. Mirrored lenses on the goggles do seem to help, mine are from decathlon.

A lot of our friends seem to be considering doing the super sprint next year, which is great. But I am starting to think its only because they can't believe we did it, as we don't look very athletic. :-)

I want to do the sprint next year, I am starting to believe in myself that I can work up to that distance in the sea swim. Once you get used to being swum over and kicked a bit, its not so daunting ...! I've got the 5k run covered.

roseabi profile image

The goggle problem for me is fit - I think my eyes and skull must be a peculiar shape!

Congratulations on the PB, roseabi !

Well, I ended up paying for my super long walk last week. My long taper run should have been fairly straightforward but I feel apart on the return up the hills. Luckily parkrun was a big surprise. I ended up running with a fairly fast runner who had come late. I didn't want him to have to run too slow, so made sure I kept up my pace. I ended up shaving 2 minutes off my best time this year, and came within 30 seconds of my PB! That was a huge boost to my confidence. I've managed to follow this with a 5km run at the same pace I did during the May speed challenge, so it looks like I'm starting to find some speed.

This weekend is my HM at the Oslo Marathon - I hope you've updated your pompom list. The Oslo Marathon people certainly haven't. They sent me my bib number on Friday - for the full marathon! I fired off an email to complain. Then a friend said I should just go for it, and I felt a bit despondent, thinking that I've had signs twice now saying that I should. 10 days ago I discovered that the timing people hadn't transferred me to the shorter distance, then this. But things have probably been sorted now, so it's the HM for me. It has got my thinking about that winter marathon again, though. Watch this space!

Feeling pretty miserable myself; my feet are really suffering, my work shoes are so worn out its like walking around in old slippers with no support. Waiting for new ones to arrive, really wish I'd paid attention to them earlier.

Both road and trail shoes worn out and replaced but not like for like. 1st run last night in trail shoes was painful in places and had very tender feet this morning πŸ™ˆ

Just praying there's a shoe box sized parcel waiting at home, if not might be forced to ignore health and safety and wear cycling shoes tomorrow and pray its the one day I don't need steel toe caps.πŸ™

Well I’ve been feeling a bit despondent lately. Think I wore myself out with back to work etc but yesterday I surprised myself. I just bunged my headphones in and put a 30 min podcast on and decided to run without looking to see if I was starting too fast or slow and not look at my watch till the 30 mins were up.

And when I did I’d done 4K. Which I know is not brilliant compared to some people but lately for me it’s really speedy. In fact I was a bit miffed that id stopped then because, when I worked it out, if I’d carried on to do 5k, I’d have beaten my PB by nearly 2 minutes!!!

My first ever 5k was my fastest to date and that was the first run after I graduated C25k. Never managed to beat it yet!! Maybe all this distance running HAS sped me up after all.

C3PO profile image

I am SO impressed by your shennanigans, roseabi ! Well done on your PB yesterday, too! Woman of steel!

As for me, still grinning after my HM yesterday. And wincing a wee bit because quads are complaining! But it is a good sore, if you know what I mean. Now busy plotting my rehab from ITB friction syndrome. It's an annoying beast of an injury, and tricky, but I am going to do my best to beat it so I can be ready for another HM in the spring with a bit of luck. (Being a drama queen, I have actually convinced myself I will have ITB syndrome for the rest of my life LOL.)

Triathlon πŸ‘‰ SMASHED, as predicted! Brilliant stuff!

I didn't run for quite as long as I'd planned yesterday due to (as ever) trying to fit too much into my day, but I think 15k is sufficiently long prep to get me round next week's half. And then I only a have a 5k to prep for so I'm going to work on speed! Quite excited about that.

Had a nightmare of a day at work today though, so am currently on my way home and eating a giant bar of Tony's chocolate on the bus. Not quite the healthy taper routine it should be, but chocolate's good for the soul right?

Hi Abi,

Glad your triathlon was a fabulous success!! πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ‘

My HM plan seems to be under constant revision as I look for ways to fit things in, keep my niggles at bay and do some 10k races. Still aiming to get a HM in on my birthday though.

I’m hoping to get back to doing a long run this week as my ITB seems to have settled down (🀞). It’s survived two weekends of parkruns followed by 10k races the next day so all the mileage seems to be over weekends with recovery during the week! This has had the benefit of taking it easy to begin with at parkruns and finding I have left loads in the tank at the end, so I’ve been getting lots of segment achievements and odd PB’s on Strava!!

Now, I need to be braver and enter something longer than a 10k at some point soon!

Happy running everyone!

Sadie-runs profile image
Sadie-runsHalf Marathon in reply to TailChaser

HM plans are built for constant tweaking, I have found! πŸ˜‚ Oh, if you have any tips for rehabbing ITB, please do share, Tailchaser! I am plotting and planning my recovery from this pesky thing. Good luck with your long run. 🀞 xx

Thanks Sadie. That’s good to know πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚ I wish I had a magic wand for the both of us. Your HM has given me hope that it is possible!! The best thing I’ve found so far was the elbow in glute straight after the Big10k. Free massages on offer there so you paid in pain! I’m going to get more sports massages I think as that worked much better than the osteopath. Oh, ice packs and lumpy rollers too. Anything painful seems to work really 😳

Sadie-runs profile image
Sadie-runsHalf Marathon in reply to TailChaser

I wouldn’t recommend running a HM with ITB syndrome unless you like pain πŸ˜‚. But it appears possible, especially if you are prepared to run/walk if you get a flare up. πŸ™ I have been told that glute/hip strengthening is the answer...so I am about to embark on more of that, and 2 weeks off running to let it settle. I’ll let you know how that works...! I have a sports massage next week - will ring ahead and ask her to sharpen up her elbow! πŸ˜‚

TailChaser profile image
TailChaserMarathon in reply to Sadie-runs

πŸ˜‚ yes, you’re probably right. I’ve been doing lots of glute/hip strengthening since I saw the physio a few months back and starting to lose the will to live with them tbh. Supposed to do them β€˜at least’ twice a day 😴. I have noticed the gym strengthening exercises are getting easier so maybe I’m getting somewhere. I’m really good at clams and I can do one legged squats without wobbling now so if it’s still giving me gip on Wednesday I’ll be really annoyed! β€˜Enjoy’ the massage! Lovely badge next to your name btw 😁

I know how you feel πŸ™ Strength work is so boring Zzzzzzzz. I tried listening to podcasts at the same time to keep myself entertained, but then I lose count of the reps 😱. Do let me know how you get on with Weds run - is it a long one? My ITB only seems to flare up after 10k or so (on my HM it held up until 12k hoorah!) And yes! Loving my new badge. 😊

TailChaser profile image

Yep, I know that one. I drift off into my own thoughts and away the time goes! Will do. I’m planning 15k and hoping to do more if it holds up. 17k is where mine usually seizes up so it’s better behaved than yours but I really can’t do much once it’s gone...so near yet so far. Well, tomorrow is the day that UpTheStanley and myself finally run our HM distance attempt, virtually! πŸ˜€

I’m rather ill-prepared I must say. I ran PR at the weekend and have done nothing except walk the dog since. No strengthening yoga, no good hydration or nutrition. Quite the opposite, but we have an excuse - our little grandson was born on Sunday and he’s kind of sidetracked me! πŸ’™πŸ’™πŸ’™

But I’ll be out there tomorrow as early as I can (it needs to be light for my towpath route), and I’m going to do it. Yep. No question. If it needs to be the pace of a go slow snail, so be it.
