Good morning campers!

It's another lovely new week, so let's grab a coffee/tea and a nice carby, fatty snack, and have a good old chinwag about how our running/crosstraining/resting/recovering is going 😊😊😊

Sometimes we don't feel like putting a whole post up but just want to share something small, so this is a great place for doing that during the week. Please join in the discussion 😊

If you're new or a lurker this is a great place to say a little hi without the pressure of a full post.

Happy running, awesome people!

I always check on Strava before putting my update here, and sometimes I am surprised by how much I did the previous week. This time, not so much 😊 1 run and 2 strength sessions - I am definitely winding down! I'm going for a run today, then I'll probably just rest the whole week after that. That's the way the cookie crumbles. Feeling fine though - I'm also trying out "banking sleep" this week, face bra!!! πŸ˜„πŸ‘™

Last week was a great one for me. I managed to run every other day giving me 4 runs last week, putting me a couple days ahead on my HM training plan. The sun was shining, we were above zero (just) and the snow was melting (yay!). There was still a lot of ice on the pathways so the runs weren't fast by any means. I got 2 7k runs in, a 14k and 5 1/2 k. The right bum cheek and hamstring felt surprisingly good when I went out for a short run with hubby yesterday so after he bailed I figured I might as well keep on trucking for the 5k. It was supposed to be quite a slow recovery run but the legs felt great, I was running without music (since it started with hubby) so it ended up being my fastest pace of the week despite heading through the park and having to slow down for the ice. This week is supposed to be well above zero so a great week for a couple 10.5k runs.

I'm still seeking out ice-free paths now a thaw is in. I can finally get out of the Batcave! Will be running Espoo Arena indoor HM tomorrow (HM No 9 this year) but hopefully after that most runs will be outside from now on. Have slipped a bit from my HM+10k+Parkrun weekly plan but hope to get back to it this week.

Countdown to Hastings Half for me this week so I'm definitely winding down.

As parkrun was cancelled on Saturday this morning's 5 miles along the seafront was my first outing since last Wednesday.

It didn't go particularly well unfortunately πŸ˜• My legs felt so tired! I'm thinking maybe it's dehydration as I was at a Music Festival with my pupils all day yesterday (well not the bit where I sneaked to my mum's to watch some of Millwall v Brighton 🀣) and my legs felt really heavy before I went to bed last night.

Positives out of negatives though I was so pee'd off by the last km I ran it in 5mins just to get to the end πŸƒβ€β™€οΈπŸƒβ€β™€οΈ

Nice gentle 5k on Wednesday then that will be it for running until Sunday 😳

Did you do a lot of standing and walking around at the festival? That won't have helped.

Awesome last km - well done!!!

Enjoy your rest xxx

As ordered, I made a brew and nabbed the last piece of homemade made date β€˜n walnut 😁

Some good running here peeps, in trying circs, what with the weather and one thing or another

First run of my crisp new shiny plan today. 5k jog. Got my shoes completely bogged down over their tops Shudder 😬. Fast five tomorrow Boo 😁. It was lovely not to have ones hat blown off πŸŒ¬πŸ’¨ 🧒

Speaking of shoes, mine are well beyond their intended mileage So, being as I was in the vicinity of a Nike shop today, I popped in. i soon popped out again as the staff were engaged in kicking one another up the arris 🀨

I did catch sight of some shoes that looked dreamy though πŸ₯°

Yay for a shiny new plan! Have you had any issues with Runkeeper freezing up when trying to save runs on the training plan? I had this happen on Friday after my 14k run (Noooooooo!!!!) where the app completely froze and I couldn’t save it. Fortunately I was able to download the run from my Garmin (it’s an old FR10 so that took a bit of figuring out but glad it worked!) but then couldn’t mark that run as complete. I’ve logged off and on a few times and was all of a sudden able to mark that run and the 5k run as complete late last night. I’ve sent Runkeeper an email but haven’t heard anything but on their FAQ it is listed as a β€œknown problem” with the training plan and iphones 😒. Just wondering if you’ve experienced similar and if you found a solution?

