It's a brand new week - how's the running, resting, and cross training going?
I took part in the Rise Heroes Run yesterday! It's a superhero-themed fun run that raises money for Rise, a charity fighting for freedom from domestic abuse.
I went as 💥BLUE TRIATHLON CAT WOMAN: DEFENDER OF ENDURANCE SPORTS!!!💥 I wore my triathlon suit, a hat with cardboard-and-fabric ears sewn on (very badly), my tri number belt, and a blue satin tail. I got a few funny looks, but one little girl pointed at me and said "Daddy, look at her!!" - winner 😄
What superhero would you be?
ANYWAY 😊😊😊
Sometimes we don't feel like putting a whole post up but just want to share something small, so this is a great place for doing that during the week. Please join in the discussion!
If you're new or a lurker this is a great place to say a little hi without the pressure of a full post.
Happy running, superheroes!

I've got a sore Achilles at the moment, so I did a short tester run on Thursday, and struggled a bit during the 10k on Sunday. Going to keep running (after a couple of days rest!) but rein back the distance and speed pretty sharply! And do more swimming, and some cycling too. And strength work, of course 😊 I increased my lower body weights last week - gainzzzzzzzz 😄💪
Ha, ha, great photo! Cat Woman meets Pippi Longstocking!
Ran the Helsinki City Run HM on Sat 18 May, and I'm happy to report that I got in some speedy PB times - I smashed my PBs for both 10k (56:19) and 15k (01:26:32)! It was a hot blisteringly sunny/cloudless day and I was feeling great until just after 15k "Great! I've got 33:30 to cover 6km and I'll be really close to sub 2hrs!" I was thinking to myself...Then cramp set in forcing me to cover the 6k in 4x run walk segments! Grrrr!!! So about 42:30 for the last 6km! That was the first time I've ever had to walk! Humbling....I didn't walk in my Tallin marathon last year. So a 02:08:47 finishing time which was still a PB by 20s which was a bit of a miracle. It was the first time I've ever suffered from cramp and can only put it down to the heat and sub-2hr 0-15km early pace I set. It may also have been psychological because there was supposed to be a water station at 15k and although the tables were set up but no water set out! I may have mistaken it on the map as a HM station when it was only for the marathoners. Grrr!!! Still lots to learn! I'm sure I always try to start off slowly but it must be the race atmosphere that sucks us along every time!
Good news is that after the HM Sat my daughter promptly decided to sign-up for it for next year (2020 early bird super cheap offer 32€). She's still on week 3 of C25K but at 19 years of age she is probably going to leave old Dad for dust next May 16th! That'll be a butt kicking I won't mind!
Will do a 5k and maybe 10k this week and a trial PB attempt at HM distance during training next week. Toying with the idea of another HM here in Helsinki on 8th June.
Oh how annoying to get cramp but that's still a great time!
Glad you're prepared for the butt kicking your daughter will give you 🤣 My son started running just after me last Spring and his improvement has been staggering! We did our first parkrun a year ago and he jeffed his way round in 35 mins. On Saturday he PBd in 23:05 😮 How I wish I was 14 - having said that I was rubbish at running when I was a kid so maybe not 😂🤣
Except for not having time for my long run last week, I had a good week. As well as the speed challenge, I ran parkrun. It was a wheezy parkrun, but mostly because my pace was a decent 6:33. Now I'll have to see if I can translate this into this week's speed run. Sunday I participated in a hill race (it was on roads, so I guess it wasn't really a fell race) up about 250m. I was pleased not to come in last, and would like to return with most of the family next year.
My only runs planned this week are my track and the Ecotrail mixed trail/road race. I'm doing 31 km, and plan to Jeff it.
Superhero? Maybe Yoda, even though he isn't technically a superhero. I have the ears.
Well I'm still very pleased with Saturday's effort, achieving this month's distance goal of 15 miles. It was a lovely day and there were no downs to it at all, great views, chatted to some lovely people, held a few gates for folk and a cyclist kindly held a gate for me (I kept looking for his pals!) It was a 10 out of 10 afternoon.
I was annoyed in the week I'd only gotten 1 run in as work has been so full on, the 2 nights that might have been possible I was finished late and was so dead on my feet it was all I could do to get ready to do it again the next day.
More than 1/2 way achieved this month's strava run climbing badge too.
I'm already looking for next month's 17 mile route and am quietly amazed on the map at the area I'm covering... it's fab! 😁😎
Well, I’m getting a bit nervous about my first HM on August 18th. I have 12 weeks left on my plan and the HM is in 13 weeks, so I’m on schedule. I’ve done up to 10k, having now run this twice in my life. Today the plan is to do 12k which will be a first. I need to increase my cross training as so far it has amounted to 5k walks, occasional exercises and one yoga for runners video session. Most Wednesday’s I go to a free running group which is interval training.
I went on a parkrun road trip with some of our parkrun’s regular volunteers and runners on Saturday. It was a lot of fun. As an introvert I’ve been out of my comfort zone quite a bit, but am generally enjoying it.
As for a super hero 🦸♀️ not really up on them, maybe the mother from the Incredibles lol.
Distarous attempt at the speed challenge this morning but I'll save the gory detail for the other thread.
To cheer myself up and inspired by Sophie Hahn's T38 100m World Record yesterday I did some 100m sprints. Sophie's WR is 12:43 - best I managed was just under 20 secs 😂 It was fun though.
