Well this last week went by quickly, even though it has been a quiet week. I’ve done my last race of the season and will be easing off my training and enjoying some downtime with my family and, focusing on other parts of life too that need attention. My last race was a bit of a gong show with me not only getting lost, doing a loop of the trail backwards, accidentally stepping into the icy river on the first of 3 loops, and feeling painful twinges when my DIY spikes pushed through my shoes as I landed on rocks and ice. Also as a first winter trail race, I can safely say I enjoy the warmer ones MUCH more:) Lots of lessons learned.

How about you? How has your week gone? Are you winding down your season or training for races still?

Sometimes we don't feel like putting a whole post up but just want to share something small, so this is a great place for doing that during the week. Please join in the discussion! If you're new or a lurker this is a great place to say a little hi without the pressure of a full post.

ATTENTION ALL! Do you have any events this weekend that you'd like to be added to the pompom post? If so, please let us know below! πŸ‘‡ πŸ‘‡ πŸ‘‡

Happy running!

Decker, Sqkr, & roseabi

Well done Decker, sounds like a bit of an icy ordeal.

I am in a bit of a state of flux at the moment as my HM training doesn't begin until December, so for now I am just running what I feel like.

This meant I had the rare honour of being able to get out and run with my girls on Sunday morning. Their interest has waned over the past year, but they were up bright and early this morning and keeping my company which was lovely - so lovely in fact that it doesn't feel like I have been for a run at all!!

Sounds like you have got the best part of this running thing worked out. You are enjoying it and you've got your girls interested again!

Blimey that sounds painful Decker😫 A real obstacle course! Other parts of my life are needing attention too atm so I know what you mean.

My HM training is having a down week because I’m with my mum in Ireland and I don’t want to head out and run a long run as I’d rather spend quality time with her 😘 Early morning is not going to happen because it’s quite icy first thing. Then I fly home and we have other family coming to stay the weekend! So, the running must take second place for a while.

But..... I’m thinking I might just be able to squeeze a decent length run in on Friday after Pilates. It’s either that or make up the beds.....πŸ€” mmmmnnn πŸƒβ€β™€οΈjuggle, juggle ....

Have a great week everyone and happy, healthy vibes to those on the IC x

Yikes! It sounds like that trail race had it’s challenges, to say the least! I’m just truckin’ along running some short little runs whenever I can. I still have the little voice in my head reminding me that I have a hm next summer so don’t get too comfortable just being all willy-nilly with my running. My trail running partner who has been on the IC for the last year who convinced me to run this race with her is still battling some issues so we’ve come to terms with it being a sightseeing run-walk HM most likely. But baby steps first - she has to get healed up enough to run again.

I did some birthday shopping last week and posted about my new running kit on the bridge forum- some new Mizuno wave runner shoes (so light!) and a quilted skirt to keep my bum and tummy warm while running in the winter. The first test run in the skirt was good and I’ll be trying out the shoes on the treadmill this week.

DeckerUltramarathon in reply to SaskAlliecat

It's nice you are able to just go out on the short runs and enjoy them. Hope your run partner is able to join you soon. I'm looking forward to getting back to some of that too. I saw that skirt post post and good for you! New gear is always fun. :)

Agreed! I read the post and wandered if I could justify a quilted skirt

Er no. Darn 😁

I think you earned a well-deserved rest after your hard race Enjoy it πŸ‘πŸ˜ƒ

I have a marathon this Sunday. I’ve decided I’m making it the last race of the year. I normally run my home town’s 10km in early December. Since being diagnosed with psoriasis, completely out of the blue - and being covered in it since April - I want to see if a rest will help it to clear up; in the hope that not putting my body under such stress will help. No idea if it will work πŸ€·β€β™€οΈ

Got three runs this week before the big one on Sunday. There’s a 9 km one the night before. That’s not gonna happen πŸ˜ƒ. I’ll swop it to mid week, around dog walking duties πŸ•

Have a great week everyone πŸ‘πŸ˜ƒHopefully it will be drier. Watch out for slippery conditions in the mornings

Me too, I’m sick of it. The jollop stinks! 😁. It smells like damp washing πŸ™„.

Thanks Decker πŸ˜ƒ. Looking forward to my race. I’m going for tea at my niece’s the evening before . She lives en route. Then off to hotel and an early night

in reply to misswobble

poor you. hope it clears up soon. Agreed about the smell of the hydrocortisone stuff - I have it for skin eruptions, especially reaction to chlorine when summer swimming.

I thought it was petrol fumes I was smelling after flooding diverted all the town’s traffic past my house for 2 days. I wasn’t far wrong. The stuff is petroleum based My husband agreed with me about the damp washing smell. Yuk πŸ˜–

the last one I had wasn't the vaseline type one, but i think it had an E45 base - still mineral oil though

Pics might be an issue as my niece won’t be there. My husband is hopeless. He says he’s got shot a video but it never actually works, and then photos are rationed. I get one if I’m lucky. My nephew will be there so I’ll ask him πŸ™‚

Never mind Decker - we all learn from these experiences!! Well done in getting to the end and coping with the issues πŸ‘πŸ»πŸ‘πŸ». Following on from a 7 mile race the Sunday before, I set myself a target for my first 10k road race yesterday and managed to beat that by 1 minute. Considering that 3k was through potholes filled with muddy water I was very pleased with the result, and was 2.5 mins faster than my unofficial 10k time. That was my last race until Feb, but I have 3 Half marathons, a 10k and a 20miler signed up for next spring. For now, I’m going to focus on cracking my parkrun pb πŸ‘

Decker profile image
DeckerUltramarathon in reply to Macmac

Thanks Macmac - live and learn eh? :) Well done on your 10k! Sounds more like an obstacle course! You'll probably get a whole host of PRs after you crushed that marathon. And you are well set for races next year too!