misswobble profile image
misswobbleMarathonβ€’ in reply toSaskAlliecat

It always says it’s having trouble saving as The server is busy. It will save the run though so do press save You can edit it once you get home, where you have home WiFi , thenie add in the detail, eg name of run, shoes worn, etc. Or you can turn on mobile data and save it

SaskAlliecat profile image
SaskAlliecatHalf Marathonβ€’ in reply tomisswobble

I've had that message before but this is different. There's no message, It's just completely frozen and nothing works. I left it while I ran errands and it still didn't work, even when I got home. It was frustrating to say the least but at least I was able to transfer my run from my watch.

misswobble profile image
misswobbleMarathonβ€’ in reply toSaskAlliecat

Hmmm the support desk is usually good. Someone called Cate always answers my queries really quick, so don't give up on it. Are you on RunkeeperGo?

I just got a brand new plan off it yesterday. It seems to ask a lot more questions than previously before issuing a plan. Ran with it today and it kept pestering me with times - i think when i fell behind the pace. Drove me mad but it made me hurry up

SaskAlliecat profile image
SaskAlliecatHalf Marathonβ€’ in reply tomisswobble

I got a response back yesterday to try deleting the app and redownloading it to see if there was something corrupt in it. Fingers crossed it works when I get out for my next run. Reading through the new updates, it looks like they have revamped the HM training plan with faster times and some interval runs. I'm excited to see what my next plan brings! It is only on the HM plans for now.

There was a promo in January for 50% off so I'm giving RunkeeperGo a try for this year. I'm hoping the live tracking will work when I'm running my trails in the hills but cell coverage is spotty so tough to say how it'll go. I'm getting used to the plan now and just need to trust it, I think, but so far so good. We'll see come January when I have to renew at full price what I decide to do. I've been using the free plan for years and it did the job, but I missed having the free training plans when they switched their format to myAsics.

misswobble profile image
misswobbleMarathonβ€’ in reply toSaskAlliecat

It does go AWOL on the trail. It’s happened to me several times They will tell you to enter the stats manually, which infers you’re using a watch as well 🀨Just as well in the circs I don’t bother with it on race day πŸ™‚

I am meant to be running tonight with the club but had a stonking headache earlier so wimped out. Instead I have just polished off the last of the honey roast peanuts (oops, how did that happen?) Better go running Wednesday, a non-standard running day, to compensate.

I can't believe there are only 6 sleeps left before LLHM! I'm pretty excited just now and feeling I can do this! Let's hope those feelings last. do seem to have lost my favourite capris though (was hunting everything out for a #flatpic, but have no idea where they've gone). Have just ordered some new ones, but won't have chance to try them out in advance of the HM so may just have to run in long trousers :D

Feeling battered after a sports massage today, but hopefully nicely loosened up. Just a 6K and a 3K in my plan for this week, then the big day on Sunday :D

I’ve been increasing my long runs to prep for the ATB 30k race in two weeks. This Sat was the last long one before taper time, and I managed to hit 30k. Was building an ok pace early on but at the end I slowed down quite a bit. Felt ok the next day tho. I also bought a new pair of Sauc Hurricanes that I’ve used on my last two long runs. Really liking them. Last week we had the kids home for March break so we took a couple of days off in Niagara Falls where I got a short run in. That was something I’ve wanted to do for some time now. It was covered in ice and tourists. Really would like to go back and do a longer run along the Falls, beyond the Horseshoe. I also finally signed up for a 25k trail race in May. I am kinda stoked about that one. ATB is coming up fast and almost all of our run group are going too see our coach Jim off on his incredible 725km charity run from Hamilton to Boston to do the marathon there.

Always fun when you take the fancy nail varnish off from your pal's birthday do and discover that contrary to what you initially thought, both your second toenails are black from the half marathon πŸ˜‚ Looks like this will be an always thing for me...anyone any tips on how to stop bruising my toes? It's not a shoe size thing as my big toes are fine and dandy (my running shoes are also a good 1.5 sizes bigger than my usual shoes), must be just the way I run...presumably I'll just have to live with it!

roseabi profile image
roseabiUltramarathonβ€’ in reply toSqkr

I think my socks have sometimes given me this problem, I hate socks! I have had some success with Injinji separate toes ones.