Usual club runs and parkrun for me this week - I might reattempt a sub 10 min last 2km in parkrun depending on the conditions and how I'm feeling x
We’re settling back into weekends at the lake(Yippee!) which means regular trail runs (Yay!). I got out for a great slow solo trail run on Saturday of 6.4k and will head out today for another one today. If I have still got hubby convinced to join me, I'll keep it a short 3k through the hills plus a jaunt on the road back to the vehicle. I’m loving being back in the hills again but Saturday’s “run” was a huge reminder of how much work I have ahead of me if I want to do well. I may have a HM in my legs, but a HM in these hills is a whole different ball of wax. Just a great excuse to get out in the hills as much as I can. Unfortunately my trail running partner of the last few years has developed a huge phobia of getting back on the trails for some reason and I just can’t seem to get her to join me. I’ll keep trying though, I miss having her on the trails with me, kicking my butt up those hills and laughing our heads off at the stupidest things.
Sounds like things are going great Sask. Yes I would agree a hilly trail HM is very different from a road one. Sorry to hear about your friend. Hoping she gets back to it soon.
I keep inviting her, in hopes that one day she'll take me up on it. It really isn't like her, but someone in her church was diagnosed with Lyme disease and is very immobile. I think it has freaked her out a bit. I've reminded her the precautions I'm taking and what my plan is if I end up with a tick on me. It is all about early diagnosis and being aware of it since Lyme isn't really something we see here very often......yet. So far, I haven't had one tick on me yet, but I am super cautious...and well sprayed with icaridin.
I still don’t feel worthy putting a post on here, so I always default to B210k, but just also letting you awesome lot know I ran 14k this morning - SuperChipmunk! I’m on target for getting a shiny 10 mile badge on my ‘starting C25K’ runniversary on June 11th! Excited, me? Yesssss actually, I am! 👏👏👏
My new plan has not exactly gone to plan. I missed two runs of week one ☺️ I thought I could just catch up but my nike run app won’t let me so I just had to move on Things move up a notch from 6k today to 15 km tomorrow Gulp 😁
I’m making heavy weather of my runs at the mo 😤. Hopefully a long, slow trail run tomorrow will restore my equilibrium 🏃♀️
Well I did it! I feel dead tired and heavy-legged though. Still, i enjoyed it as it was lovely out and the country park was looking beautiful. I need practice with my new water bottle as I got a face full of water several times! LOL
A slow jogging pace was called for thank gawd. Garmin says it was 14 degrees but it felt scorchio to me Mind you I was wearing long tights because of my spot-fest. Sigh
I had a great 21 on Saturday, but then developed another health issue (nothing too serious) which has put me out of running commission this week. Hoping I won’t have to miss my Sat race and its too late to transfer my place now. If I do the race it will be just to finish and enjoy it. We will see. As for heroes - on Saturday I felt like Iron Man. Today more like tin man
Sorry to hear you're dealing with an issue right now that is curtailing your running. Fingers crossed you can still take in your trail event this weekend. Going to just finish and enjoy is a great plan if you are well enough to go.
Well I'm in for a boring week on the couch. Sunday's super HM high will have to last me a while 🏅😀. I actually took an emergency appt at the docs today - was with a paramedic rather than a dr but she kept popping off to check with the gp so all was well. In short, xray tomorrow which wouldn't show stress fracture anyway, but has to be done first! They may then book me an mri which should show a stress fracture if there is one. In parallel I HAVE AN APPT WITH AN NHS PHYSIO THIS FRIDAY EVE!!! Seems we now have a resident physio at our practice. I take back everything I said about waiting months. I'm still hoping its extensor tendonitis rather than stress fracture but think I will have to get back to work tomorrow regardless of how it feels. Running is out of the question for this week tho. Hey ho. I can't say I feel anything like a superhero right now either 😂
Isn't it just! I was amazed. It's not an emergency and I'm always reluctant to take those appts, but it was going to be a whole week to wait for a normal appt - potential lack of earnings empowered me! The paramedic was super keen to help. It was fab 😍
I will admit to not feeling very motivated these past few weeks... not ideal as i am 5 weeks out from the marathon I entered...
Does anyone have any suggestions on how to motivate yourself during long runs? Getting nervous for this marathon... Just aiming to make the 5h30 cutoff
I am back in the windy city of Port Elizabeth (since Mon), only flying home tomorrow evening. I have managed to sneak in a 9km on Tues along the beach and hope to do 12km this evening before a weekend of 30km LSD on Sat and a average paced 10km race on Sunday for the first of two weeks high mileage before taper time.
Hope everyone has a great last stretch of the week! Good luck to those racing on the weekend!
Hey Captain Dive Marvel! Good to see you 😊😊😊 And thank you xx
Good luck for the final weeks of training! I like to think of a long run as an adventure, and a nice big chunk of me-time - so I really look forward to them 😍
Like the ‘game face’ Abi, you look like you mean business!
I ran my first 10km race since last May on Sunday. Crouch End 10k is always a fun day, I’d recommend it to anyone in Norf Lahndan, particularly for the freebie jam doughnut from Dunn’s bakery at the end. Well, Haringey council roadworks had ballsed up the distance a bit - so with diversion it was actually a 10.24km run. Still I took a minute and a half off last years time for 46.31. Very happy with that as I’d been struggling with a calf niggle the week before and wasn’t sure if I’d run. Then the kids had their 1 mile races in the afternoon and did very well too - and ample time in the park for fizz and fun in the sun.
I’m pondering an attempt on my own personal Everest on Saturday - the sub-20min parkrun. I haven’t tried yet this year, but I’m feeling on good form so a trip to the flat-track of Hackney Marshes may be in order. No doubt I’ll come and brag on here if I manage it. 😉 So you probably won’t hear from me next week!