I put my own diy ice studs around the edge of my shoes about 6-7 mm in from the edge and 10 on each. None on pad or ball of foot area. They work fine even on sheet ice. No need to have any in centre/extreme weight bearing areas imho. Only doing a couple of weekly dreadmill lunchtime runs at the mo just to keep things ticking over

Decker profile image
DeckerUltramarathon in reply to Lordi

I've moved my show studs to a thicker part of the sole now, further away from the toe section. :)

I'm having a day or two off, out trail running tomorrow eve with the off rd gang should be nice and muddy!

We have a charity 11 mile run (rather than race) from the centre of island to ventnor on the coast on Sunday.

Got 2 more local events booked in ,the chilly hilly and abominable snowman in December 😊

Hi Decker and everyone. πŸ‘‹πŸ‘‹

Firstly, kudos on that race! It sounded like a real tester, and the fact you completed it was testament to your strength as a runner. Amazing. πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ‘

I’m back running. I had a couple of weeks of doing very little after Mum passed away. I simply didn’t have the oomph, not surprisingly, but now the funeral is behind me I feel much better. πŸ˜€

So I did PR on Saturday and received a thoroughly unexpected Volunteer of the Year award - as well as my dog, who received an award for excellence in Bark Code Scanning assistance! That really perked me up! πŸ’•

Yesterday I did a lovely sploshy muddy 10k on the tow path. A beautiful morning, sunny and cool. Flossie the dog was able to run off the lead and she joined me in getting filthy. A lovely run. πŸƒβ€β™€οΈπŸ•

Tomorrow I’m going to bite the bullet and do a JogRunSprint session, although I’ve fiddled with the settings. I dislike fast running intensely, but I can when I have to - so I need to make interval sessions enjoyable or I simply won’t do them. Let’s see how tomorrow goes.

Anyway, it’s nice to feel human again. Obviously I miss Mum like crazy, but I take her with me in my thoughts when I run. ❀️

Have a great week everyone. πŸ‘πŸƒβ€β™€οΈπŸƒβ€β™‚οΈπŸ˜€

I think you’re right. The pressure is less once the funeral is over. That is a very fraught time 😟

It’s a good idea to go out with the dog and just be. There’s great solace in it πŸ™‚

I hate fast running too and resent having to β€œgo for it” 😁. Nothing wrong with it in short bursts though and they say it’s good for us πŸ™‚

You will think of your mum lots πŸ˜ƒ

cheekychipmunks profile image

That’s what I was hoping MW, short bursts of fast interspersed with slow I can deal with. (Mostly slow though!) Yes, Mum will be with me. ❀️

Yikes, Decker - well done!!!!

No more races for me this year, I'm just quietly getting on with my 2020 marathon plan. I've actually booked three events for next year already, which is a complete turnaround from my talk last year about only booking at the last minute πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚ May as well sign up for the other one, I suppose...

Have a great week, Decker and all xxx

Decker profile image
DeckerUltramarathon in reply to roseabi

Wow - you will be busy Abi! Yes you may as well go for the other one! I only have the one Chili Half race booked in the new year, and possibly Chicago if it goes through. 50/50 odds on that lottery apparently.

misswobble profile image

Is that one marathon or three? πŸ˜ƒ.

I've signed up for nowt yet. Being skint doesn’t help make advance plans, or maybe it does in the light of my current health issue πŸ™‚. I’m quite looking forward to not having to run in the snow. Getting tsunamied by lorries on dark, wet nights is no joke either πŸ™‚

roseabi profile image

After Sunday I am without a plan πŸ€·β€β™€οΈ Gosh 😁

I’m off for a run now. A very short tempo one. Off to have my hair cut later so I can see where I’m going on Sunday πŸ˜€

I could do with going back to bed for a bit. I was rudely awakened pre-dawn by my neighbour banging on the door. She’d managed to lock herself out and was freezing. She was wearing a tee shirt 😫😳πŸ₯Ά

2.5 k. Hardly worth turning out 😁. I’m going, I’m going πŸƒβ€β™€οΈ

DIY spikes??? Ouch! Hope your feet are ok!

I'm easing back into running after an 11 day break with a wretched chest infection - had it for weeks without knowing. So baby steps/short runs and still getting out of breath. Total pain as I begin the Marcothon run every day in December challenge soon. I hate winter running anyway: cold, slippery and wrapped up in enough gear to kit out a small army.

I have the London Winter Run 10k in February and have decided to train for it, starting in December. I've never trained for a 10k race before (I usually just run them) but am hoping to pick up pace with the training plan.

I have Oxford Town & Gown 10k in May and Blenheim half in September - but they are distant dots on the horizon.

I’m using the cooler weather to up my distance because I find the summer months really hard. So assuming we don’t get iced in I’m going to get to marathon distance over the winter. So far so good. Managed 8.25 miles this week but had to skip today’s run as I strained my back doing the ironing yesterday! πŸ₯΄