Sorry to creepily answer you within seconds btw, I promise I don't live on here, I just happened to be doing something on my computer πŸ˜„

Sqkr profile image
SqkrHalf Marathonβ€’ in reply toroseabi

Haha not creepy at all! 🀣

Iiiiinteresting, I thought I loved my Hilly marathon socks but maybe I should branch out and try something new πŸ€” I can deal with sad toes for a half distance if I have to, but do worry about the damage when I step up to a marathon!

Sqkr profile image
SqkrHalf Marathonβ€’ in reply toroseabi

Right! I've bought some injinji socks, in a very pleasing unisex color of seafoam (hooray). I'll report back! I've many halfs (halves? Seems wrong in this context) to come this year so plenty of testing capacity πŸ˜„

roseabi profile image
roseabiUltramarathonβ€’ in reply toSqkr

Excellent - well, I hope you like them! I tend to think they feel a bit uncomfortable when I first put them on, but I don't notice when running.

Equi-geek profile image

Socks, yes, and I found changing the lacing on my shoes helped. Had 3 black toenails in training for the Great South - both toes next to the big toes, and one little toe. Changed my lacing and stopped using one specific pair of socks and no problems since!

linda9389 profile image

Equi-geek profile image
Equi-geek10 Miles

Hi all! Made a few changes recently in my slow metamorphosis from middle-aged burn-out on the brink of Type 2 and and a heart attack, into the best athlete I can be (considering arthritis, age etc!). Latest is the diet. Always been a bread and cheese vegetarian but since the Running Show earlier this year I've been giving Anita Bean's book a good go and feeling the benefit of a wider variety of food, suited to running, and getting more confident with cooking. But also I've been working my way up to 16:8 intermittent fasting too (but gently!) for weight loss.

So, the reason for telling you all this is that for the last few weeks I've really struggled with longer runs. I've had niggles in my hips and fatigued calves. Nothing acute, just each Saturday 'long run' of 11.5km including the Parkrun has been getting more and more exhausting. I didn't know if diet change was the reason, or even over-training.

Last weekend we didn't have Parkrun, and I've signed up for a 50-mile March challenge. I had to find a long run, but didn't want to go. After procrastinating, I finally got out on Sunday afternoon and arranged to run from home to my parents house - 12.5km - with the OH tracking my progress and meeting me there with the car. Better still, it was a lot of downhill, wind behind me, and mum had just baked a lemon drizzle cake! Sounds fantastic. I planned to go past a lot of places that were important to me during my life - which was great - but my flipping legs just had nothing in them. And in the last km I had to wonder whether I'd pulled a calf muscle and seriously considered stopping.

But it was a good route, and I felt satisfied for having done it. Went swimming on Monday and stretched the legs out in the pool. But then I faced Tuesday night's run with stiff and fatigued legs too.

I thought 'ho-hum, here we go lead-legs....' It was the 6km route I'd run twice a week all last summer in prep for the Great South, but hadn't run since October. For some extraordinary reason, everything was suddenly working and pain-free. I put in PB's for two segments on Strava. The hill at the end of the dead-end road felt flatter. The only problem was lower gut discomfort and clenched buttocks for the last km! False alarm - as it turned out!

Even though I now live in a permanent state of some ache or stiffness somewhere, I feel like I'm on the right track to permanent change, at long last.

linda9389 profile image
linda9389AdministratorMarathonβ€’ in reply toEqui-geek

Wow. That sounds like lots of positive changes. Well done you. It's so hard sifting through all the variables trying to work out why runs are good or bad isn't it - and especially with big changes like yours. Maybe it's just taking a little while for your body to adapt, but is sounds like it's getting there. Good luck :)

Thanks Linda, running certainly seems to have made me more diet-sensitive - which is a good thing. I am between a rock and a hard place because I really do need to lose weight to fit into a wetsuit by May, but also I am determined to avoid feeling like I am on a diet, as it leads to binge eating πŸ™„. It is odd why some things are hard and some just work out without us realising it... healthy eating is tricky... and I see your issues...( I love bread and cheese by the way... ) My Nan had that, for most of her weekday lunches for as long as I can remember.. a little bit of brown bread and cheese.. she lived until she was 99!!!

You are, most certainly on the way and as long as you are enjoying it... that is the way to go! xx
